🌳 Ancient woods are areas of woodland that have persisted since 1600 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and 1750 in Scotland.
🦉 These woods have been around for so long they've developed special communities of plants and animals not found elsewhere. They're an irreplaceable habitat and in sore need of protection!
❓ While each UK nation maintains its own 'ancient woodland inventory, not all ancient woodlands have been mapped, and some of these woods are in a poor state.
🌲 Around half of what remains has been felled and replanted with non-native conifers.
⚠️ Development, pollution, tree diseases and climate change threaten their future.
💚 We work across the UK to protect and restore ancient woodlands back to good ecological health.
