The Commodore 64 1541 Disk Drive Sings!
updated
Nostalgic Freedom is a short film that 3 of my friends and I made back in 2019 while attending SDSU (San Diego State University). This was the 2nd film of my 1st production class. The objective was to make a short film that had no on screen dialogue and no subtitles. No characters were allowed to speak on camera but voiceovers were allowed. The restrictions were there to help us get creative and make something we may not normally make.
I came up with the concept for this film just minutes before a pitch was due. My team and I were going to make a completely different film that none of us were particularly confident in. But while trying to think of a better idea, I was inspired by a unique location that I had access to. I pitched to our professor the concept of a man who must sleep on his elementary school's soccer field in order to overcome anxiety and a the driver of an imaginary car that wants to run him over. The man tells this story to his therapist through the use of voiceovers. It worked and the idea was green lit. I based the story around what we could reasonably do at this location without any special effects.
While this wasn't the most cinematic or professional film that our class made that semester, it was well received. People particularly liked it for its strange story and the stunt driving. If the story doesn't make sense to you, don't worry. It explores the concepts of nostalgia and hallucinations with limited dialogue. I will admit that someone going to their old soccer field just to sleep on it, is kind of strange. Out of all the films I was involved in during my time at SDSU, this is the one that I had the most roles in. (Writing, directing, producing, editing, camera operating, voice acting and stunt driving). The pandemic caused a major shift in our productivity as film students, so I am eternally grateful that we got to make this film before the pandemic started.
PS: The stunt driving footage was not sped up or slowed down at all. The shot where I came close to hitting Daniel was, at first, deemed too dangerous to use in the film. After I stopped the car, Daniel and I burst out laughing because of how close I was to hitting him. But we had to re-do that shot again anyways because the camera did not record any audio. So we did a 2nd take with the same setup. This time, Daniel ran faster, so I could not get as close to him. But the camera did record the audio, so I used it to dub over the 1st take. The 1st take is what you see in the final film. So not all of the audio in this film is completely real, but the footage is!

Throughout most of the 1990's, vinyl was the preferred format for eurobeat DJs. Every major eurobeat label had released their music on vinyl. Over the years, there were literally over 1,000 mixes of songs that are still only available to listen to on vinyl, such as acapellas, instrumentals and dub mixes, particularly from Time Records. This mix taps into those vinyl exclusive mixes and goes beyond into the 2020s. Tracks 1, 6, 9, 10, 11 and 14 were all ripped from records from my collection.
For track 7, "Baby Queen Seventeen", I ripped a MiniDisc that was recorded in 1998. The disc included a remix of "Baby Queen Seventeen" by Cool3. Cool3 was a team of 3 eurobeat DJs and the remix was never released on any official CDs or records. It was played live by Cool3 back in 1998 and that was it. (More info on my MinDiscs is to come). I am still trying to figure out who was apart of the Cool3 team, so if anyone knows, please let me know! I would love to learn more.

So here is the video, as is, unchanged. There are plenty of things I would change editing wise, but this serves as an example of how far I've come with editing. Yes, we know it's "cringe worthy", but being that we are adults now, we look back on this video with laughter. It's crazy to think that even today, kids who were not even alive in 2011 are still playing Minecraft. We were able to fit the Minecraft .exe file on a 1.44 MB floppy disk, but didn't realize you needed Java to run it. Even then, it wouldn't be able to run on a computer that runs Windows 95 with an Intel Pentium 90 MHz CPU. We also got rid of our dial up internet years before making this video, but were surprised to still be able to hear the classic connecting sound and hear someone actually pick up the phone. Nonetheless, we sure had fun trying!

I apologize for some of the footage going in and out of focus. I had no idea my phone was doing that until after the recording. I would describe Racing Jam Chapter II as more of an update to the original Racing Jam, rather than a sequel because it re-uses a lot of the same assets. There are some improvements such as 3 new unlicensed cars, different physics, more camera views, "dummy" cars on each course and a hidden mirror mode. However, the game only has 3 circuit courses and 1 touge course, as opposed to the original which had 2 circuit course, 1 touge course and 4 gymkhana courses.
The night course in Chapter II is very similar to the night course in the original game, but Chapter II added 2 more corners to add to the craziness. I imagine they revised it for Chapter II because the original night course was the more beloved course in the original. The winding road touge course in Chapter II is identical to the one that is in the original game. However, you can only race in the uphill direction as opposed to both directions. So of the 4 courses that are in Chapter II, only 2 of them are completely new and the gymkhana courses (as well as the ability to tune your car) are completely absent. In my opinion, this is what makes the original Racing Jam a superior game. It's also (probably) the only arcade game in history to have gymkhana racing. The physics in Chapter II are also less realistic and choosing the manual transmission does not seem to give you an advantage. Once you release the clutch to take off, you don't have to touch it again. There is no penalty for using it incorrectly, like there is in the original Racing Jam. Also, Chapter II was only released on the Konami NWK-TR hardware, unlike the original which was released on the NWK-TR and Cobra. So despite being a newer game, Chapter II does not have the same graphical detail and sound capabilities as the original game. Despite the shortcomings, Chapter II is still an incredibly fun game. It just doesn't have the same "wow factor" that the original Racing Jam has. The suicide battery on my Chapter II board set has died so currently, I am unable to play the game until it gets fixed. Once it does get fixed, I will be able to play it on my Super Deluxe machine with all the controls working. I still plan on making direct capture, full playthroughs of both games with commentary.

In October 1997, Konami released Racing Jam, the most ambitious arcade racing game they had ever created. Initially, it was only available in a Super Deluxe cabinet, which featured an LCD projector that was displayed on a 70” curved screen. This was unheard of in the arcade world in 1997. The game ran on the incredibly powerful, expensive, unreliable and suicidal Konami Cobra hardware. In early 1998, Racing Jam became available in smaller deluxe cabinet which featured a 50” rear projection monitor and a traditional twin cabinet which each featured two 27” inch CRT monitors. However, these versions ran on the Konami NWK-TR hardware, which was based off of the Konami Hornet hardware. The NWK-TR was inferior to the Cobra in terms of graphics and audio. It is unknown as to why Konami made 2 pieces of hardware to run the same game. My guess is that the Cobra was too expensive to include in the deluxe and twin cabinets. The Super Deluxe machine already cost $24,500 USD and a pair of twin machines was cheaper than that.
The Cobra hardware came equipped with a hard drive to store 99% of the game data (a 1 GB Quantum Pioneer SG). The NWK-TR used ROM chips. I have not yet played the NWK-TR version of Racing Jam but the game appears to be basically identical. It just looks and sounds a bit worse than the Cobra version. This soundtrack is from the Cobra version. The soundtrack in the NWK-TR version is likely the same, but is more compressed. Funny enough, the soundtrack for Fighting Bujutsu (AKA Fighting Wu-Shu) is also included on the Racing Jam hard drive. Fighting Bujutsu was the only other Konami Cobra game that was made. Soon after the game was released, Konami released an update called Fighting Bujutsu The 2nd. This version is said to have had bug fixes and costume updates. The original version of Fighting Bujutsu has never been dumped and is considered “lost media” at this point. I will release the Fighting Bujutsu soundtrack sometime. The entire audio rip from the hard drive was over 90 minutes long.
About 75% of this audio is distorted garbage (AKA the graphics for the game) so those were not included in this upload. Voice clips and sound effects can be heard at 18:47 which I couldn’t convert properly. The pitch is heavily off and there’s a lot of noise because I couldn’t figure out the correct conversion settings. It’s one section of constant sound, I didn’t edit the clips together. That’s how they were arranged on the hard drive which is why they fly by so fast to the point where it's funny. Several of the voice clips you hear were not used in the actual game. Many of the voice clips that do appear in the game are missing in this upload. They are somewhere on the hard drive but I couldn’t find them. Like I said, I couldn’t figure out how to convert the audio for the voice clips and sound effects but maybe someone else can figure it out. For now, enjoy the complete soundtrack is here in highest quality that YouTube will allow.
No version of Racing Jam was ported to any home console and it is currently not playable through emulation. The only way to play this game is on an original machine, or by making a custom supergun setup. I was fortunate enough to acquire this Super Deluxe machine in 2019 and to my knowledge, it is the only machine known to me, but I hope I can be proven wrong. I plan on making multiple videos on Racing Jam to show the world what makes this game so amazing so be sure to subscribe and turn on bell notifications.
One reason why the Super Deluxe machine was so expensive was because it ran on the Konami Cobra hardware, a very powerful and complicated system that produced some of the best graphics the gaming world had ever seen. Sega was still ruling arcades in the late 90s and their Model 3 hardware seemed unbeatable in terms of graphical power. Konami had finally made a 3D arcade system that could rival Sega's hardware. But on top of being very expensive, the Cobra was power hungry, unreliable and suicidal thanks to a suicide battery that limited the game's life to about 10 years. Konami had made a racing game like no other and a machine that no other arcade manufacture was offering, yet Sega's Model 3 racer, Super GT, (AKA Scud Race), was much more successful.
If we are comparing Racing Jam to Sega Super GT, then Super GT has better graphics and a better presentation, but Racing Jam has more variety and replayablity. Super GT Plus had 8 cars and 5 circuit tracks, but Racing Jam had 19 customizable cars with 2 circuit tracks, 1 touge track and 4 gymkhana tracks (the only arcade racer to ever offer gymkhana racing). The circuit tracks and touge track could also be raced in a time trial mode and mirror mode. Racing Jam was the only driving game to have a handbrake, clutch and 5 speed H-gate shifter (plus reverse gear). The game is not a simulation racing game, but it did offer the most realistic controls.
In 1998, Racing Jam was released as a twin cabinet with 27" CRT monitors and as a deluxe cabinet with a 50" rear projection monitor. These versions were more affordable than the Super Deluxe machine, however they ran on the Konami NWK-TR hardware, which is inferior to the Konami Cobra in terms of graphics and audio. The Cobra version was only available in the Super Deluxe machine. So yes, there are 2 versions of the original Racing Jam that run on different hardware. As far as I know, they are the same game and the NWK-TR version isn't a that big of a downgrade. It runs at a resolution of 512 by 384 with 2.1 channels of sound, when the Cobra version runs at a resolution of 640 by 400 with 4.1 channels of sound. As for Racing Jam Chapter II, it only runs on the NWK-TR, because by the time that game came out in 1999, Konami had abandoned the Cobra. Chapter II is playable in a Super Deluxe cabinet with all the controls working.

I believe this is also the 1st visual eurobeat mix of its kind. I created a template in Photoshop that gives background information about each song, such as the label, cover art and who wrote and produced it. The world of eurobeat is complex but very unique, so the aim of this mix is to not only to be entertaining but informative as well.
4 programs were used to create this mix: Adobe Premiere to mix the audio, Adobe Photoshop to create the visuals, OBS Studio to record my editing timeline and Audacity to record my own vinyl rips. (Every vinyl mix that was used in this mix was ripped from my own records, except for the vinyl rips that appear in tracks 25 and 26). Most of the audio also comes from my own eurobeat CDs to ensure the best available audio was used.
I started working on this mix using the editing software I know best (Premiere), because I was inspired by official eurobeat mixes and wanted to combine the best transitions that have been created by eurobeat DJs over the years. However this concept turned out to be difficult because there are only so many paths you can go. If there's an epic transition from song A to song B, you then have to find a transition from song B, to song C, which may not exist. After playing around with official transitions for a while, I got the inspiration to make my own transitions. I chose to keep working in Premiere, which was a mistake because it is designed to create videos/movies, not music. So the amount of edits I could make was limited. It also made simple things like maintaining the BPM much harder than it needed to be. Using the "wrong software" is one of the reasons why this mix took so long to make. So for my next eurobeat mix, I will be using a proper audio editor.
This music means the absolute world to me and I hope my passion for it shows through this mix.

This game, as well as the original Racing Jam, are NOT working in MAME, so as a racing game and arcade enthusiast, it has always been important to me to get this game going and to share it on YouTube. There was never a home console port of either Racing Jam, so if you want to play these games, you'll have to find a machine or buy the PCB set and make your own setup like I did.

This version of the game is from a deluxe cabinet, which uses a clutch pedal and a 5 speed H-gate shifter with a reverse gear, so if you want to use manual transmission, the controls have to be wired up. A fail of this can be seen at 25:41 because I don't have those controls wired up. During the boot up process, you can see that this particular version of the game is the GN676 UAE version made for North and South America, which has NOT been dumped, so I definitely want to extract the data soon. GN676 is the code name for the original Racing Jam, which means that my PCB set was originally Racing Jam 1, but was converted to Chapter II by swapping 9 ROMs and keeping 2 of the original GN676 ROMs in place. Swapping the small network board is also appears to be necessary according to the conversion kit's manual. GN888 is the code name for Chapter II.
On top of being Chapter II, on top of being the more uncommon deluxe version and on top of being the American version, the notorious real-time clock (RTC) timekeeper RAM that kills these Konami boards, is still good. Either someone did a hell of a great job soldering on a new one, or the original one is still there and still working 20 years after the game's release, which is quite impressive. I was genuinely expecting it to be dead when I finally got this going, but apparently it's still alive. No matter what though, the amount of life left in a timekeeper RAM is unknown, so it could die any day now, I just hope to record a full playthrough of the game very soon and share it with the world. Since emulation currently isn't an option, and so few know about this game, I feel it's important to share the game as much as I can for the world to see. For now, it seems that my PCB set is working great, with the exception of a minor graphical issue. You'll see in various places during the gameplay and during the transition to the Racing Jam logo in the attract mode, that there is some flashing lighting. Not sure what the problem could be, but everything is marked as 'OK' on boot up.
I don't have all of the controls wired up yet, just the start button, 3rd gear button and 1 analog control of my choice. (Steering, gas, brake, handbrake or clutch). This is why all of the gameplay is either with full on acceleration with no control of the steering, or complete steering control and hardly any acceleration. Once I get every control input working, I'll make a full playthrough of the game as well as demonstrate the test mode. Strangely the analog control values increase more and more the longer the game is on, so with only the steering wired up, the car will gradually move on it's own. However the brake and handbrake values increase at the same rate, making you stuck in 1st gear. Manual transmission was largely avoided since I currently can't make the cars go anywhere.
Even though I technically haven't fully played the game yet, I can already tell that it's a gem. Konami has never been known for their racing games, but a 90s racer that had real Japanese sports cars with wicked courses and really fast gameplay? Sounds like a precursour to the Initial D Arcade Stage series! It has the AE86 and it has a togue course, the only thing that's missing is eurobeat, haha.

Ever wanted to hear Wain L's original 1994 version of Make Up Your Mind and Dave Rodgers' 2007 cover AT THE SAME TIME?! Being that it's one of my favorite eurobeat songs, I combined both versions to make a eurobeat remix! While I only used Adobe Premiere (it's what I know best, editing wise), the result is something I'm genuinely proud of. Only two adjustments were made to each version, channel balancing and slight boosts in the bass here and there. This is the best success I've ever had with matching songs to create something that sounds on point pretty much the whole way through.

The aim of this is to demonstrate arcade games running on their original hardware in the best possible quality. The vast majority of recorded arcade playthroughs/let's plays/speed runs are emulated and are done in MAME, which is not always accurate to the real deal. The ROM dumps of Sunset Riders in particular are in yellow, meaning there are known problems with the game, and the video emulation isn't 100% accurate. Unlike console or PC games, these PCBs won't be around forever and the collector's market for arcade gaming is much, much smaller. There's truly something special about playing an arcade game on a real machine in contrast to downloading a ROM, something that anyone can do and that only takes a minute.
This version of Sunset Riders is the 4 player version, ROM revision UAB. All 4 player versions have the characters confined to each player's controls. So if you don't have the 3rd or 4th player controls wired up, you can't select the 3rd or 4th players, Bob and Cormano. The 2 player versions have a character select screen and is preferable if you have a 2 player machine. It is possible to change the ROMs to turn a 4 player board into a 2 player board, but I have yet to do that.
While I was aiming for a 1CC, perfect playthrough of the game, it didn't happen this time, with a total death count of 9. I believe my record is 4 deaths. It's definitely in my top 10 favorite arcade games and is always a blast to play through. It's a true AAA title from Konami's glory days.

While my health and Galaxy S7 did not turn out so well in the end, the Initial D parody was made out of my love for the series, and to hopefully have other fans get a kick out of it. The only major things that were missing, was a AE86, and my own ability to actually drive a manual transmission, but that will have to be forgiven. In October 2017, I bought a 1990 Mazda Miata that is a stick, so I know now. I just hadn't driven a manual when making this video.
Special thanks to 101 Productions for the great camera work on the parody: youtube.com/user/DanielGonzProduction
Depending on who you ask, I pronounced some of the character and course names incorrectly, but that was due to grinding through 5 hour sessions of voice overs, and just wanting to move on.
What started as a clear-cut, approximately 20 minute episode, quickly turned into the longest Forgotten Games to date. It was just too shocking to ignore all of Mountain Vengeance's flaws. It has also been my most time consuming episode. I have faith that the 100+ hours that I have put into creating this, will pay off in one way or another. Several weeks worth of filming, scripting, properly recording Arcade Stages 1-3 on the real, NAOMI 2 hardware, and editing, oh man the editing.
The mild depression that I got after the passing of Steely Dan's Walter Becker didn't help. As such, the co-founder of my favorite band has been given a proper tribute in this video and will be forever remembered. If you watched the whole video, my sincere gratitude goes to you. Seriously, you are the reason why I put as much time as I do into making these videos.
After this, I would like to start making content that won't take months to finish. It's been so long since I've uploaded, that I didn't even know that end screens only work in the final 20 seconds of the video, hence why the "end screen" at 27:20 looks weird. Whether I start making full playthroughs of games that time has forgotten, commentaries, or just short skits, I haven't entirely decided. I do not have plans to cancel Forgotten Games soon, I just want to get other content gaming content out that fans can enjoy. Follow my Twitter for more details.

APRIL FOOLS! This was an experiment of effects in Premiere that I did in 2016 in my high school's MacLab. I don't have the original project file anymore, but I remember there was 10-15 visual effects thrown on the rotating cyclone. This was made in between the releases of the LEGO Stunt Rally and LEGOLAND episodes of Forgotten Games. Classmates and friends laughed, were disturbed and very, very confused. If you don't get it, don't worry, you're not supposed to.

Again, only Adobe Premiere Pro was used to create this, as it was the best application that I knew well at the time. It all came down to timing and minor pitch shifting. In case you're wondering, yes a new Forgotten Games is coming next.

In this remix, I matched the Cheetahmen theme to the remixed song used in this video below:
youtu.be/CZB0PcdhyU4?t=12m10s
That particular song in that video is a sped up and remixed version of the Italian eurodance group, Cappella's original song called U & Me. I added the Cheetahmen theme in this video, so now it's basically a remix of a remix to a eurodance song haha.
Just like FINAL TRIGGER ARKANOID MAN 2 (or FTAM2), I only used Adobe Premiere because that was the best application I knew well at the time. There were many, many attempts at trying to match retro game music to some modern techno-ish songs, (the best in my opinion being FTAM2) and this was one of the best matched ones. Everything came down to timing and if you listen closely, some things aren't as tight or spot on as they could have been had I used a real audio application. The closest and best timing I got with it is at 2:02.
Of course unlike FTAM2, there are no real visuals to go with the music. It wasn't worth it to me time-wise, but at least I can show you what it looked like all put together in editing. There will be at least one other video game techno-ish remix coming that I also did in 2014. I simply forgot all about these other remixes I put together, so I'm releasing a few now for those who are interested.

I can't believe this video is 28 minutes, I was projecting it to be about 20. I actually cut 3 games from the video because there wasn't much to say about them, and I didn't want it going over a half an hour. But maybe those cut games and some other dinosaur games may make it into a Dinosaur Games 2 episode? Hmm...
Thank you guys so much for watching this series! It's really great to know that there is a demand for it, and that people do find it entertaining. You are the reason why this series is still continuing. The next episode WILL NOT take like 11 months to come out, so keep your eyes open for the next one.
Games covered in this video:
Dinosaur Safari (1996)
Digital Dinosaur Action Pack Demo (2001)
Dino Defender (2001)
Disney's Dinosaur Iguanodon Pond-A-Thon (2000)
Nanosaur Extreme (2002)

Please keep in mind, the only application I used to put this together was Adobe Premiere, no real audio application, so some of the sound effects could probably sound a bit better if they were edited in something like FL Studio, but alas, I have yet to completely learn that.

Things have changed quite a bit since the last room tour since I have added a few hundred games and some new consoles and computers to the collection! I also went from having no monitors in my room to now 3! I apologize for the audio getting low at some points of the video. I think one of my fingers was covering the camera's mic.
