In April 2017, I had the rare opportunity to be one of the only Americans to spend 4 days in North Korea’s capital city of Pyongyang. There's no question that it's the most isolated and interesting place on earth.In my early 20s, I spent 2 years living and teaching English in Seoul (South Korea) and I fell in love with Korean culture. To this day, I have a strong admiration for the entire Korean peninsula - its people, cuisine and lifestyle. When I heard about a North Korean refugee named Munho - who escaped only a few years ago and found asylum in Thailand, I immediately contacted him. All of the 10 North Korean defectors that I've met in my life are female, with similar stories - so I knew this one would be special. Munho and I chatted on What's App for more than a year before this story was actually filmed. Munho is an amazing guy and we had a BLAST wandering around Seoul together - comparing and contrasting life between North Korea and South Korea. What's fascianting is that they live a completely isolated life without the use of internet, TV or music -- something that is almost impossible to comprehend in today's society. Thanks to my friends Zach and Janki, I was able to get secret access into a Mennonite community in northern Wisconsin, where I was able to learn about their bizarre way of life. I made it all the way to the most remote state in India (Arunachal Pradesh) way up in the Northeastern part of the country. I came here with one goal: to meet the NOSE PLUG TRIBE and tell you their fascinating story. Back in the day, the humble ladies of the Apatani tribe would plug their noses with thick pieces of bamboo to avoid getting kidnapped (by men from neighboring tribes). Then in 1975, the Indian government banned nose plugging, and today, there are less than 500 women remaining. You will get to know several of them in this 20-minute documentary. I learned a lot about Northeast India while shooting this story, and I hope that you feel inspired by this incredible region. Meeting the Worlds Shortest Humans (4 Feet Tall) Drew Binsky 2023-08-02 | Follow my travels on VERO! bit.ly/VERO-DrewBinskyAfter 4 years, I went back to visit the PYGMIES - who are genetically the shortest group of people in the world. The last time I met the pygmies, I was alone in the Central African Republic, and this time, I went deep into the Democratic Republic of Congo (4,000 miles away) with Deanna and our local friend, Obed. The journey was not easy, as we battled flat tires, massive thunderstorms, and my camera nearly getting stolen from someone at a street market in Bukavu (the 3rd biggest city in the DR Congo). But the payoff in the end was pure magic - the pygmies are so welcoming and fun! They literally danced around the fire while beating the drums from the moment we met until we left (15 hours straight). This is one of those stories and experiences that (when it's all said and done), I will be remembered for.
