Incidentally, this is my second-favorite battle theme in the series. One interesting feature is the repetition of the opening phrase (0:16) at the 0:26 mark, mirrored almost note-for-note in the counterpoint line, with the exception that the opening two notes constitute a fifth (F#-B) instead of a fourth (D#-Bb). The follow-up line at 0:31 "responds" with a more complete version of the phrase, bringing the piece back into the tonic key. Also masterfully handled is the transition over 0:36-0:43 to major, ushering in the portion from 0:44-0:56 - a bright and uplifting verse in striking contrast to the opening's somber tone.
The reuse of the introduction in 0:59-1:09 with the playful drifting counterpoint resembles (and vaguely foreshadows) a similar technique used in the following games, Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, in its Wild Pokémon Battle theme.

The track employs a very stirring, descending alternation of minor and major seventh chords, and is written in a kind of bossa nova rhythm.

I arranged this from memory, which is why it's a key lower than it should be. I could have fixed that but didn't want to.
Early on in the exposition Junichi Masuda remarks that it is his own personal composition, and that this is the first time it's been shown publicly (0:30). Hopefully this means he'll be doing a handful of the other battle pieces too.

I have to say I'm super happy with how 2:28+ came out.
There are still a number of neato stages I wasn't able to showcase here--either due to recording issues or streaming ones.
Until somebody puts up something a little less scattered, enjoy!
The site seems to have some issues so I couldn't fully download the recording, nor could I get uninterrupted footage from the on-demand feed. This is what I managed to obtain so far via a partial download.
I'd love to be able to provide some more though. We'll see how that goes.
Edit: I see some people at mariowiki have caught on to this, let me provide you guys with the full stream so you have less trouble compiling level information for the wiki page. :s

I plan to have more footage up soon, too.
