Budget
Consider a budget. It can be tempting to have the latest and greatest of everything, but unless you have unlimited funds, you’ll probably need to scale it back. Think about what you’ll be using the PC for and allocate the most money to the components that are your highest priority. If you will be gaming prioritize the GPU and CPU. If you will be streaming prioritize the CPU and RAM. If you will be editing 8k video prioritize the storage, etc. Secondly, do your research by reading as many reviews of components as you can. Lastly, consider future proofing, it may make upgrades simpler down the road.
Size
What type of casing will you want to house all your components in? Cases come in a variety of sizes to match your motherboard. When thinking about case size, a full tower is generally more than 20 inches high. It’s a great option if you are planning on custom water cooling, tons of storage, multiple graphics cards, multiple fans, etc. plus you’ve got plenty of room to get in there and build, so it can make assembly a bit easier in that respect. A mid-sized tower is most common and is around 18 inches high and 8 or so inches wide. Then there are small form factor PCs in Micro-ATX or even Mini-ITX sizes.
Things to Keep in mind with your case: clearance, aesthetics, airflow, ports
Here are a few things to keep in mind when comparing PC cases.
Clearance: will all the components you want physically fit in it?
Noise: Some cases are specifically made to dampen sound. If you are a streamer or planning to use your PC to record music or podcasts, this may be a great option for you.
Aesthetics: Clear side panels allow you to show off all of the fancy cooling or RGB components. Some cases will have fans already installed, a PSU shroud, or cable management tracks already in place so you will have a simpler time achieving a nice clean look.
Airflow: There are open systems which provide airflow but do leave your system open to dirt and dust and they do nothing to stop the noise of your machine running.
Ports: Make sure the case has every type of port you might need. Most cases come with two front panel USB ports, great for connecting a VR headset.
Motherboards
The motherboard will need to fit in your case you have chosen. If you are planning a complex build, you may want to decide on the motherboard first then choose a case afterwards. The motherboard connects all the most important components of your PC and allows communication between them. There’s a lot of features to consider in a motherboard, most important of which is the CPU support. Different CPUs fit different processor sockets. If you have already selected a specific processor, you’ll want to shop only for motherboards that support that processor. The most common size of motherboard is Standard ATX, and this board fits in a mid-tower or larger. If you are unsure whether a motherboard will fit in your case, you can either compare the physical dimension specs or use a tool like pcpartpicker.com. While not foolproof, it’s a reliable way to double check compatibility and sizing between components, and it also offers a side-by-side comparison of which retailers are selling at the best prices.
The chipset on your motherboard is the part that’s responsible for communication between your CPU, RAM, GPU and peripherals. It also has support for features like M.2 SSDs, USB 3.0 and higher, the latest PCIe, WiFi or Bluetooth support, etc. Once you’ve chosen your motherboard you are well on your way to your own custom rig. The motherboard manual will show you what components go where and then the real hype can begin.

Getting a new PC can feel overwhelming, regardless of whether you build or buy. The gaming scene has outspoken advocates of both schools of thought, since there are clear pros and cons to both. Ultimately, you need to make the right decision for you, which we hope to provide insight into with this episode. Building your own is certainly the more challenging option, especially if you’ve never done it before. It requires choosing components, assembly, troubleshooting any issues that arise, and is all round more time-consuming. However, the upsides are customization and access to a broader palette of components. The world is your oyster! Tools like PCpartpicker.com are useful for checking compatibility and sale prices before purchasing any components for a build.
Building a gaming PC
If done correctly, building your own PC can be very affordable. You know best what your needs are: what requires heavier investment, and which areas of the PC you can cut back on. You can shop around to find the best prices and sales on each component, or even opt for second-hand components if you want to bring your expenditure way down. You also save on labor costs by assembling your own machine. Another benefit of self-builds is a greater level of familiarity with the inside of your system, making troubleshooting, replacements, and upgrades much simpler. These are fantastic advantages as well as the definite pride from when your DIY build POSTs for the first time.
However, downsides to building your own PC, besides the amount of time it takes, include the definite possibility that something could go wrong now or in the future. In that case, you will need the patience to see through the troubleshooting and RMA process if a piece of hardware is found to be faulty. In the event of a hardware error, there won’t be one warranty to rule them all. You’ll need to deal with each component manufacturer and retailer individually.
Buying a gaming PC
If you choose to buy a gaming PC, on the other hand, the process is much simpler. You should still research to find the best option available to you from a price to performance standpoint. This will still take some time, but generally less time and stress for this route opposed to the others available. Perks include that the machine building is done for you! You already know that the components are compatible and tested. Should something go wrong, you have one warranty for the entire build, and one company to reach out to for repairs. This can be fantastic if your PC just stops working and can save a lot of headaches in the long run. From a cost perspective, buying a gaming PC usually costs more in that you are paying the labor for someone else to assemble, plan, and test it for you. That being said, there are some incredible deals on pre-built systems where it was better to go pre-built on sale instead of getting price-gouged on scarce components like GPUs. Fingers crossed those days are in the past (the chip scarcities, at least).
The downsides of buying pre-built, in addition to the potential cost, are that you are limited to what the manufacturer offers. This can mean being saddled with sub-optimal PSU or motherboard offerings, one-size-fits-all aesthetics, and usually pre-set budget, mid, and premium-tier configurations. The hybrid of both of these options, and usually the most expensive way to go by far, is to commission someone to do a custom build for you, giving you ultimate control over the aesthetics and configuration. There are individual and small system builder companies nowadays that specialize in custom builds for consumers. Pretty rad!

Advantages of Different PCs
While full sized desktops offer premium performance, they’re large and heavy. Laptops offer utility as workstations on the go, but can be held back by battery and thermal issues. Small form factor PCs, aka mini PCs, can offer the best of both worlds. They are small enough to free up substantial desk space, while being fairly upgradeable with high-end components. You can get or build a mini PC fully capable of running the latest games. Upgrading is part of the small form factor culture, so you can definitely make efficient use of the volume you have available. The other bonus to small form factor PCs is the increased portability.
SFF PCs
Some think less space means more thermal issues, especially when dealing with higher end components. However, some of the biggest brands in PC gaming offer pre-built small form factor gaming PCs that are cool, quiet, tiny, and mighty. Intel’s NUC line, with its own proprietary motherboard configuration to get as tiny as possible, or Zotac’s mini PC line with options specifically designed for creators, are both striking examples. Whether you’re going pre-built or seeking pre-configured kits with options for your own storage and memory, there are great options to be found.
SFF DIY PCs
For those DIYers watching, itching to build a small form factor PC, some considerations. Firstly: the term “small form factor” has no agreed-upon definition. A small form factor PC is generally half the size of a standard-sized ATX desktop tower. This means you have a range of possibilities of size for your enclosure. Keep in mind when choosing components for this type of build: the tinier you go, the more judicious you’ll need to be about component size, installation, cooling, and cable management.
Pay the greatest attention to the CPU and GPU. CPUs tend to be small anyway, and when it comes to GPUs and other components, be sure to check length, width, and height. Look for low-profile or half-length configurations if need be. Anticipate that you may be working with a smaller motherboard, too. If you go with a Mini-ITX or microATX-sized motherboard, get creative. For a board with only two RAM slots, choose higher capacity RAM modules. Once you’ve got components and a motherboard that will fit your size needs, you’ll need to think about cooling. Low-profile fan CPU coolers are the simplest choice in a tiny build and liquid GPU cooling can give you some added flexibility when it comes to both size and noise level. Each choice you make may affect your other component choices. For example, a low profile cooler may require you to also get low-profile RAM, etc.
On the topic of RAM, if you’re going very small form factor, consider SO-DIMM RAM. Some mini PC enthusiasts prefer to build using a modular power supply so you can choose exactly which cables you want and leave out those you don’t for a cleaner build. Custom length cables can be a godsend. You’ll want to keep in mind airflow, steering clear of fans, and for those using a see-through enclosure, a clean look will also be important.
Small form factor doesn’t have to mean compromise. While this form factor won’t be right for everyone, it’s cool to see what these mini PCs are capable of, especially as the tech advances. Creating or Changing User PIN
Unlocking your drive with the Admin PIN will delete the User PIN set up previously. To create or change the User PIN while unlocked in Admin mode, press the KEY button twice, then enter your new User Pin, which must be between 8-15 digits or characters, and not contain only repetitive or sequential numbers (e.g. the User PIN cannot be ‘1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1’ or ‘1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8’).
After entering the new User PIN, press the KEY button twice. The blinking blue LED will switch to a blinking green LED. Re-enter the User PIN and press the KEY button twice more, which will confirm and save the new User PIN. You can now use it to unlock and access your drive.
Resetting your Device
In the event you forget both the User and Admin PINs, you can reset the drive to create new ones. However, this will completely wipe all data stored on the drive, so should be a last resort. The process features several steps.
First, press and hold down the ‘7’ button. While doing so, press the KEY button. Release both at the same time, and the red and green LEDs will alternate on and off. Next, press the ‘9’ button three times, then press and hold the ‘7’ button with the KEY button again. The blinking LEDs will switch to solid, then the green LED will turn off and the red LED fade out.
Creating a New User PIN
The KP200 will trigger data and PIN information deletion after 10 consecutive incorrect login attempts, depending on how the drive is set up. If this or a drive reset occurs, you will need to create a new User PIN.
Press the KEY button once, then when the LEDs are solid red and blinking green, press the KEY button two more times and enter your new User PIN. Like your previous User PIN, it must be between 8-15 digits or characters, and not contain only repetitive or sequential numbers (e.g. the User PIN cannot be ‘1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1’ or ‘1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8’).
Once this has been entered, press the KEY button twice, re-enter your new User PIN, then press the KEY button twice more to confirm.
Enabling and Exiting Read-Only Mode
To enable Read-Only mode for your KP200, unlock the drive with your PIN then press the KEY button three times. When the solid green LED switches to blinking green and blue, press the ‘7’ button, then the ‘6’, then the KEY button. The green and blue blinking LEDs will change to a solid red, then a solid green, signifying the activation of Read-Only mode.
To exit Read-Only mode and return to Read/Write mode, follow the same steps. Unlock the drive with your PIN, press the KEY button three times, then once the solid green LED switches to blinking green and blue, you will press the ‘7’ button, but this time followed by the ‘9’, then KEY.

A User PIN can be a memorable word, name, phrase, or any other alphanumeric combination that’s easy for you to remember but hard for others to guess. To create your User PIN, first press the KEY button once. The red, green, and blue LEDs will flash once, then the red LED will turn solid while the green continues to blink. Press the KEY button two more times so that the blue LED starts to blink. The drive is now ready for your User PIN.
Choosing and entering a User PIN
A User PIN must be between 8-15 characters and not contain repetitive or consecutive numbers such as ‘3333’ or ‘1234’. To get a specific character, you must tap the corresponding key a number of times to cycle through to its position. For example, to get the letter ‘r’ you must tap the ‘7’ key (pqrs) three times. To get the letter ‘d’ you must press the ‘3’ key once.
After your User PIN is entered, press the KEY button twice. The blinking blue LED will now switch to blinking green. Re-enter your User PIN and press the KEY button two more times. This will confirm and save your User PIN. To signify this was successful, the blinking green LED will change to a solid red, then a solid green.
Unlocking your KP200
To unlock and use your KP200, you will press the KEY button once, then enter your User PIN and press the KEY button once more. The LEDs should change to a solid green and remain on for 30 seconds while you plug your drive into a compatible USB port. You can access your files securely from the device.
Creating an Admin PIN
An Admin PIN is recommended, as it enables Multi-PIN mode on your drive. With Multi-PIN, you can restore access to the drive should one of the PINs be forgotten. In addition, an Admin PIN allows you to reset the User PIN, and also utilize advanced drive features documented in the user guide. Creating an Admin PIN requires unlocking the KP200 with your User PIN. Next, press and hold down the ‘1’ button while pressing the KEY button twice. The solid green LED should switch to blinking red and blue.
The Admin PIN has the same requirements as the User PIN. Once it has been entered, press the KEY button twice. The blinking red and blue LEDs will change to a blinking green and you can re-enter your Admin PIN so that you can verify it. After re-entry, press the KEY button twice again to confirm and save. This will set up your Admin PIN. Please remember if you unlock your KP200 with the Admin PIN, your User PIN will be erased and you will need to set up a new User PIN.

What to Backup?
Limiting what it is you decide to backup will make it easier on yourself. After all, procrastinating on a two- or three-hour chore is easier than something that will only take a few minutes. What’s the first thing you think of when you want to backup your files? Personal documents, photos, videos: things that would be impossible to replace? Perhaps you thought of apps, programs, and system settings without which you can’t do your job? If you do want to backup absolutely everything on your computer, the best solution might be a one-off big backup followed by scheduled mini-backups.
Scheduling
Scheduling backups is great for ‘set and forget’ data protection that gives you the most updated versions of your files at arm’s reach. Depending on your workload, you may want to set up a daily, weekly, or even monthly backup. You can even automate them to an external drive using Windows Backup/File History or macOS Time Machine. Cloud Backup
External drives are one thing, but cloud storage should not be your only option when it comes to data backups, even if it is the easiest. Cloud companies are favored targets of cybercriminals and may change their user agreements from month to month, both of which jeopardize your data. Monthly subscriptions can prove to be more costly than purchasing your own storage. Use the 3-2-1 theory of backing up data. Retain 3 copies of your data total: 2 copies on different devices, and 1 in a secure location (e.g. in a safe, or offsite). It may sound paranoid, but it has served people well for decades. To meet this standard, you might want to keep a copy of your data on your local device, another on the cloud, and a last on an external drive you keep in your home.
External Backup
Finding the right external drive means considering durability and speed, as well as capacity. Air Cooling
Of the two, air cooling is more affordable. In this system, heat is transferred from the CPU to a heat sink, then a fan pushes warm air away from the CPU and other heat-sensitive components. Commonly found in consumer PCs, air cooling is cost-effective and entirely sufficient for most users. It’s easy to install too, requiring only some screws and plugging in a cable. Most CPUs come equipped with an air cooling solution so that you needn’t worry about purchasing additional components to support it. Air cooling is easy to maintain. Despite these advantages, air cooling is not perfect. Some air cooling systems can be space intensive, restricting access to other components in the PC case. This can make system upgrades harder. Air cooling relies on fans, which can get noisy depending on how hard they need to work to cool down your system. Quieter fans are available but cost extra. Lastly, air cooling cannot handle very intense workloads, and will struggle to keep such systems at a safe temperature. Systems that spend too long at high temperature can experience component failure, an expensive prospect.
Liquid Cooling
Most liquid cooling options come in either All-In-One systems (AIOs), or custom cooling loops. Both use a pump to push liquid coolant to and from a radiator through a water block attached to the CPU. Heat is transferred from the CPU to the cool liquid, which is pumped throughout the entire system and cooled via the aforementioned radiator. Most people use AIOs because it is a simple system of a single unit that is ready to install. Liquid cooling’s effectiveness outstrips air cooling, and can look very cool and futuristic, but is more expensive and harder to set up, especially when it comes to custom liquid cooling setups. Simply working with liquid coolant near expensive computer components can be highly nerve-wracking. It also requires more maintenance: for example cleaning channels and maintaining fluid levels.
New builders seeking a more affordable way of getting into liquid cooling are in luck, as AIO liquid coolers mitigate a lot of these downsides, being closer to high-end air cooling systems in terms of installation, maintenance, and cost.
Making a Decision
Your decision will likely come down to some combination of personal preference, budget, comfort level, and system needs. Remember there are air cooling systems that have characteristics associated with liquid cooling, like quieter operating and RGB accents, and liquid cooling systems that are cheaper and easier to install and manage, like air cooling systems. FURY CTRL v2.0 supports Kingston FURY™ DDR5 and DDR4 RGB memory product lines, as well as legacy HyperX® RGB memory.
Depending on the product you plug in, the memory module will properly reflect what’s installed in the system.
The LED light option is used to turn the RGB illumination off or on, as well as put into a 10% Low Power mode.
The Display OC Profiles option shows the memory profile specifications for the installed part.
The Save/Load Custom Effect is accessed by clicking the icon with three bars to save a new custom effect or load a previously saved custom effect.

KP200 incorporates XTS-AES 256-bit hardware-based encryption. It is also FIPS 140-3 Level 3 certified for military-grade security with enhancements that further elevate the bar for data protection. Its circuitry is covered by a layer of special epoxy that makes it virtually impossible to remove components without damaging them; this tough epoxy stops attacks against the semiconductor components. The drive is designed to be tamper evident to alert owners. It also incorporates brute force password attack protection, and BadUSB protection with digitally signed firmware. The alphanumeric keypad is coated with a layer of polymer that protects the keys and hides key usage through analysis of fingerprints on the keys.
KP200 utilizes a built-in rechargeable battery that can be used to unlock the drive first without using any software, and then plug it into any device that supports a USB type A mass storage device. This gives users the most flexibility across different platform types and operating systems.
With Multi-PIN option (Admin/User), the keypad can be used to set up an easy-to-remember but hard-to guess alphanumeric PIN for Admin or User. Admin can restore a User PIN and provide access to the drive should the User PIN be forgotten, or if the drive is locked after reaching the maximum of 10 User login attempts. With both Admin and User PINs enabled, KP200 will lock the User PIN after 10 failed login attempts; if the Admin PIN is entered incorrectly 10 times in a row, brute force attack protection will crypto-erase the drive, destroy the data forever, and reset it.
The drive also provides two levels of Read-Only (or Write-Protect) modes – a Global mode that can be set by Admin, and a session-only mode that can be set by User. Read-Only modes can protect the drive from malware on untrusted systems. In addition, Admin can load content and set Global Read-Only mode, so that User can access the data but not make any changes.
Most commonly overclocking is achieved through overclock profiles. XMP (Extreme Memory Profiles) are Intel specifications which allow you to overclock DDR3, DDR4, and DDR5 RAM to get the best performance possible out of a PC with a compatible Intel processor. This is a great option for gamers, creators, multi-taskers, or simply enthusiasts that enjoy pushing their system’s capabilities within a stable environment. XMP does not require knowledge of complex overclocking mechanics in order to take advantage of higher memory speeds and lower latencies. All that is required is memory with XMP profiles, an XMP compatible motherboard, and a CPU that will support memory overclocking. These are all easy to find, thanks to the widespread adoption of XMP in the industry.
Intel XMP
You can access XMP profiles within the BIOS on supported motherboards. They provide varying levels of overclocking depending on your system’s hardware.
An example: enter the BIOS via your PC or motherboard’s instruction manual. This requires a keyboard input during a specific part of the bootup process, though the exact input varies from system to system. It might be F10, F12, Del, or something else. You can also enter BIOS through Windows’ advanced Start menu recovery settings if the bootup window is too brief for you. Once in your BIOS, navigate to XMP settings. This menu will vary in location depending on your motherboard. It could be on your main settings screen or in an advanced settings screen pertaining to your RAM or overclocking.
To activate XMP, select your profile, save, and reboot. It’s that simple. Memory and motherboard manufacturers have already tested the speed, timings, and voltage to ensure that the XMP profiles will run in a stable way. You should still be sure to check your specific motherboard model’s qualified vendor list (QVL) or the Intel website to ensure you pick a supported part or kit for your PC. Generally profile 1 is the advertised speed for DDR3 and DDR4. Profile 2 may be a backup, less aggressive speed in case profile 1 turns out to be unstable. These settings have all been tested, but since hardware configurations can vary you should be aware. To turn off or adjust XMP, simply repeat this process.
XMP 3.0 is the new specification from Intel for DDR5. XMP 3.0 has three different preset profiles and two user-customizable profiles that can be set in the BIOS and saved to memory. XMP 3.0 also works with Intel’s Dynamic Memory Boost Technology on 12th gen and newer CPUs. When enabled, it will dynamically overclock the memory in real-time, providing performance where and when you need it.
XMP for AMD
For AMD system users, there is good news. Most AM4 motherboards offer full compatibility with memory featuring XMP profiles. Some manufacturers will also optimize the speed and timings of an XMP profile to run on their AM4 boards. For example, ASUS has DOCP, Gigabyte has EOCP, and MSI has A-XMP.
For AM5 motherboards, AMD introduced a whole new overclock spec called EXPO, which is an acronym that stands for AMD Extended Profiles for Overclocking. Similar to Intel XMP 3.0, EXPO supports multiple factory-tuned DDR5 profiles, plus a user customizable profile.

If your fans go into overdrive while you’re playing an intense game or using another intensive program, that means your computer is working as it should. If your computer is working harder to render graphics or process video, it’s producing heat, which impairs the good functioning of your components. Your fans are working overtime to keep your computer’s innards cool. This doesn’t mean you have to endure the noise level, though. PCs and laptops have the ability to adjust BIOS settings, including potentially fans’ behavior. Check your motherboard manual for information on how to enter and adjust settings in BIOS. Every BIOS is different!
Other options for those who can’t or don’t want to edit their fan settings in BIOS include third party software like MSI Afterburner, and SpeedFan. There are also third party accessories such as adapters and control knobs to manually adjust fan speeds. Remember that your fans do need to spin faster when your computer is under high load, so don’t overcompensate too much.
A noisy PC could also be caused by overheating due to lack of airflow. There are multiple options for dealing with this. It may be as simple as adding feet to the bottom of your PC tower or adding a laptop cooling pad or lap desk to your laptop instead of putting it on a pillow or other plush surface. People with closed PC towers may consider upgrading their case to something with better optimized airflow. Rearranging fans to create a better airflow pattern is another option. Of course, a good cleaning can also do wonders. Especially in older computers, fans may be working harder because dust and detritus have built up and are restricting airflow, creating more heat. If your fans are clean but still noisy, they may need to be replaced. This goes especially for if you’re hearing clicking, buzzing, or grinding noises from your fan. That’s a sign it’s on its way out. If you’re buying a new fan, remember: larger fans tend to be smaller. CFM and airflow are important features to consider too, not just dBA or noise level specs.
If the buzzing or clicking you’re hearing isn’t coming from your fans at all, you may need to open your machine up and investigate. Check that there aren’t any loose gaskets or screws. Hard drives are known to make these mechanical failure noises when they begin deteriorating. An occasional click is fine, but more than that and it may be close to failure. If that’s the case, do a backup so you don’t lose your data, and think about how to replace it. SSDs are quieter than traditional hard drives, as they use circuits to store data and don’t include moving parts or spinning disks. Logging in as the Admin
If, during the initial setup, you chose to enable the drive as User Only, enter your password and click to Login. If you enabled Admin & User Passwords, you will still need to enter the User password but then select “Login as Admin” to enter the Admin password and access your device’s full settings and features.
Using the Virtual Keyboard
Remember, you can use the Virtual Keyboard function for additional keylogger and screenlogger protection, as well as the “eye” symbol to quickly check for any typos or errors.
How to use the Encryption
Once you’ve unlocked your drive, you can securely access your stored files, which are automatically encrypted and decrypted every time they are Saved or Opened. Experience peace of mind while you work with this “always-on” security feature.
Using USBtoCloud
During the initial setup for your LP50, you will have the option to accept the USBtoCloud license to automatically backup your data to your cloud storage every time you log in, or you can decline this feature and it will not come up again. If you’ve chosen to utilize the USBtoCloud software, you will first install the application and then select the Cloud option you’d like to use from the list. After authenticating with the Cloud service, you can control your backup settings by pausing, restoring from the Cloud to your device, changing the Cloud service or even the language. The USBtoCloud and IronKey icons will be visible in the right-hand corner of your Windows® taskbar or in the macOS® menu that when clicked will open a menu with additional drive options.
Changing the Settings
Let’s take a look at the IronKey device settings. To do so, right-click the IronKey icon and select ‘LP50 Settings’, where you can change the login password, contact information, device language and other Admin options. Any changes made here will require you to enter your password in order to accept and apply them. If you would like to cancel or continue to modify your changes, leave the password field blank and click ‘OK’ to return to the settings menu.
Resetting the Password
On the Admin Options tab, you can reset the User Password, if forgotten. The new password requirement will be based on what was chosen during the initial set-up process (complex or passphrase) and will take effect on the next User login.

The first step of creating a Time Machine backup is deciding where to store it. External hard drive, NAS, Airport Time Capsule? This tutorial walks you through using Time Machine to make an external HDD backup of your Mac. We use the Kingston XS2000 Portable SSD in this video. Time Machine will let you know how large the backup will be, so plan accordingly. Depending on how much storage you use, you may need less than 500GB, as much as 1TB, or more. After connecting your chosen hard drive, go to the Apple Menu – System Preferences, and select Time Machine. From here, click ‘Select Backup Disk’, and choose your external hard drive. If you desire, you can also encrypt your backup. Time Machine will begin your backup and tell you approximately how long it will take to complete.
You can continue using your Mac while the backup is going on. This is important, because your first backup will likely take a long time, especially if there is a lot of data to backup. When the Time Machine is finished, you’ll receive a notification in the top right corner of your desktop. Time Machine can save backups every hour, keeping multiple copies of each change made to every file, if you choose.
The process is simple to restore files from a Time Machine backup, or transfer them to a new computer. Select ‘Enter the Time Machine’ from the bar in the upper right corner of your desktop. Go to where you last saved the item you wish to restore. If you don’t remember where the item was saved, search for it by clicking the magnifying glass in the upper right corner of Time Machine. You can browse through older instances of the file, deleted files, and even look by specific time period. When you find the correct file, you can select it, double click to preview it, then click restore to return the item to its original location.
A whole system backup requires a little more work. Select Launchpad, then find the other folder, then select Migration Assistant. Enter your system password here to restore your backup. On the next screen, choose ‘From a Mac, Time Machine, or startup disk’. Make sure your Mac is connected to mains power, as this is another time-consuming process. Select the correct external hard drive and click ‘Continue’. Then select the desired backup to restore and click ‘Continue’ again. Find something else to do while the backup is restored.

CPU Performance
When it comes to processing, where the M2 really shines is in its multi-core performance. Compared with the latest 10-core PC laptop chip, the CPU in M2 provides nearly twice the performance at the same power level. M2 delivers 90% of the peak performance of the 12 core PC chip while using just a quarter of the power. M2 is configurable with an 8-core CPU and up to a 10-core GPU. While that's an improvement over the original M1, it can't match the core counts of the beefier M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, which offer CPU core counts of 8-10 and GPU core counts of 16-32.
GPU
Apple claims the M2's GPU can deliver up to 25% better performance than the M1's GPU at the same power level, and up to 35% better performance at max power. The M2 chip offers a number of significant upgrades over the standard M1, including a beefier CPU/GPU combo with more power, improved memory bandwidth, and support for Apple's ProRes and ProRes RAW codecs. There’s also a 16-core Neural Engine built into the M2, just like the M1. It's a specialized processing unit that excels at machine learning tasks and it helps out with everything from image processing to voice recognition. The Neural Engine in the M2 can process up to 15.8 trillion operations per second, which Apple claims is over 40 percent more than on M1.
Dedicated Video Decoder for Video and Photo Editing
Video editing pros can look forward to some improvements in the M2 that weren't present in the M1, including a higher-bandwidth video decoder for the media engine that supports 8K H.264 and HEVC video. You can also now play back multiple streams of 4K/8K video using the ProRes video engine, which seems like good news for those who work regularly with Apple's video format. Users can convert their video projects to ProRes nearly three times faster than before. And Apple says the M2 MacBook Air runs 40% faster in Final Cut Pro and up to 20% faster in Adobe Photoshop than the previous generation. Not only will the content you create look better on the M2, but your image in video calls will look even more pristine thanks to the M2 chip’s improved image signal processor (ISP).

Overall, the M2 is a powerhouse chip focused on delivering impressive performance for everyday tasks with lots of efficiency to keep things running cool for a long time on one battery charge. macOS Ventura, coming this fall, is set to take full advantage of M2 and there’s rumors of this new silicon appearing in a new iPad Pro, including a fresh 14-inch model. Add to that reports of an Apple MacBook Air 15-inch and MacBook 12-inch in the works, and it sounds like we can look forward to more M2-powered devices hitting the market between 2022 and 2023. The first thing you can do to preserve your computer is to keep it off the floor, particularly carpet. Computers in homes with furry friends may have to deal with shedding fur clogging fans and other parts. A stand or shelf that can hold your tower off the floor can be useful, if you don’t have room for it on your desk. Dust buildup can seriously hinder fan efficiency. You may notice a drop in airflow when your CPU begins to run hotter. Your fan may sound louder as it tries to work harder in order to provide the same effect.
We have some simple cleaning tips that can prevent this issue. We recommend that you wear an anti-static wristband to avoid causing static damage to your components while cleaning; or at least frequently grounding yourself by touching the case. When working inside a PC, wear shoes with rubber soles, and avoid working on carpet if you can. As with any cleaning, it helps to wear a dust mask or respirator.
Unplug your computer and move it to somewhere well-ventilated, or at least somewhere with an open door or window. Remove your computer’s side (and if possible, front) panels. Use a lint-free cloth or can of compressed air to clean out dust filters or collections in the case. Vacuum up dust that has fallen outside of the case, but do not vacuum inside.
If your computer is groaning and grinding loud enough to sound human, you may need to deep clean. That requires removing many of the components in the case. We don’t advise removing the CPU, but easily extractable components like RAM sticks, video cards, and hard drives can all come out (and be carefully placed on a non-conductive surface). Clean all crevices, heat sinks, dust filters, and surfaces with compressed air and a lint-free cloth. Be sure to clean each individual fan blade. If blades aren’t moving even after cleaning, they may need to be replaced. You can use isopropyl alcohol on cotton swabs to clean oil or fingerprints off. In covered areas, components such as graphics cards may get dusty. You may be able to disassemble them to clean thoroughly, but some will void your warranty to open and require specific tools. Use compressed air with a straw as an alternative, to dislodge stubborn dust. A damp cloth, not too wet, can also pick up a lot of dust and grime from cases.

Dust your computer every 3-6 months, and deep clean at least once every two years to avoid overheating risks. Deep cleans every year or less is a good habit to maintain to keep your computer ticking along nicely. Accumulation of dust will kill your PC’s fans, which reduces airflow, which causes heat, which ages components. A CPU’s fan failing can kill your entire system. Most modern BIOS have a killswitch for this eventuality though. Until your CPU fan is replaced, however, your PC will be unusable. Frequent cleaning can prevent this from happening for many years, however.

Getting Started
To get started, insert the LP50 directly into your laptop or desktop. The LP50 can be used with compatible PC or Mac devices. When your OS detects the drive, select the Ironkey.exe option in File Explorer for Windows, or for macOS double-click the IRONKEY volume on your desktop then double-click the Ironkey application to start the initialization process. Follow the prompts to select your language, review and accept the license agreement.
Creating a Password
Create a password using either the Complex or Passphrase mode. Complex Password must be between 6 and 16 characters and contain at least 3 of the following:, upper case, lower case, numerical digit, special character. Passphrase Password must be between 10 and 64 characters and can contain any combination of numbers, letters or special characters. Here you will also have the option to enable Admin and User password roles which allow for Multi-password use that the Admin can manage, along with additional features that can be useful. If you want to enable or disable this feature after your LP50 has been set up, you will need to reset the drive and follow these steps to set it up again. Choose your mode, enter your password and a hint to help if it’s forgotten, select “enable Admin and User passwords” and then click “next” to proceed with setting up the User password. Please note that the mode chosen here applies to both Admin and User passwords, and it cannot be changed unless the LP50 is reset. Proceed to create a password for the User role and click next. On this screen, you have the option to enter your contact information, which can include your name, company information, and a way to reach you like a phone number or email address. This is helpful in the event your drive is lost and the information is available for the finder to return it to you. Click ‘OK’ to complete the setup process and unlock the LP50 to securely store your data. To review any changes made in the setup process, simply unplug the drive and plug back in.
Additional Features
After setting up your LP50, you will have the ability to accept the optional USBtoCloud license so that your data is automatically backed up to your cloud storage every time you log in. Or you can choose to decline and will no longer see this feature.

Strengths and Weaknesses of SSDs
The NAND cells in your SSD can only be programmed and erased a finite number of times. This number can be affected by several factors. Extremes of temperature are one such factor. Power outages are another: loss of power during a write cycle can be calamitous. Power surges can also be extremely damaging. Surge protectors and uninterruptible power supplies can protect against these power issues, though.
Monitoring Your SSD’s Status
Maintaining and monitoring an SSD is a relatively simple affair. There are tools like wear leveling to prevent cells from burning out too quickly. There is also SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology), a tool built into most modern HDDs and SSDs. Admin and User passwords are only available if you previously chose to enable that setting during initial setup. You must enter the User password first and then select “login as Admin” in order to access the full settings and features of your VP50. Remember your Virtual Keyboard feature can protect against Keylogger and Screenlogger attacks. Read-Only and Write-Protected modes are also available at login: check the box before you enter your credentials.
When your drive is unlocked, you can access your files. Files are encrypted and decrypted every time they’re saved to the drive, or opened from the drive. This provides greater security for our users. If you are using Windows or macOS, you can access additional drive options from the Windows taskbar or macOS menu by clicking on the IronKey symbol.
Select VP Settings from the menu that comes up after clicking on the IronKey symbol. The popup window will have tabs for login options, password options, language options, and other admin options. Changing any options here will require correctly inputting the Admin password before the options are accepted and applied.
Admin Options include resetting the User password, or forcing the user to change their password on their next login with a temporary password. You can even force a Read-Only feature so that the User cannot write to the drive.

What is Cloud Gaming?
Games hosted and run through cloud services, streamed to devices owned by users who subscribe to a cloud gaming service such as NVidia GeForce NOW and Google Stadia. Cloud gaming has been growing in the last few years, revolutionizing the entry cost to high-performance gaming. However, the issue with playing a game that is hosted on another system is the time it takes for user input (i.e. using the controller) to reach the cloud, and output (video and audio) to reach the user device. This is called latency. Low latency is good, meaning there’s only a short delay between the input and output.
Wi-Fi and Ping
Wi-Fi can substantially slow down a user’s experience of cloud gaming. It’s best to use an Ethernet or other wired connection. If this is impossible, such as when you’re using a mobile device, Wi-Fi is preferred over using cell data. Ping measures the amount of latency, usually in milliseconds. Under 50 milliseconds is considered to be the optimal amount for cloud gaming. 5Hz connections generally provide faster connections with less ping. If your ping is high in spite of following all the best practices, you may need to replace your router. Alternatively, make sure you aren’t using bandwidth for high-intensity online activities such as streaming, downloading, or uploading large files.
Your router may support prioritizing game traffic. We recommend checking that this is an option, and making use of it. A surprising number of people shelling out for the best Internet for gaming fail to use this prioritization feature.

Interface
Many people think the alternative to M.2 SSDs are SATA 2.5” SSDs, and while the 2.5 inch portion is correct, SATA actually refers to the storage interface. SATA and PCIe, or PCIe NVMe, are both types of storage interface that an SSD can use. The primary difference between the two is performance and the protocol, or language, spoken by the SSD. The M.2 spec was designed to accommodate both a SATA and PCIe interface for SSDs. M.2 SATA SSDs will use the same controller currently on typical 2.5” SATA SSDs. M.2 PCIe SSDs will use a controller specifically designed to support the PCIe protocol. An M.2 SSD can only support one protocol, but some systems have M.2 sockets that can support either SATA or PCIe. An easy way to tell the difference between the two drives based on appearance alone is the notches in the connection. SATA M.2 drives will have two notches, while PCIe will only have one.
Performance
So what’s the difference between the two? The PCIe interface is generally faster, as the SATA 3.0 spec is limited to around 600MB/s maximum speed, while PCIe Gen 2 x2 lanes are capable of up to 1000MB/s. And if you think that’s a large difference, PCIe Gen 2 x4 lanes are capable of up to 2000MB/s, and Gen 3 x4 lanes of up to 4000MB/s. Not to say that speed is everything. M.2 SSDs using the SATA protocol will generally be compatible with a wider variety of systems and can be better supported in older models, plus they are usually more affordable when it comes to PCIe. Another thing to consider is that some motherboards don’t have enough PCIe connections to support multiple PCIe NVMe drives. You might have to decide on using the available connection between a graphics card or an NVMe SSD. Other times there may be PCIe lanes available but only a certain type of connection will be able to use NVMe devices at their full speed such as an M.2 connection.
For example compare the Kingston A400 SATA SSD vs Kingston KC3000 PCIe NVMe SSD. The A400 has two key notches, comes in capacities up to 480 GB and has up to 500 MB/s read and 450 MKB/s write - all at an MSRP of under $50. The Kingston KC3000 on the other hand, has one key notch here on the side, comes in capacities up to 4TB and offers 7,000 MB/s read and write speeds. The starting price for this drive is $100.
So to sum up - yes, M.2 SSDs can come in both SATA and PCIe NVMe varieties. PCIe is newer and faster, while SATA is more affordable and more widely compatible with older systems. What you choose is up to you, but I hope these basic guidelines helped a bit in your shopping journey.

There are so many memory options out there today the decision can be overwhelming. Factors such as price, speed, capacity, even motherboard and processor limitations, can all complicate the process. PCIe 4.0 doubles the data rate of its predecessor, PCIe 3.0. It runs more efficiently too, consuming less power. This means that it produces less heat. Performance for modular items like SSDs and graphics cards greatly benefits from upgrading to 4.0.
PCIe Gen 4 devices only achieve their potential in circumstances where the CPU and motherboard are compatible with the protocol. While initially only a handful of AMD motherboards were able to support PCIe Gen 4, these days there are many varieties of Intel and AMD motherboards that are compatible, as well as a range of CPUs.
People will sometimes conflate PCIe and NVMe. It is important to understand that NVMe is a protocol for SSDs, not an interface like PCIe. PCIe NVMe SSDs are far faster than SATA SSDs, but it should be noted that many recent PCIe NVMe SSDs were themselves having their top performance inhibited by the limitations of PCIe Gen 3. Gen 4 has resolved this bottleneck, meaning that PCIe NVMe SSDs are extremely fast compared to the last generation of SSDs. The majority of PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSDs on the market are in M.2 form factor, though others are available if required.
PCIe Gen 5 is already being rolled out, with Intel Gen 5 CPUs already available. However, these are not yet fully compatible with products on the market at present. Technology marches on, but for now, PCIe 4.0 offers the best performance possible for personal computers.

Storage for consoles is often underwhelming out of the box, with capacity for only a few of today’s AAA games. While the Xbox Series X and S, the PS5, and the PS4 will accept external drives (like USB flash drives), the PS5 has very specific internal drive requirements. It will only accept PCIe Gen 4.0 M.2 NVMe SSDs, such as Kingston’s FURY Renegade SSD.
Newer games are built with fast storage in mind, so new consoles will often not permit you to run games from external drives, but devices like Kingston’s DataTraveler Kyson USB flash drive, or the XS2000 portable SSD, are suitable for game storage (to be transferred to the internal drive for active play).
The Nintendo Switch approaches console storage in a simpler way. Only microSDXC or microSDHC memory cards will do, to be inserted in the hybrid console’s storage slot. Kingston’s Canvas Go! RGB is the red, green and blue color model that is used to create a full spectrum of color customization in a wide array of electronics. But when a PC enthusiast or gamer refers to RGB, they usually mean decorative RGB lighting. These colored LEDs can be on everything from peripherals to furniture to wall décor to inside the PC itself. Despite the jokes, RGB does not increase PC performance, but instead just gives a vibe. Whether you prefer a sleek color theme or a unicorn rainbow explosion, I think we can all agree it’s cool to have 16 million plus colors.

RGB is all about customization, it’s not an all or nothing buy in. You can start with small RGB upgrades and find your comfort level if you like. From simple LED strips and LED lamps to peripherals like keyboards, headsets and mice with RGB, there are lots of options. There’s even RGB mousepads, monitors, headset stands. Inside your PC, you can find RGB options on RAM, some motherboards, fans and PC cases with RGB accents as well. You may have even seen RGB home décor with light strips, color changing smart lights, RGB showerheads and even toilets.

This control can be done a few different ways - from a physical button or an IR remote to software solutions. Are there negatives to adding RGB to your setup? Not really. Personal preference plays into it quite a bit. You may prefer a simpler look to your setup and decide RGB isn’t for you. Concerns that RGB can actually diminish PC performance due to heat, power or airflow are by and large outdated and unfounded. RGB components draw very little power from your system and give off a negligible amount of heat, and RGB lights can last over 40 years, so you aren’t looking at constant replacements.
