An add on feature is a trip to the Vulture Mine at Vulture City, adjacent Wickenburg Arizona. The Vulture Mine was a gold mine and settlement in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States. The mine began in 1863 and became the most productive gold mine in Arizona history. From 1863 to 1942, the mine produced 340,000 ounces of gold and 260,000 ounces of silver. Historically, the mine attracted more than 5,000 people to the area, and is credited with founding the town of Wickenburg, Arizona. The town that served the mine was known as Vulture City.

The episode opens featuring the little known or told heroic story that unfolded when the legendary F4F and F6F fighter pilot LCDR Butch O'Hare was presumably killed in action during the Gilbert Islands offensive campaign by the US Navy. He was never found. The stage is set in the Pacific Theatre of fighting action in WW2, flying off the "Big E" USS Enterprise (CV-6). Butch flew his las two missions teamed with TBF Avenger pilot LCDR John Phillips, who with his crew calling radar positions of the enemy, led the formation of two F4F Hellcats to the night battle in the black overnight skies surrounding the island hopping US Navy task force. The TBF Avenger played a leading and key role in these night battles.
Our Grumman TBM Avenger was featured and marked commemorating duties on the Essex class aircraft carrier CV-17 USS Bunker Hill, which was commissioned in 1943 and fought most of the major engagements against the Japanese Imperial Navy, until near the end of the war in 1945 when it was struck by 2 kamikaze attacks within 30 seconds. These two hits killed many servicemen aboard the carrier and, for the most part, knocked her out of action for the remainder of the war. This story also reflects back briefly on LCDR Frank M. Whitacker from the previous Episode 2A, as he commanded the TBF flying squadron of the USS Bunker Hill.

The task will be to travel to the Northwest Territory's far northwestern corner, to a hamlet called Aklavik. Then after refueling, commence the journey to the actual site of the Mad Trapper's cabin on the Rat River. Based on a recently uncovered clue, Ron will attempt to follow his trail in order to locate a certain associated relic that is most likely buried under those arctic grounds.

A --- Ron is planning to fly up to Alaska summer 2020 in the 208 Cessna Caravan Amphib. This video describes 1 of 2 substantial side missions that may be included in that trip, or on a following trip in future years. This mission will be to explore strategic parts of Kiska Island where almost no one can access and where almost no one, if anyone, has been. Ron will attempt to land and document WW2 artifacts that had been left by the combined US and Canadian Naval invasion force, which landed on this beach and liberated the island in the spring of 1943.
Kiska Island is located in an extremely remote region at the end of Alaska's Aleutian island chain that splits the churning and dangerous Bering Sea to the north and the open Pacific Ocean to the south. The climate there is engulfed in a unique semi-permanent low-pressure system, which yields constant high winds, heavy rains and dangerous foggy weather conditions.
B --- The next episode will give an overview of the other planned mission, which would be to travel to the Northwest Territory's northern edge in an attempt to try to locate a certain unfound relic of the famed Mad Trapper the Rat River.

Who won? --- Not him.
Year: 1995.
Location: On the Alaskan Peninsula, 2 miles south in the tundra from the banks of the Kvichak River. Dropped off by boat several miles downriver to the west from Igiugig, which feeds from Iliama Lake.
After the incident, Ron was able to make it back to the river bank just as darkness fell, only to find that the boat which was supposed to wait for them had departed. They were marooned. With bloody hands and arms, while guarding their caribou capes and meat, the two men had to hope that the growing number of bears moving around them would not move in all the way. The ordeal was far from over.
We begin departing from Churchill to explore a place called Sloop Cove, a location where sailors of the 1700's etched their names into the rocks which enclosed the ancient harbor. Next it was north to to the cursed Marble Island, then refueling at Rankin Inlet. Finally, after departing Rankin Inlet, Ron fly's southwest into the Barren Lands to set down on a sand and gravel runway in an attempt to hike 6 miles to ultimately explore and document the remains of a historic fur trading post, long since abandoned.

We begin departing from Pickle Lake, Ontario northwest to Gillam, Manitoba, overnight, while not knowing that the port wing fuel cap was left unsecured; causing avgas to continuously siphon out into the airstream during the next morning's flight. On that trip leg, after circling over the famous HBC York Factory, which was built in 1684 - and then passing over multiple polar bears at low altitude, the airplane's engine suddenly quits, forcing Ron to make an emergency landing in conditions less than ideal. A polar bear approaches close, is then driven back, search and rescue helicopter arrives, then 4 days later the airplane is recovered. Finally onward to Churchill, with a short stay to see the many interesting sights there.

Searching the mosquito swarm infested inland tundras and ocean shorelines, next a kit fox stealing the GoPro camera down into it's hole, then back to Gjoa Haven for a landing at the airport for supplies, then flying out to the northwest and landing on the ocean, after that then another lake access search location, testing the shotgun, sneaking up on a herd of muskox, encountering other wildlife, followed by the dangerous close call lesson of the ocean's tidal mud-flats, a relaxing moment catching arctic char, departure to another search location and then finally, the finding of ancient human skeletal remains within a shallow near the surface tomb, with most of the bones and skull still preserved.

After Ron visited this site, he correctly theorized and published in November of 2011 that at least one of the ships was remanned - based in part on his observations of the live conditions here on the ground at Boat Place. This was was concluded partly based on the fact that the lifeboat's tantalizing final rest position was pointing back to the two mother ships when first found by the initial search party. Indeed, the two ships, HMS Erebus and Terror were to come to rest on the ocean floor very far apart. Ron's short thesis published here:

Departure takeoff from Waukegan Airport (KUGN) to the shores of Lake Michigan to see the skyline of the city of Chicago. However, halfway there, they encountered a line of rain squalls developing, which dictated a change in plans. 180 degree turn around and flight back to the northwest - to Lake Geneva in Wisconsin. Water landing on moderate winds and waves, then takeoff and landing at the adjacent airport, Grand Geneva (C02).
After a trolley ride to the main lodge, then lunch, it was back to the airport for take off home. As they approached the Waukegan area, the rain squalls had moved out. So they headed back to the shores of Lake Michigan and descended low above the water. Southbound tour of the city of Chicago's skyline, then back again to Waukegan Airport to conclude the itinerary.

After flying commercially and landing in Anchorage, the first stop was Kodiak Island for a week. Hooking up with local seaplane charter Andrew Airways, the boys went mountain flying, toured some lakes and explored the ruins of a very old abandoned whaling station.
Then next up was a week in the Katmai National Park to see large grizzly bears up close and catching snow crab for dinner. False charge by a mischeiveous adolescent bear. Lastly, a close call face-to-face encounter with large grizzly bear at the lodge beach; video taken at the concluding moments of the encounter as it moved away.

The wild and wonderful Turtle-Flambeau Flowage in northwestern Wisconsin, preserved by the state, is considered a mecca to both land and water recreation. Outstanding fishing and Camping opportunities abound. Plenty of islands to choose your own campsite. First come / first serve. We searched and circled with our DHC-2 Beaver to find our special campsite.
Walleye are the dominant species most often targeted, but smallmouth bass and elusive 50-inch trophy muskie are sought out as well.
The outstanding wilderness aesthetics are a major attraction. The Turtle-Flambeau Flowage is managed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to protect the plant and wildlife communities and preserve its scenic qualities. The flowage has the highest number of bald eagle, osprey and common loon breeding pairs of any Wisconsin lake. Shore birds and migratory waterfowl use the flowage as a breeding and staging area.
The Wisconsin DNR allows primitive camping for free on a first-come, first-served basis at designated sites, all only accessible by water.

This video is snippets in sequence of Ron walking around at the airshow, which includes a nice line up of jets and warbirds, the "Dragon's Fyre" jet truck and a walk around of an award winning North American Aviation T-28 Trojan. Includes flybys ranging from L39's to the amazing Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II, affectionately nicknamed “The Warthog".
All day families stood in line to tour inside the Cessna 208 Caravan Amphib, and we happily obliged. Lots of fun kids with big smiles, maybe some are now future pilots.

This week Ron takes his Cessna 208 Caravan Amphibian back to the northeast to Mackinac Island in Michigan to check out the attractions. Ken Franzese is the copilot, with his wife Julie in the back, along with Ruth.
Departure from Waukegan Airport VFR on a temperate sunny and hazy summer day, ATC flight-following across Lake Michigan with calm waters, then dramatic views at low altitude northbound following along the eastern shores of Lake Michigan.
The landing and island itinerary almost had to be canceled on the spot. Upon arrival in the airspace the group was notified by the Mackinac Airport staff that the runway was closed just hours before because of an airplane accident on the field. As Ron and Ken circled the island observing the runway, the NOTAM landing restriction was suddenly lifted and the 208 Caravan Amphib was able to land and resume the plan.
Tour the famous Grand Hotel, lunch on the patio at the "Jockey Club" and a lot of walking and browsing through downtown Mackinac.

Departure from Waukegan Airport VFR on a stunning cool summer morning, flight following across Lake Michigan with low to moderate swells, then finally crossing over back to land at the state park.
Water landing on Hamlin Lake within the park, taxi and beach tie-up. Dramatic nature scenes as the group hikes into the dunes. A picnic lunch, then off the water followed by a low pass for the boaters. Then finally back across Lake Michigan towards home ending with a runway landing at Waukegan Airport (KUGN).

A slow pass at Long Island at the LaPointe Lighthouse, then zigzagging north around many of the Apostle Islands at low altitude culminating with stunning views from the 208 Amphib of Devils Island and the famous sea caves that had been carved by the waves into fragile arched formations within the cliffs over hundreds, if not thousands of years.
Discovering that the boat launch to the south was washed out and there would be no hiking north to the site, the group decided to fly back south to land on the water at the beaches of Long Island for sandwiches and refreshments.
Then off from the water and up above the clouds to the south - back to Lakeland Airport (KARV) in Arbor Vitae, Minocqua, Wisconsin.

In looking a day ahead at a bad weather system moving in the next day, Ron decided to fly home from the Devil's Island weekend trip last night. Today (Sunday) would have been "IFR + Real Handful" with all the heavy thunderstorm activity from Wisconsin down to Illinois.

This is a short old video taken during one of my high-arctic expeditions to King William Island in Nunavut (Canada), in search of the doomed missing ships and crew from the famed Franklin Expedition of 1845.

Here I come upon a location where 12 of the Franklin sailors gave up and starved to death in and around their lifeboat, which they had dragged in vain up to 50 miles back and forth, hoping to find the Back Great Fish River in hopes to row to salvation in Yellowknife. They never made it.
And here they cannibalized each other until only one man was left, whose clothed skeleton was found as when he died; still sitting in the corner of the lifeboat, with shotgun frozen in each arm, still locked and loaded.

Starting with the departure from Lakeland Airport in Arbor Vitae (Minocqua) Wisconsin in Ron's Cessna 208 Caravan Amphibian, the flight heads northwest to Long Island Wisconsin. Water landing, anchor at the beach and exploration of the 1858 Lighthouse complex.
Then a water takeoff and back in the air to the north to investigate some of the other Islands in the Apostle group. Low flight viewing rocky cliff shorelines on Hermit Island, Oak Island and overflight of Madeline Island.
Then the southerly return flight home, landing back at Lakeland Airport.

Flight in the 208 Cessna Caravan Amphibian N188SF from Waukegan Airport (KUGN) to our lake in Mercer Wisconsin. Extensive preflight checklist procedures featured.
Then after unloading at the dock, we head out for lunch nearby at the famous LITTLE BOHEMIA Lodge & Restaurant, site of the famous John Dillinger Gang shootout with FBI Agents ("G-Men") which occurred in April of 1934. This was featured in, and filmed on site, for the movie "Public Enemies".
Next we takeoff and fly to Minocqua Wisconsin; Lakeland Airport (KARV), runway landing.
And finnaly a visit to our airplane hanger to see the WW2 museum relics and Randy's new acquisition: a royal blue 1977 Chevy Monte Carlo drag racer. The Chevy 557 big block engine roars to life with Randy behind the wheel.

Flight in the 208 Cessna Caravan from Waukegan Airport (KUGN) to our lake in Mercer Wisconsin, then takeoff and flight to Minocqua Wisconsin; Lakeland Airport (KARV), landing and visit to our airplane hanger to see the WW2 museum and Randy's new acquisition - a royal blue 1977 Chevy Monte Carlo drag racer. The 557 big block engine roars to life with Randy behind the wheel.

First to Bessie's Diner at Janesville Airport (KJVL) for some outstanding pancakes, then over to Lake Geneva for some water landings.
Next landing at Geneva National Airport (C02) and the the porter shuttled me into town. Checked out a few stores in downtown Lake Geneva, then back home to Waukegan Airport.

See some of the preflight checklist procedures for the 208 at our departure point at Waukegan Airport, located in the Chicagoland area. Then our host David Burden hops in with his gear for the flight up to Lakeland Airport (KARV) in Arbor Vitae, Wisconsin.
Boulder Junction is next, and after a 20 minute drive, we grab lunch and pick up some fishing gear there. After some early fishing, the rest of the boys finally roll in.
See the full crew catch some nice fish, as the smallmouth bass get bigger, and bigger --and even bigger, capped off by a 6 pounder caught by Andy Christensen.
Great dinners and poker filled the evenings. Great memories!

After I had landed in Minneapolis, I checked into the Radisson Blu, which connects to the Mall of America. Checked out the sights, which included an impressive indoor theme park. Great for kids! Also ESPN happened to be hosting the Dos Equis 3-on-3 B Ball tourney right there in the mall. The NCCA Final Four B Ball tournament is being hosted right now there in Minni.
Late lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe. Then the next day I headed over to Flemming Airport and flew home.
Had to file IFR (Instrument Flight Rules). Had weather to contend with, but nothing intense. It was light instrument work, smooth sailing... landed at Waukegan after sunset. Stunning city lights below. Check out the outside wing camera, a dramatic view.
It was a fun trip.

Located at Flemming Field (KSGS) in Inver Grove Heights, a township in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul area of Minnesota, Wipair, Inc. is the world leading premier float manufacturer for seaplanes.
Ben always had a strong interest in aviation long before he began working on Wipline floats. As a child, he built his own glider in the backyard of his parent’s home. Out of concern for his safety, his parents dismantled the aircraft before he could take it on its maiden voyage.
Ben eventually moved to California to work for Douglas Aircraft for a period of time. He was drafted into the Army Air Forces of the United States before Pearl Harbor and spent time working in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he developed a pre-oiling system to help the performance of the bombers. He was awarded several decorations by the military for this engineering contribution.
After WWII, Ben returned once again to his roots in Minnesota and continued his career in aviation, with empasis on innovation, and then founded the company in the 1959 by putting all of his ideas for improvement together and built a new revolutionary float design.
Ben’s son Bob began working at Wipline Inc. in 1970 after receiving his aeronautical engineering degree from U of M and spending a few years working for Honeywell.In 1974 Bob expanded our range of services by founding Wipaire, Inc performing maintenance as a certified Cessna service center at Fleming Field.
Wipline Inc and Wipaire Inc came together in 1979 when Bob purchased Wipline Inc from his father. The 80’s kicked off with the introduction of the Wipline 6000 Float for the de Havilland Beaver and they skyrocketed from there to many more makes and models. Wipaire celebrated 55 years of building Wipline floats in 2015.
Today Wipair dominates the world as the top float manufacturer in the world.

Last May of this year (2018), I was flying my vintage WW2 airplane home with a friend from Los Angeles - and at the worst possible place, the engine had a catastrophic failure, smoke, oil and fire from the front accrues the cockpit. We had to parachute out into the wilderness, and no one knew.

Richard Proenneke followed his ultimate ambition beginning in the 1950’s by setting out to explore and then settle into an area within the untouched wilderness of Alaska. This area is located within a general region which is now called “The Lake Clark National Park”.
Dick, as he was called, was dropped off by seaplane at an otherwise inaccessible place called Twin Lakes. He arrived in early spring - and during that summer and fall, he built from scratch his own log cabin, elevated food cache cabin and later a woodshed / workbench structure with other details.
And there he lived alone with just the animals for 40 years. He possessed only the most basic essentials - and a canoe.
He lived his life’s dream.
He in turn inspired thousands of people to go out and find their true wilderness and live the experience.
This video is my day trip to visit his museum, in the town adjacent to where Dick grew up. It is a fine tribute to him. The museum has a partial replica of the actual log cabin, along with many of Dick’s artifacts.
Definitely a trip worth taking.
Today the log cabin at Twin Lakes, along with all of the structures that go along with it, are all preserved and guarded by the Park Service staff of The Lake Clark National Park. It is somewhere you can still visit by seaplane, and see it as it actually was when Dick was there.
