In this video I am working with a large dog that has a history of pulling hard on the leash while walking. In this video, I demonstrate why it important to not let your dog pull through pressure on the leash.I also discuss how to train the dog to walk at your side by using circles and a moving backwards technique that I use.In the video, I am using a 6ft leash and a star mark collar. There are lots of various equipment options on the market. Personally, I prefer various limited slip collars to teach the dog to walk nice on the leash. Limited slip collars include martingales, star marks, and prong collars.The technique will also work with other types of equipment including front clip harnesses.

The brand of prong collar that I recommend is a herm sprenger. The two sizes that I use are either a 3.0 mm or a 2.25 mm. I prefer a 3.0 mm for large dogs with thick coats and a 2.25 mm for short coated or smaller dogs.The key to training with the prong collar is to teach the dog how to avoid the pressure of the collar. When the dog pushes into the pressure of the collar, you want to show the dog how to move off the pressure and that is when you release the tension with the leash. I will often use food rewards initially to reward the dog for coming off of pressure. Once the dog understands this concept, you can begin going on your normal walks. If you want to teach the dog to walk at your side, you will position the dog where you want them with slack in the leash. When they begin to forge out of position, you can give them a cue such as "Easy" or "ah, ah" before applying backwards pressure on the collar. I will usually take a step back myself to interrupt the dog's forward movement. I demonstrate this more clearly in other leash walking videos.Practice walking straight lines and left circles if your dog is on your left side. If your dog is on your right side, practice right circles.Pros & Cons:Pros: *Collar gives you better control over hard pulling strong dogs. *Dogs acclimate to the collar fairly quickly*Works well to stop lunging towards various distractions such as cars, other dogs, squirrels, etcCons:*Collars can sometimes pop off. (Your collar should be equipped with a back up safety option)*There is a learning curve for the owner in order to use the collar effectively. The main mistake owners make is not using the leash to release the pressure of the collar in a timely manner. The prong collar can be a very useful tool to add to your training toolbox. It is important to understand how to use the collar appropriately so you don't confuse your dog in communicating what you want from them.Want to Work With Me? Then you can progress to tossing out toys and teaching your dog to come to you while they are playing with the toy. Once your puppy will come to you inside the home, you are ready to move it outside. I like to use a long leash to ensure I can get the dog to come to me if they do not respond initially.

In the video, I am working with a 10 month old German Shepherd Dog. There are several ways to train your dog to drop the ball and this is just one method that I will often use. The process works by using two identical balls. You toss one ball for the dog. When the dog returns, they often will not drop the ball for you. To remedy this, you can show them another ball and tease them with it by moving it around. Once the dog drops the ball, you will toss the one you are holding. Eventually you will be able to fade the second ball out of the process.

These training tips can also be used with other breeds as well. Here are the following puppy training tipsMain Focus points are as follows:1) Play interactive games with your puppy such as tug of war and fetch. This will help build your bond with your puppy and will decrease the amount of play biting you experience2) Supervise and confine your puppy when you are not able to directly watch them. The use of a tether and a crate are my chosen supervision and confinement aids.3) Use your dog's kibble to work on building various skill sets with your puppy. Teach your dog to sit, stay, come, place, etc by having short training sessions with some of your dogs meals.

This is a simple exercise that works by calling the dog back and forth between you and another person. The goal is for the dog to instantly return to the person that calls them. This video showcases a 6 month old labradoodle. One important note that is important to take notice is to call the dog at the correct times. If you watch the video, you will notice that the dog begins anticipating the game and starts to run back and forth regardless who is calling her. When this happens, one person may call the dog back to them multiple times.

You can use these different methods at different times during your walk.1st Method: Relaxed Walk. This means the dog can be out in front, behind, or any other place but they are not allowed to pull you towards something. Anytime the dog hits the end of the leash, you guide the backwards. I teach this with leash pressure and the dog learns that they need to stay at my side. They don't have to be looking up at me, rather just be aware of me and my pacing.
