Chasing with some friends, it was very chaotic. Especially when we found out about the double header maybe 3 hours prior to their set departure time.Things that went wrong, hmm. The sheer amount of people chasing the train, my phone being on a really low percentage, the single header on the way to Niles, and the lack of lighting on the way back to Sunol.Thing that went right! The Best Big Boy start up ever? The start of UP 4014s Coast to Coast tour eastbound! foodmuncher 2026-09-01 | The start of UP Big Boy 4014's Coast to Coast tour!The most fun I've ever had railfanning. I've always wanted to railfan in the rain, and to do so with such an amazing engine? Pure bliss. Although theres always the worry of getting the camera wet, thats what umbrellas are for, right? Weirdly UP didn't post the departure time, but I was in luck when we wanted to go up to Roseville at around 8 AM and 4014 ended up departing shortly after! The start of the chase was honestly, quite "unscenic" albeit with the exception of it being so cold that you could see the insane amount of steam Big Boy was producing. After a really long delay of Big Boy waiting for a train to get a crew, it was on its way to the Feather River Canyon.The FRC was truly the highlight of the chase. So much rain. Beautiful nature. Although there were even more delays, it was worth it. Seeing the Big Boy booting up from a cold start on a wet, slippery rails, this was what 4014 was made for. The amount of steam she created was insane. Practically covered the entire train with steam. We were suffering in the rain & hail but capturing the most beautiful start up ever. Caltrain F40PH Power move to Oakland at Santa Clara foodmuncher 2026-03-19 | On 3/14/26, Caltrain sent their F40PH-2Cs up to Oakland for Amtrak to lease on their Capitol Corridor service. I was lucky enough to catch and get a decent shot of them on the move at Santa Clara and even get a P2 hornshow! It offers a rare opportunity to experience a train ride through Niles Canyon at night. With one departure from Niles at 4:30 and a second departure from Sunol at 7:30.
