In the conversation with Meenakshi Vashisth, Curator and Project Lead of the Temples of India project, Dr Sohoni expresses his view on the concept of sacred geometry in temple design, the integration of sacred geography and natural elements in building these sacred spaces and technological interventions influencing the development over time. Drawing from his paper โMansions of the Gods and Visions of Paradiseโ, he discusses how architectural formations have been appropriated and naturalized into new contexts throughout history.
Moreover, Dr Sohoni sheds light on the role of ancient texts in guiding temple construction, the contributions of architects and artisans, and the impact of patronage from royal families, merchants and local communities on the embellishments of temples.
Dr Sohoni identifies the gaps in the domain around lesser-known regions and periods and underscores the importance of interdisciplinary approaches in enhancing our understanding of these historical structures. This session concludes with a discussion on how digital documentation and preservation techniques can address gaps in our knowledge and aid in the cataloguing and analysis of architecture.Indian Temple Antiquities: Theft and Illicit TradeJio Institute2024-07-22 | In this part, Dr Kirit Mankodi addresses the critical issue of antiquity theft and illicit art trafficking, sharing his experiences and insights into efforts to reclaim stolen cultural heritage. He discusses the major challenges and ethical concerns associated with the preservation and protection of India's artistic heritage. Highlights the complexities of dealing with illicit art trafficking and the impact of urbanization on built heritage. He shares his involvement in efforts to reclaim stolen antiquities, such as the establishment of the website www.plunderedpast.in.
Dr Mankodi provides insights into the challenges and successes encountered in repatriation efforts, including notable cases like the recovery of the Yakshi from Bharhut and amorous couples from Atru. The discussion of Dr Mankodi's interviews, with Dr Pushkar Sohoni, views emerging areas of research within Indian temple architecture and the importance of developing guidelines and initiatives by authorities and educational institutions to contribute to documentation, thus preservation of the cultural heritage.Myths and Symbolism in Indian Temple ArchitectureJio Institute2024-07-22 | In this segment of the interview, Dr Kirit Mankodi explores the interplay between myth, symbolism, and temple architecture in India, shedding light on how these elements intertwine to tell deeper cultural and historical narratives. While discussing his book To What God Shall We Render Homage, Dr Mankodi highlights how myths embedded in temple structures reflect deeper mythological, cultural and historical narratives. He provides examples of how these narratives are preserved and expressed through temple art.
His discussion, with Dr Pushkar Sohoni, covers the importance of combining archaeological research with insights from mythology and cultural studies. Dr Mankodi emphasizes how these interdisciplinary approaches contribute to the understanding of temple architecture in India.Indian Temple Art and ArchitectureJio Institute2024-07-22 | Dr Kirit Mankodi, a renowned archaeologist and art historian, delves into the intricate world of Indian temple art and architecture, sharing insights from his extensive academic and professional journey. He elaborates on how the temple architecture and iconographic styles reflect the cultural and historical contexts of their regions rather than just their dynastic affiliations.
Additionally, he discusses the role of interdisciplinary approaches in enhancing our understanding of temple architecture and the importance of preserving historical information amidst modern jirnoddhara (restoration) activities. He also touches on building in historic styles and the significance of material choices in contemporary architectural practices.Indian Temple Styles and Symbolism: A Conversation with Dr Savita KumariJio Institute2024-07-22 | In this insightful interview, Dr Savita Kumari delves into the philosophy behind the evolution and development of the sacred space in the Indian subcontinent. Dr Dalal begins with his own memories of growing up, reflecting on the many ways the city has evolved over the past decades. Delving deeper into the character of Mumbai and its diverse communities, he shares stories that reveal the syncretic cultural and religious practices of its people, as well as the gaps in the popular narratives of the city. Lastly, the conversation explores the tapestry of food traditions and the lack of representation of certain cuisines that are fast disappearing from public space. The interview ends with his views on Mumbaiโs cultural heritage that deserves preserving and protecting, and his thoughts on what is truly an invention of the cityโthe essence of Mumbai that has held true. The East Indian Sari or โLugraโ | Interview with Mogan Rodrigues | By Subuhi JiwaniJio Institute2024-07-12 | Dress, a significant aspect of the East Indian identity, is a subject of another exploration. Mogan Rodrigues, a freelance tour guide who has been chronicling East Indian oral histories, talks about the lugra or East Indian sari. A native of the East Indian enclave of Uttan, he saw that it was disappearing from womenโs wardrobes and decided to revive it with a few textile experts.
While the lugra is a version of the Maharashtrian navvari (nauvari) sari, it differs from it slightly โ and Rodrigues tells us how. In the video, two women help drape the lugra on Rodriguesโ wife Sharon and speak about how they learned to drape it. One of them, Mary DโSouza, speaks about why she still wears a lugra every day.History and Present of Mumbaiโs East Indians | Interview with Dr. Fleur DโSouza | By Subuhi JiwaniJio Institute2024-07-12 | In the 2010s, a rough survey of East Indians in Mumbai revealed that there were 2.5 lahks in the city, 80,000 in Vasai and 12,000 in Thane. Why, one might ask, would a Christian community living on Indiaโs west coast call itself East Indian?
The reasons are not known, says Mumbai-based historian Dr. Fleur DโSouza. The Bombay East Indian Association (BEIA) was formed in 1887 and thatโs when Dr. DโSouza adds, that the community gave itself the name East Indian. The Association sought to uplift Bombayโs indigenous Roman Catholics and distinguish them from those migrating to the city from places like Goa and Mangalore.
Dr. DโSouza also reminds us of a misconception related to the communityโs adoption of its name. It is often assumed that East Indian was chosen to find favour with the British East India Company. However, by 1887 when the BEIA was formed, the Company was defunct; the British Crown and Parliament had taken over control of India in 1858. East Indians, who considered themselves Bombayโs โoriginal inhabitantsโ, still hoped for preferential treatment from the British, Dr. DโSouza says.Koli Lives, Livelihoods and Songs | An Interview with Kailash Tandel | By Subuhi JiwaniJio Institute2024-07-12 | The question about how we should think of indigeneity still remains unresolved. What we have documented, though, are creative expressions of what it means to be a Koli in Mumbai today. Theyโre captured beautifully in songs sung by Kailash Tandel and his friends (see the video below), who live in Machhimar Nagar, a Koli settlement in Mumbaiโs Cuffe Parade. Some of these songs are re-scripted versions of popular Marathi songs; others can be considered Koli lokgeet or folk songs. The former use popular melodies but reflect on Koli lives today; the latter dwells on conversations between fishermen at sea, the cityโs pollution of coastal waters, a wedding between two fish species, and a Koli womanโs take on her fishing-related work.
In the same video, Tandel also talks about his PhD dissertation, which explores the impact of offshore state projects (such as the Mumbai High Field and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Memorial) on the livelihoods of Kolis in his own Machhimar Nagar. The Syncretic Religiosity of Mumbaiโs Kolis | An Interview with Dr. Sanjay Ranade | By Subuhi JiwaniJio Institute2024-07-12 | How do we understand indigeneity in the context of a city like Mumbai? Certain communities in the metropolis โ such as the Kolis and the East Indians, for instance โ consider themselves its original inhabitants and indigenous to the city. The implications of the term indigeneity, though, do call for a deeper investigation for it has sometimes been used to differentiate between insiders and outsiders, us and them.
Dr. Sanjay Ranade (in his video interview below) says that โthe question of indigeneity is not applicable in Indiaโฆ We are frontier people, we donโt have borders. The whole idea of the border comes from the Westphalian idea of a state.โ In his essay titled โReconstructing the Mumbai Koli Profileโ in the edited volume Mumbai: Socio-Cultural Perspectives: Contributions of Ethnic Groups and Communities, he writes: โThe Kolis were the oldest migrants to the islands of Bombay and possibly its earliest settlers. In a sense, therefore, the community could be called indigenous as well as migrant.โ
This idea of indigeneity is markedly different from the articulations of the Kolis themselves, a group of fishing communities in the city, who can often be heard reciting the following slogan at public gatherings: โMumbai konyachi? Kolianchi!โ (Whose Mumbai is it? It is the Mumbai of the Kolis!). As one of the oldest communities to have settled in the city โ which was a group of uninhabitable islands before it was reclaimed from the sea โ the Kolis have felt the pressures of urbanization quite intensely. Over time, their settlements have been encroached upon by the developing city and their livelihoods threatened by urbanization, offshore state projects, overfishing and climate change.Join Arpit Yadav for Jio Institutes 10-day summer programme | TECH TREK:AI&DS DiscoveryJio Institute2024-06-12 | From self-driving cars to medical diagnosis, unlock the power of Computer Vision.
