The beautiful and historic Halladie Building in San Francisco features one of the first glass curtain wall façades in America—a groundbreaking architectural milestone when it was constructed in 1918. The architecturally significant landmark is still a sought-after space for businesses in the downtown core. The San Francisco chapter (AIASF) of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) has called the sixth-floor home for more than 30 years and decided to relocate to the ground floor to raise visibility and public awareness of architecture and the built environment in San Francisco through their Center for Architecture + Design.
Their aim is to increase community engagement with the general public and education around architecture. The space required a massive renovation to design it for use as both office and meeting spaces as well as a gallery space and lecture hall for the public to learn more about architecture, design, and the built environment. While sustainability and inclusion were a focus for the design team, improving acoustics was a primary driver of the project, reflecting the growing understanding of its role in the wellbeing, productivity, and comfort for its occupants and visitors.

It is a voluntary standard for buildings where the primary goals are to achieve superior energy efficiency and occupant comfort. It is an enclosure first “passive” approach that encompasses all aspects of high energy performance, sustainability and resiliency that can be applied to all types of buildings, in all types of climates.
Why Passive House?
Energy Efficiency Energy efficiency is the primary goal for Passive House. Taking a building enclosure first approach, the high R-value requirements reduce the energy demand of buildings up to 90% in comparison to existing buildings and 70% in comparison to typical new constructions. The low energy demand of Passive House designs promote the use of passive solar heating and daylighting as well as smaller mechanical systems which further increases the energy efficiency of a building. Consequently, in comparison to typical buildings where heating and cooling energy is dominant, the energy consumption to power electricity and the total embodied energy of the construction materials used in Passive House buildings becomes more significant.
Occupant Comfort Passive House buildings are often described as quiet and comfortable. With most of our day spent indoors, occupant comfort is a critical consideration when designing for high performance. The high performance enclosure in combination with stringent demands for mitigating thermal bridging and air leakage increases interior surface temperatures while reducing the risk of cold draughts and potential for condensation that can lead to poor indoor air quality and occupant comfort. Furthermore, a highly insulated building enclosure helps to improve indoor acoustics creating a productive work environment and a healthy home.
Sustainable and Resilient The Passive House standard is often adopted when aspiring to achieve net zero energy buildings. The low energy demands make it easier to incorporate renewable energy sources. Additionally, in times of climate change and severe weather occurrences, high thermal autonomy and resiliency in buildings is critical. A high-performance building enclosure increases the thermal autonomy of a building where the building can passively maintain comfortable conditions without the use of active systems.

1. It’s made from rocks. 2. It’s fire resistant (rocks don’t burn!) 3. It’s vapor open so you can drive through the insulation. 4. Easy installation. 5. Can use spray paint on top of it after installations are installed, but before sheetrockers come. (Great for notes!) 6. Sound control qualities. 7. It’s hydrophobic 8. Particles that come off the insulation don’t stay airborne (versus insulation made of lighter materials).
Builder or Contractor? Have you heard about our R-Class program? rclass.rockwool.comCharlie West - Design meets performance in prominent residential towerROCKWOOL North America2022-01-10 | Charlie West is a prominent residential condominium located in the heart of downtown Kitchener. It reflects the vibrancy, style, culture and progressive evolution of Kitchener-Waterloo. Charlie West’s coveted location places residents right at gates of Victoria Park, directly on the new ION Light Rail transit route. It’s just a short walk from Google Canada’s new office and Kitchener’s Innovation District. It’s modern, glass design, reaching 26 stories with 245 suites, creates a prominent silhouette in Kitchener’s skyline and cements its standing as one of the city’s tallest buildings. Charlie West was jointly developed by Zehr Group and Momentum Developments (officially the Momentum Partnership).
From the outset, the developers knew that they wanted the hallmark of Charlie West to be quality, recognizing that purchasers were not just buying a residence or location, but a lifestyle. The top three floors of Charlie West feature the McGillivray collection of suites—featuring unique open floor plans, 10-ft. ceilings and a curated selection of upgrades that have been carefully chosen by celebrated real estate expert and TV personality, Scott McGillivray, to create the perfect balance between upscale condo living and long-term resale value. Top of mind was how occupants will experience their space, with comfort and luxury key features.

Intended primarily for summer use, it featured no insulation, no basement, thin exterior and interior walls, and windows and doors that were as old as the cottage itself.
Designer and media maven, Lynda Reeves of House & Home fame purchased The Lakehouse and began its meticulous retrofit and renovation process. The goal was to turn the seasonal getaway into a fully-insulated, efficient, four-season, winterized home, bringing it up to code and giving it a second lease on life—this time, with modern comforts in mind. The team started by addressing the building envelope. The objective was to achieve greater air tightness, insulate the walls to a minimum R24 (Ontario Building Code), and find a way to integrate a heating and cooling system to ensure more comfortable and stable indoor temperatures, no matter the season.
Seamlessly blending the beautiful, century-old features of The Lakehouse with modern upgrades, without disturbing or significantly altering any of the coveted, interior wood walls posed a significant challenge. One thing was certain, insulating in a traditional fashion from the interior would not be an option. The overall design and aesthetics also had to be top of mind, ensuring the insulation was fully compatible with the chosen cladding option, a western red cedar wood siding selected to create a timeless, yet more modern façade.
While insulating this historic lakefront cottage called for a custom approach, the result is exactly what one should expect of all modern buildings. Its efficient, safe, quiet, comfortable, and beautiful. Renewed and revitalized, this 100-year-old gem is sure to stand the test of time and conditions for even more generations to come.

In its manufactured state, stone wool delivers unique benefits as an insulation solution. In part due to its non-directional fiber orientation, stone wool also exhibits unique benefits which have come to be known as the 7 strengths of stone.
Fire Resistant for occupant safety: ROCKWOOL stone wool can withstand temperatures greater than 1,800°F (1,000°C) and does not contribute to the development and spread of fire or the release of toxic gases.
Sound Absorbent for acoustic comfort: The non-directional structure of ROCKWOOL stone wool insulation is denser than traditional insulation products which helps to absorb acoustic waves and can reduce the intensity and propagation of noise. Stone wool also effectively reduces airflow and sound transmission, while providing higher airflow resistivity for improved sound attenuation.
Water Repellent to keep you dry: ROCKWOOL stone wool is water repellent yet vapor permeable meaning that the long-term R-value is unaffected by moisture over time. This is due to the inherent drying potential of the product which is also resistant to rot, mold and mildew growth—contributing to a safer indoor environment.
Dimensional stability means maintaining performance: Stone wool retains its characteristics over time which means reducing maintenance over the life of the home or building. Even with changes in temperature and/or humidity over long periods of time, there are minimal changes in the size or performance of our solutions.

Here’s the first thing you need to know about building an office shed in the backyard: Insulation is the key. There are other features you may want to address as well, but creating a comfortable and usable space starts here. Insulation protects against the elements and creates thermal comfort, so that the space can be used for extended periods—whether it’s for work, school, hobbies or napping! It also creates sound dampening which provides the privacy many are seeking with these projects.
