Lady of Legend. Steam locomotive footplate ride. East Somerset Railway. WooWooMad 2024-04-06 | A run-round footplate ride on a NEW engine. Completed in 2019 to a design by George Jackson Churchward and constructed at Didcot Railway Centre in Didcot, Oxfordshire, England.Lady of Legend, No. 2999 is a Great Western Railway 2900 “Saint” Class 4-6-0 steam locomotive. It is based on the frames and boiler of 4900 “Hall” Class No. 4942 Maindy Hall,The last of class was 2920 Saint David was withdrawn from service in October 1953.The original locomotives were built in the years 1902 - 1913.Part of the Saint Class project is the “Atlantic option”. This engine, as completed, is to be run primarily in its 4-6-0 configuration. However, there is provision in the design for the locomotive to be converted and run as an Atlantic 4-4-2 as thirteen examples were originally built for assessment purposes. When converted to an Atlantic the number and name of this new locomotive will also change to 191 and expected names include Atlantic and Churchward.The number the locomotive now carries represents as a newly built member of the class. The last original constructed Saint in this class being No.2998, Ernest Cunard. A second railcar trailer is in the process of being finished at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway in the UK and this two railcar set will undoubtedly be a supreme accomplishment. The Green Train railway in the north of Sardinia, Il Trenino Verde Della Sardegna, needs some renovation, but work is in hand by an amazing group of dedicated and enthusiastic society members. The fantastic workshop from 1888 and station site is displayed and described in detail by our locomotive driver guide. There is a brief scene on the day of the public meeting at Tempio Pausania Station describing the plans for the renovation of the station building. This scene, I think, shows the extent of the preparation, ability and commitment of the members of the society to the renovation and re-opening of the line. Narrow Gauge Steam Railway located at Trago Mills Regional Shopping Centre, Newton Abbot UK is a 10 1⁄4 - inch gauge (260 mm) miniature Narrow Gauge Steam Railway opened in 1988. It is using equipment recovered from the Suffolk Wildlife Park Miniature Railway, which itself recovered it from Rudyard Lake Steam Railway.Since opening, the railway has extended twice, the most recent extension being in 2006 to Riverside station. The railway now provides transport for visitors between the main car park and the leisure park. Riverside station is adjacent to the main car park for Trago Mills Shopping Centre and has three tracks ending at a turntable. From here, trains cross a road by an automatic level crossing, and continuing, runs alongside and then across the river. The railway re-joins the original circuit, which loops around and crosses itself several times. At one point there are six parallel tracks, all laid at different levels. The second station “Trago Central” has two platforms and is situated in the Leisure Park area. After “Trago Central”, trains travel over an impressive twenty three-pier viaduct and then pass the workshop & engine shed. FUNICOLARE CITTÀ ALTA. Funicular Railway, Bergamo, Italy. WooWooMad 2023-07-03 | The Bergamo CITTÀ ALTA funicular railway was constructed in 1887 and designed by Alessandro Ferretti. Steam power was used initially with two coaches linked by cable and counter-balancing each other. This funicular railway is used to connect the centre of Bergamo with the Upper Town (Città Alta) at Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe. In this square shoes have been made since 1430 and the building that was the headquarters of the shoemakers’ guild is now the funicular railway station.1917 both vehicles and stations were modernised. Stigler carriages were installed between 1920 and 1921 and both stations of Bergamo Bassa and Bergamo Alta renovated. The upper station at this time was extensively modernised with a waiting room and a prestigious panoramic veranda giving spectacular views over the city. More repairs came in 1954 and two panoramic carriages in 1964. A further restoration came in 1987 with modern automation arriving in 2008.The height difference is 85 meters with 240 meters of distance travelled for the right track and 234 metres for the left track; the maximum gradient is 52%. There are two carriages with 50 seats each.

Funicolare Monte Brè. Funicular Railway, Lugano, Italy. WooWooMad 2023-06-26 | The Monte Brè funicular or Funicolare Cassarate to Monte Brè (FMB) is in the city of Lugano. This metre gauge funicular railway is in two stages and connects the lower station of Cassarate with a station at the summit of Monte Brè.The first section connects the stations of Cassarate in the Lugano suburb and Suvigliana. This section is 196 metres, 643 feet long. At Suvigliana passengers then cross the road to the lower station of the second funicular railway that is much longer and takes you to the summit of Monte Brè at 883 metres, 2,897 ft. At the summit, there are magnificent views of the city and Lake Lugano. This second section is 1,403 metres, 4,603 feet long, with stations at Albonago, Aldesago and Brè Villaggio. The three stops are for the villages of Suvigliana, Albonago and Aldesago, all found on the western side of Monte Brè.The city gave permission for the construction of the funicular railway in 1905. The lower section opened 10th June 1908, and the upper section in 17th February 1912.In 1959, the cars of the lower section were changed to new metal-bodied cars in a modern style. Each car has a capacity of 42. New cars were installed in the upper section in 1984 with a capacity of 68 and cleverly designed with an antique appearance.Artwork now adorns the carriages, celebrating 115 years of service – 1908 to 2023.

WooWooMad 2022-12-09 | St. Nicholas Abbey Heritage Railway, a NEW Narrow Gauge Steam Railway created in 2’ 6" (762 mm) on the Island of Barbados, in the West Indies. The first part of this video is a footplate ride followed by a talk by the driver, giving the history of the Barbados Steam Railways on the island. Next is the return trip, again on the footplate. The not to be missed final part is a guided tour of the newly created running shed, given by the manager of the railway. The Narrow Gauge Steam Locomotive for our footplate ride is a 0-4-4-0 Mallet that used to work in Java and has been restored by Statfold Engineering in the UK.This Narrow Gauge Railway project in Barbados is the most amazing and bold venture that certainly is a tribute to Narrow Gauge Railway heritage and all the people involved. Much care has been taken in creating a representative railway that existed in the West Indies in the mid twentieth century. National Mining Museum Scotland. Scottish Tourism. WooWooMad 2022-06-01 | The National Mining Museum Scotland was created in 1984, It is now a prime Scottish Tourism site to visit. The intention of the museum is to preserve the physical surface remains of Lady Victoria Colliery at Newtongrange, Midlothian, Scotland. This museum is there to explain the lives of the many miners and families that were the bedrock of the Lady Victoria Colliery. The Pit tour describes the working lives of the miners while the Mining History of the area is explained in the splendid and extensive social history museum detailing how everyday family life progressed.The colliery was sunk by the Lothian Coal Company in 1890 and commenced production in 1894. National Trust UK. Electric Canal Boat Dapdune Belle. Dapdune Wharf. Wey Navigation UK. WooWooMad 2022-04-08 | A quite trip on board the National Trust electric canal boat Dapdune Belle. Part 2 of 2. This video recorded on board the Dapdune Belle, shows the National Trust “Riverwatch” trip towards Weybridge turning at Stokemill. The river Wey was one of the first rivers in Britain to be made navigable being opened to canal boat traffic in 1653. This first 15-mile section of waterway linked Guildford to Weybridge on the River Thames thus giving access to markets for produce in London. In 1764 the opening of the Godalming Navigation gave access to an additional 4 miles upriver. The superb National Trust UK centre at Dapdune Wharf in Guildford gives the history and expresses the lives of the people that lived in this world of the “Navigations”. The electric canal boat Dapdune Belle was kindly donated to the National Trust by Panasonic batteries. WooWooMad 2021-11-16 | HMS Ocelot was the last submarine to be built in Chatham Dockyard for the Royal Navy launched in May 1962 from No. 7 Slip. Ocelot was paid off in August 1991 and returned to Historic Dockyard Chatham UK in 1992. HMS Ocelot. - Well ! ! , even Wikipedia can’t tell you anything about the service life of Ocelot. All the Cold War Operational History states is “During the 1960s, Ocelot took part in clandestine missions.” Ocelot was one of thirteen Oberon Class submarines built for the Royal Navy, out of a total of 27 built for five different nations between 1959 and 1964. The standard complement was 68 made up from six officers and sixty two sailors.Ocelot was laid down on 17 November 1960, and launched on 5 May 1962. The boat was commissioned into the Royal Navy on 31 January 1964.

MAIL RAIL 2ft (60 cm) narrow gauge railway. Royal Mail Underground Railway. WooWooMad 2021-08-03 | Mail Rail two foot narrow gauge underground railway. The Post Office Railway, known as Mail Rail since 1987, is a 2 ft (60 cm) narrow gauge railway in London. It operated driverless underground trains when working for the Royal Mail. The railway was closed on 31 May 2003. Special tourist trains with drivers were installed in late 2016 and the museum opened on 5 September 2017. They now run a circular route beneath the depot at Mount Pleasant with a journey time of around 15 minutes. From plans to build the line in 1911, construction started in February 1915. First section finally opened on 3rd December 1927, after delays due to shortages of man power and materials. The line became available for the Christmas parcel post in 1927 and letters were carried from February 1928. The railway had a track length of six and a half miles and eight stations. If you find yourself in London and wanting a railway experience, rather than just shopping, this is a wonderful and interesting visit for all the family.
THISTLEGORM shipwreck and the LMS STANIER 8F 2-8-0 steam locomotives. WooWooMad 2021-07-03 | THISTLEGORM was carrying LMS Stanier 8F steam locomotives when German bombers sank her on 6 October 1941 near Ras Muhammad in the Red Sea. Thistlegorm is now a well-known Scuba diving site.SS Thistlegorm was a British armed Merchant Navy ship built in 1940 by Joseph Thompson & Sons shipyard in Sunderland, England and was launched 9 April 1940. The remains of the two Stanier 8F steam locomotives can now be seen on the seafloor either side of the wreck. The two tenders for the locomotives are still in their original positions on deck. Two tank wagons can also be easily approached as they have only moved slightly from their original positions. The ship was owned and operated by the Albyn Line, part of the company’s “Thistle” ships — all named after Scotland’s national flower. Thistlegorm’s name is Gaelic for “Blue Thistle.” When the ship was called to war, a 4.7-inch anti-aircraft gun and a heavy calibre machine gun were fitted to the stern of the ship. A triple-expansion three-cylinder engine with 1,850 horsepower drove the 415-foot steamship.On board only the forth but final voyage of the Thistlegorm was a delivery of equipment to British forces in North Africa. Loaded at its homeport of Glasgow in May 1941, Thistlegorm departed on June 2 under the command of Captain William Ellis as part of a large convoy. Its route was around Africa and through the Suez Canal, a much safer trip than the direct route through the Mediterranean.While the Thistlegorm was waiting in safe anchorage in the Red Sea, German forces became aware of a large troop transport ship in the area, probably the Queen Mary, which was carrying 1,200 troops to Africa. The Luftwaffe sent aircraft to bomb the troop vessel the night of October 5, 1941.Two German twin-engine Heinkel He111 bombers searched through the night but were unable to find their target. When they reached their turnaround point, the planes split up hoping to find other targets for their bombs on their way back to Crete. One plane spotted Safe Anchorage F and targeted the largest ship, the Thistlegorm.The plane dropped two bombs that struck cargo hold four at approximately 1:30 am on October 6, 1941. The bombs hit mines stored on deck and ammunition within the ship, resulting in an enormous explosion strong enough to blast the two Stanier 8F locomotives chained to the deck into the sea and ripping the ship in half.Thistlegorm sank quickly and suffered nine casualties out of the 42 men aboard. Five of the nine men who died were Royal Navy personnel who were manning the guns on the stern, close to the impact site. The death toll would probably have been higher had it not been that many crewmembers had been sleeping on deck because of warm weather.The survivors were picked up by HMS Carlisle, a C-class light cruiser of the Royal Navy. For his actions, Thistlegorm’s Captain Ellis was later awarded an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire by King George VI. Crewmember Angus McLeay was awarded the George Medal and the Lloyds War Medal for Bravery at Sea after rescuing another crewmember from the burning ship.From when the ship sank off the west coast of the Sinai Peninsula in the Straits of Gubal locals knew of its location but its “discovery” is credited to the famous under water explorer Jacque-Yves Cousteau. He recorded his visit to the wreck with a film in 1955 although it wasn’t until the 1990’s that the site became popular as a diving destination.The Strait of Gubal is a body of water that connects the Gulf of Suez to the Red Sea. To the west is the Egyptian mainland and to the east is the Sinai Peninsula. Due to its geology, the average water depth of the Strait is only 80m, which is shallow compared to the majority of the Red Sea.The dive team departed the Old Town port in Sharm-el-Sheikh on the dive boat “Lido” from the “Elite Diving” dive centre. Two dives are shown and are edited together. The video shows descending to the wreck and along the port side to the stern. On decent to the wreck the first objects to be seen are the two tenders for the 8F locomotives still secured in their original position. One of the Stanier 8F locomotives can be seen near here. Also shown is penetration of the wreck to the Captain’s cabin and into holds 1,2 and 3. Hold number 4 was completely destroyed in the blast that destroyed the ship.Of particular interest are the ranks of Norton 16H and BSA M20 motorcycles.The wreck is broken into two pieces, with the stern over at 90 degrees, lying on its port side at 105 feet. The bow is in less deep water and sits upright at about 52 feet. The ship is absolutely packed tightly with vehicles, munitions, rifles, armoured vehicles, Bedford trucks, weapons, aircraft parts, motorbikes and other equipment. It just seemed right somehow seeing how fast this ride is! I was lucky, this video is a ride on the Japanese Bullet Train on a VERY rare day when the Shinkansen, the Japanese bullet train, had to actually make up lost time after the October 2017 “Super Typhoon Lan” rain of previous days. If you are a Railway Enthusiast, of any type, you must find the time one day to come to this beautiful and interesting country and ride one of these amazing trains.@WooWooMad
Kinetic Metal Sculpture. David Černý K metamorphosis. Prague Tourism Video. WooWooMad 2019-04-12 | Kinetic moving metal sculpture video. Artist David Černý. Franz Kafka enormous metamorphosis "K" is worthy of the stature of a world landmark monument statue. Virtually unknown outside Prague, it should be as famous as statues that adorn other great world cities. There are many other websites that will explain the meaning, construction of this rotating head kinetic sculpture, the life of the artist, David Černý and explain the subject of the installation, Franz Kafka, a major figure of 20th century literature. I hope it can be appreciated how this enormous kinetic sculpture impressed me and how I enjoy the experience.The giant metal head sculpture was installed in 2014 and towers over the Quadrio shopping centre in Prague. It weighs 45 tons and is made up of 42 stainless steel rotating panels. It measures an extraordinarily impressive 11 metres in height.The title of the giant kinetic sculpture is known as "K" or the “The Head of Franz Kafka”, and is also referred to as the “Statue of Kafka”.At the end of this Prague Tourism Video, I have included the quick contact digital image printed on the public sign in the square to allow you to visit the artist’s website.@WooWooMad

WooWooMad 2019-03-16 | René Lalique glass design was at the height of Art Nouveau and Art Deco artistic expression in the years before the Second World War. In 1932 René Lalique glass was commissioned in France to replace the church architecture by his then Cannes neighbour, Lady Florence Trent. She was the widow of the founder of Boots the Chemist. This work was to honour her late husband, Jesse, by replacing the interior of St Matthew’s Church, now commonly known as the Glass Church or the René Lalique Church. The Glass Church is situated near St Aubin, on the Island of Jersey within the Channel Islands that are between France and England. This is a spectacular example of Church Architectural History. This work is totally “Unique”. When you are on the Island, pick up the leaflet for directions – it is on the bus route from St. Helier - and make sure you see this amazing and extensive collection of vehicles, locomotives, machinery and memorabilia. This video is in three parts. Part 1 is the steam ride behind the Peckett 0-4-0 saddle tank. Try to make sure you visit on a Thursday, as currently it is the only day when the steam train runs. Part 2 is a view of the Museum that has an extensive collection of Cars, Commercial Vehicles, Military Vehicles, Steam Traction Engines, Vintage Bicycles and Toys, Historic Farm Machinery, Engineering Machinery, Commercial Machinery, Organs, Musical Instruments and Memorabilia. It includes The Isle of Man Steam Railway, the extensive vintage tram network, The Great Laxey Mines Railway, The Horse Drawn Trams in Douglas and the Groudle Glen Railway.The rebuilding of the Groudle Glen Narrow Gauge Railway has resulted in a magnificent tourist attraction that is a tribute to all the folk that obviously work so hard to make this a continuing success. Remember, when you take your trip, it is absolutely essential that you visit the excellent tea rooms at the end of the line as the scones are fabulous.If you are visiting the Isle of Man for a few days, I suggest for the duration of your holiday that you buy a “GO CARD”, in advance, from the Isle of Man Tourist Board as it is valid on everything that moves and you can use it as many times as you wish to travel, except taxis. The standard gauge rail system, the Zillertalbahn having a 760 mm (2 ft 6 in) narrow gauge and the metre gauge for the Achenseebahn steam powered rack railway which, of course, is another “ Must Visit ” steam railway if you are ever in the area.The video trip begins at Mayrhofen station and is steam hauled by Zillertalbahn No.4, former Yugoslavian States Railway JDŽ 83-076. WooWooMad 2016-05-21 | The Aberystwyth Cliff Railway was opened the 1st August 1896 and initially operated by a water balance system until electrification in 1921. It was the longest funicular railway in the UK but lost this title to the Cairngorm Mountain Railway in Scotland in 2001. The Aberystwyth Cliff Railway is now content with the title of longest cliff railway, 778 feet (237 metres), which is certainly a honourable title as seaside resorts and towns of the United Kingdom have many and varied examples of this type of railway.This design is the work of George Croydon Marks, raised to the peerage as Baron Marks of Woolwich, ( a man well worth looking up ! ), who designed several interesting projects of funicular construction during his distinguished engineering and political career.The construction of this project included a winding footpath to cross overhead on a series of bridges giving excellent views of the passage of the vehicles and of the surrounding scenery. To achieve this, the railway was placed in a deep cutting where 12,000 tons of rock were excavated - no mean achievement for this size of project at that time! The river Wey was one of the first rivers in Britain to be made navigable being opened to canal boat traffic in 1653. This first 15-mile section of waterway linked Guildford to Weybridge on the River Thames thus giving access to markets for produce in London. In 1764 the opening of the Godalming Navigation gave access to an additional 4 miles upriver. The superb National Trust UK centre at Dapdune Wharf in Guildford gives the history and expresses the lives of the people that lived in this world of the “Navigations”.This first short video, that can give only a brief history of the navigations, was recorded on board the Dapdune Belle, an Electric canal boat kindly donated to the National Trust by Panasonic batteries.Visitors can enter where the huge Wey barges were built and go aboard 'Reliance', one of the three surviving barges.WooWoomad has also produced another video youtu.be/944BoCyfREE that shows the other direction from Dapdune Wharf as part 2 of 2. (838mm). Although the ascensore castello d'albertis-montegalletto is called a Funicular railway the attraction is there for anyone that enjoys the experience of riding something a little bit different. Genoa in Italy has a handful of Funiculars that transport passengers to the top of the mountain. They are all different and they are all an interesting ride !The ascensore castello d'albertis-montegalletto underground railway runs directly into the heart of the mountain for 236 metres, transforms, and then goes vertical 69 metrers up to street level just outside the Castello d'Albertis. The engineering is very interesting and it must have been very brave of the design team to propose such a challenging design. Looking back through the cutting on the Very First Day of opening. 11.15 "Down", 23-3-2013. This is the coldest I have ever been making a video. I actually had ice forming on the glass of the lens, but of course, it was the first opportunity to make this record of travelling on the newly opened extension. A "First Day" record of the trip all the way through Kingscote to the south signal box. I have since produced a clearer (and warmer) version on this site. This extension really is the most amazing achievement and if you are any type of railway enthusiast you must make a visit to the Bluebell Railway to view the scale of it all for yourself.Parts one to five in this video series cover the departure from East Grinstead of the very first trains, views on board, the arrival at East Grinstead with scenes on the platform and the run round.
