This was helpful for sports but horrible for raising kids and being a husband.I used to get angry right away when I was made to feel less than. Especially by other boys.I would always be well-received by girls.It would be an immediate trigger, and I would react with an equal level of aggression.Growing up, it meant fights; in sports, it meant competition; as a dad, it meant yelling; as a husband, it meant shutting down.From a young age, I decided to shut down my feelings and open only a few spots because I wanted to limit the hurt I would receive.Then everything changed when I started to feel again.Now, I can see another man and not feel like he's my competition, my opponent, my enemy, or someone I have to find a way to destroy.It changed to understanding that he is my brother with his own set of challenges, fears, and worries.
