We always wait until we have left a property before doing a video about it, so that’s why we haven’t shown this house any earlier. The house has two bedrooms, three bathrooms, a private roof terrace, and many other great features. If you’ve only considered apartments in your search for accommodation in Siem Reap, Cambodia, perhaps it’s time you looked at some houses as well! In a house, you will pay the government rate for electricity, and this is cheaper than the rate tenants are charged in apartments. Note that this is true for houses on their own land. Houses in compounds will generally still have electricity charged at 1000 riel (US $0.25) per kWh. In a house, you’ll also pay for water by usage, not a flat fee, and this is always cheaper. The apartment is listed at 120 USD per month, but is it a good deal? How does it compare with other similarly priced apartments? Watch this video to find out! Please see the pinned comment for some further notes about this property.There are some things I forgot to mention in this video. I didn’t ask to see inside the apartment because I’m not in the market to rent it and didn’t want to waste the owner’s time. The price includes wifi. The ad states that there is a fan, so a pedestal fan is probably included. Electricity is charged at 1000 Riel per kWh and water is 2500 Riel per cubic metre - these are the standard rates for apartments. I would assume that a one-month deposit is required although this isn’t stated.The building is aligned sideways on the block of land, so the front of the apartments faces east, and the wall with the kitchens and bathrooms faces west. This is good because you can isolate the bathroom by shutting the door and keeping some of that afternoon heat out of the main room. The apartments on the end closest to the street have an additional south-facing window. Please be kind and respectful if you contact the owner of these apartments. Siem Reap, Cambodia #forriel For Riel 2025-04-25 | I had heard that there was a walking trail connecting the Angkor Botanical Garden to Angkor Wat, but had never been able to find it - until now! Come with me and explore this lovely secret walking trail that takes you through some very scenic and atmospheric forest areas. It’s 6km in total if you return via the road as I did. Entry to the Angkor Botanical Garden is free, and parking is 2500 Riel (USD 0.25). You don’t need a temple pass to complete this walk. A tuk tuk ride from Siem Reap Post Office in the centre of town to the Botanical Garden would be 5600 Riel (USD 1.40). If you want to walk or cycle, it’s 2.7km. The opening hours of the Botanical Garden are 8am - 6pm, closed Tuesdays. Taking a city bus in Phnom Penh, Cambodia! Routes, fares, timetables! #forriel For Riel 2025-03-16 | This video is about a trip we took to Ta Khmau, the capital of Kandal Province, using Phnom Penh’s city bus network. As you can see, it’s cheap, clean, and efficient!The fare for the public buses is 1,500 Riel or $0.37 USD per trip regardless of distance. You can pay with cash (Riel only) or ABA transfer. Travel on the bus network is free for people over 70, children less than a metre in height, people with a disability, monks, teachers, students, and factory workers. Bus frequency depends on the route, but varies from every 10 minutes to every 30 minutes. As far as I can tell, there’s no timetable. As of 2025, I think there are 21 routes, however some of them seem to be just extensions to modifications to older routes. My advice is to use the route map to get a general idea of the routes available and where you might want to go, then switch to Google Maps on your phone. Phnom Penh’s bus network is now integrated with Google Maps, but this functionality works better on mobile than it does on desktop. The sangkat, Kok Chak, takes its name from these temples. There is no ticket inspection point at the ancient temple, so you don’t need a ticket to visit. Each week for 173 weeks straight, we have given you a moto ride somewhere in Cambodia alongside updates about what’s happening around the country. That’s nearly 3.5 years of weekly News Moto videos! It’s been a fun way to keep everyone up to date with events in the Kingdom, but it hasn’t always been easy for us to maintain putting this video out every week.But don’t worry, we’re not stopping the news moto, we’re just decreasing the frequency to monthly instead of weekly, on the first Wednesday of every month. We hope that by doing this, we can focus more on longer form videos like the ones about our recent trips to Battambang and Sihanoukville. We also have a new cost of living video in the works.We started the news moto in the dark days of covid when things were changing really quickly in terms of who was allowed to travel, and where they were able to go. There were constant changes to lockdowns, border and entry procedures, vaccine requirements, quarantine rules and so much more. The news moto was our way of keeping you up to date with these changes as they occurred. Over time and as covid became part of history, the news moto evolved into a more general weekly news update with a focus on news items that might be of interest to expats while steering clear of news that’s political or violent in nature.Anyway, at 7 am Sunday 18 August (Cambodian time, GMT +7) we will have a live stream to talk a bit more about this and discuss our plans for the future. First impressions of SIHANOUKVILLE, Cambodia! Shocking? Dangerous? #forriel For Riel 2024-08-09 | Jeremy and I recently visited Sihanoukville. Because it was our first visit, we didn’t have anything to compare it to. Of course we have read the news and have heard people talking about how much the place has changed, and we wanted to see it for ourselves. We stayed three days so that there would be time to have a good look around, and we thought you might be interested in what we found.First and most obviously, the large number of unfinished buildings dominate the skyline, and our hotel was very close to a large number of these structures. Why are there hundreds of these? Well the developments were funded by Chinese investors who have since left and there are two main reasons for their departure: 1. The closure of online gambling, and 2. The massive downturn in Chinese tourism because of Covid.Despite the overwhelming nature of the unfinished development and Chinese influence, it was still possible to find pockets of Cambodia as we know it.
