GroundUP Music NYCBecca Stevens & Attacca Quartet - For You The Night Is Still (Live Performance Video) From 'Becca Stevens | Attacca Quartet' (GroundUP Music, April 2022) Buy/Stream "For You The Night Is Still": orcd.co/fytnis Pre-order album: orcd.co/bs-attacca
Becca Stevens - "This song is a setting of a poem by Jane Tyson Clement. When I first read this poem it brought me to tears. I pictured Jane at the end of her life looking back with bittersweet acceptance of the loss of someone very close to her, maybe her husband (Bob). I found out after I’d set the poem that Jane actually wrote this poem when she was in her early twenties, before she even met the man who she would eventually marry. To me this is one of the marks of great writing: when a body of text can mean different things to different people. The text can time travel, evolve, and live comfortably in the imagined world of every reader."

“It’s Enough” is about the crippling self doubt that artists deal with when trying to finish anything. It was written right in the middle of the pandemic. And it’s in 5. I imagined a guitar solo over the end, but I couldn’t play one along with the other 3 instruments. So this one would be good for a solo challenge! - Nate Wood

This song honors Oxum, the Orisha/goddess of rivers, waterfalls, and fresh water, and a symbol of fertility, beauty, and wealth in the Afro-Brazilian religion candomblé. The ijexá groove creates a chant-like and meditative setting to evoke Oxum, as the lyrics describe the way she enchants those around her, from the fish in the water to any human lucky enough to catch a glimpse of her. We often find inspiration for our music in the stories of the orixas and in nature itself, and were so happy to have Natalie’s sister, Julianna, bring her spirit to life.

Balé Nagô para a rainha do amor Pra Yê Yê Ô Foi alabê quem chamou, abe tocou Quando o xirê começou, ayê bailou Foi alabê quem chamou, abe tocou Quando o xirê começou, pra Yê Yê Ô Foi a rainha do amor Quem me ganhou A ladainha parou e o afoxé chegou

What can be an elusive companion, we can find ourselves waiting, begging, and wondering what we did wrong to not receive the affections of such an essential yet mysterious part of our lives. And like the mysterious lover, once he or she returns, we experience all of the physical and emotional sensations that bring us back into bliss.

LYRICS Wait up another and another and another night For you to come around Standing for hours in the usual place But you’re nowhere to be found I don’t know at all what I have ever done to you To turn your gaze away But in my heart, I still cling to The precious peace you gave
Got me calling out Please, please, begging you please I need your love, got me on my knees Sleep, sleep, beautiful sleep Why did you go? Come back to me
Ooh-hoo, what can I do? Just say the word and I’ll do it for you Please, please, begging you please I need your love, got me on my knees
You got me hanging around But there’s no place I’d rather be Than laying right here in the hole you left When you went from me I’m swimming in the sound of your sweet refrain I remember every single note that spelled your name And the memory of your song
Oh, I can feel you now And you’re all that I know I’ll ever need You heal my heart, you cool my skin You calm the fear that lives within

LYRICS When did we become One of our stories, Stuck and lost in time?
A memory rippling under What’s frozen upon the ground?
Time passes on and still it’s there Me and you How strange for love To live behind you
Now I’m staring at nothing Nowhere to be Casting long shadows behind me I chose the road I chose time Now the wait is depending on you ‘Til the weight lifts I’ll be waiting on you
Now I’m wading through time like water A kaleidoscope falling down Turning each colour As I stare at the facets and muse On your crystalline blues And row upon rose coloured hues
Like fall to winter And winter to spring No one could hold our unraveling I chose the road I chose time Now the wait is depending on you ‘Til the weight lifts I’ll be..
Like birds in formation Each memory of mine They dance in murmeration Freed by time And they’ll come round When the landing is right
Is it me they’re waiting on for truth? What am I holding on to ‘Til the weight gives way to you?

“‘No!’ was the first odd time piece I believe I ever wrote. It’s in 15/8, and I explored different ways to feel/play the 15 throughout the piece. It’s an odd choice for a first single but also a fitting one, as it encapsulates just about everything that fOUR is about. It’s incredibly hard to perform and record, and since it’s all performed live in one take with no pre-recorded backing tracks, it’s different every time I play it!”’ - Nate Wood

After three years of climate research and patient self-discovery, Bangkok-born singer, producer and multi-modal artist Sirintip issues her sophomore release, carbon. Weary from headlines that preach and scold, the internationally acclaimed composer of Thai Swedish descent sought a new method of engagement. carbon, to be released on October 14, 2022 via Ropeadope, presents thirteen tracks of original music as an invitational gesture, an appeal for a new kind of conversation around climate action. Watch the video to learn more about the album and its carbon neutral recording process.

LYRICS red eyes (endangered tigers) Music by: Sirintip Phasuk, Nolan Byrd Lyrics by: Sirintip Phasuk, Katya Diaz
broke out of my chains and now i’m on the run don’t need another master, i’m out i’m done never wanted to fight but if you dare, i’ll take you out i am not your trophy, i am not your prize i was born to stay at home, uncivilized
red eyes no i’m not falling for you no more red eyes no you gotta turn around before i roar
how can you not see, what you did to me? why don’t you just let me be free?
am i the one you fear cry’s noone can hear why don’t you just leave me as me?
locked into the shadows, there i’ll be, the mold between always be behind you, i’m at your mercy, don’t end me need a space to breathe live my way and live in peace you push me out to hunt me make me do your dance but i am not your prize, your prize, your prize
red eyes no i’m not falling for you no more red eyes no you gotta turn around before i roar
how can you not see, what you did to me? why don’t you just let me be free?
am i the one you fear cry’s noone can hear why don’t you just leave me as me?
red eyes no i’m not falling for you no more red eyes no you gotta turn around before i roar

One of House of Waters’ oldest songs, Raindrops represents the emotions behind suspension and release. Utilizing the Brazilian Baião rhythm and traditional American folk-music harmony, Max ZT's solo interpretation of Raindrops is a joyous expression of House of Waters’ long standing relationship with their music and their collaboration.

LYRICS Why are you so negative? Why would you wear such bad vibes When the world is already full of dirty laundry
Why are you so negative? Why do you have to be so mean With yourself, with your kin Obligating me to intervene
Do you need some food? Are you lacking some sleep Do you need a warm embrace? How can I change your mood How can i flip your attitude How can i put a smile on your face?
Can't you just be cool? Can't you just relax and chill And show me what's inside your heart Just be cool Can't you just be nice and real and I promise It will change your life
But you choose to be negative To pay attention to what you eat And forget about the shit that comes out of your mouth
You stick to your prerogative You're weak enough to lose your temper When victory is in calm and in unity
I know we all have our battles I know we all have our flaws But we were all born pure and perfect What you miss must be deep What you need must be essential For you to be so damn insecure
Can't you just be cool? Can't you just relax and chill And show me what's inside your heart Just be cool Can't you just be nice and real and I promise It will change your life
LYRICS My grounded love with your calm clarity What if mine ain’t enough for the love that you need? My grounded love with your calm clarity What if mine ain’t enough for the love that you need? My tongue gets tied and you’re clear when you speak Your roots plant your feet and I’m lost Your roots plant your feet and I’m lost in the Your roots plant your feet and I’m lost in the trees My grounded love with your calm clarity What if mine ain’t enough for the love that you need? My tongue gets tied and you’re clear when you speak Your roots plant your feet and I’m lost Your roots plant your feet and I’m lost in the Your roots plant your feet and I’m lost in the trees
Be still my heart It drifts above Up where the dreams go Out of love
Our love is a crop that’s sleeping (Our love, sleeping) Walk me to the yard and we’ll see what it needs (To the yard)
We’ll dig in the dirt (In the dirt) And pull up the weeds (The weeds) The truth hurts most when we keep it asleep (Only hurts) Our love is a crop that’s sleeping (Our fruitful love)
Walk me to the yard and we’ll see what it needs (With a calm clear heart) We’ll dig in the dirt and pull up the weeds (Your roots plant your feet) The truth hurts most when we keep it asleep (Steady)
Be still my heart It drifts above Up where the dreams go Out of love My heart Is a moon That’s rising Little moon Isn’t full But it’s longing to be This voice Is a star That’s burning
Little voice Isn’t loud But it’s learning to be Be still my heart It drifts above Up where the dreams go Out of love Be still my mind It drifts above Up where the dreams go Out of love Out of love Of love Out of love

GroundUP Music strives to be more than just a record label; we are a home to musicians from all over the world. While it would be impossible to release every piece of music from all of the artists we hold dear to our hearts, we are happy to use our platform to share their music with our community. Introducing GroundUP’s Artist Discovery series, a space where we can continue to support and uplift artists and their stories.

Curandeiro (“The Healer”) speaks of the myriad ways in which he cures: with the forest, the ocean, the sky, his pain, his faith, the meat of the caju fruit, tabaco, cachaça, as well as indigenous herbs and medicines. In the song he is championing his way of life, as an indigenous healer of the Mundukuru people of the Amazon, who live very in touch with nature, attentive to its signs and changes. The connection with nature and the importance of preserving the rainforest and indigenous culture is a major theme across several songs that Ian and Iara Ferreira, the lyricist, have collaborated on. As Ian was composing the music, he was unaware that he had written it in an odd meter time signature. Most of the song is in eleven.

Lee Pardini - This track was written more or less as an excuse to collaborate with two of the funkiest people I know, Theo Katzman and Joe Dart. Everything they touch is funky and I knew they would breathe so much life into this music. The influence of Japanese music, specifically the Yellow Magic Orchestra, is most overt here. I wanted a hard groove, but also pushed myself to keep things simple in both melody and harmony. I didn’t want any distractions from what in my opinion is a pretty infectious rhythm, and with the expertise of Katzman and Dart, Leon Keys came to life.

The title translates to the blessing of Iansá, the orixa/goddess of winds, storms, lightning, and fire. The song personifies her as a storm (“tempestade”) as she is wild and unpredictable. She is tied to the sprits of the dead and is sought in times of difficulty to lead her followers through painful transitions in life. The layers of vocals were intended to conjure up an image of waves crashing ashore from the sea, over the driving samba rhythm.

Zach Brock - The entire recording was in a holding pattern when the pandemic reached the United States. I wasn’t finished writing and didn’t know if we would ever get the chance to play music together again. Thankfully the chance presented itself in January of ’22 and suddenly we had a small window of dates at an amazing venue where we could record audio and video (Sony Hall in NYC). But I still didn’t have a song. As I dove back into the quintet material we had already recorded the song seemed to emerge almost fully formed. We tracked “The Last Song” live with me on violin, Justin Stanton on keyboards, Mark Lettieri on guitar, Jonathan Maron on bass, and Eric Harland on drums. The final track and video was funded through the generous donations of our friends and fans and facilitated by GroundUP Music and Sony Hall.

Becca Stevens - “I wrote this song for my album Perfect Animal (‘15). The lyrics and music were an attempt to capture emotional struggles and transitional anxiety in a positive light, and to see them as forces that strengthen you not just tear you down. This string arrangement was written by my big brother Bill. Reminder was always one of his favorite tracks on Perfect Animal. He did an incredible job of not only capturing key bits of orchestration and background vocals from the original recording, but also maintaining the angst and playfulness of the song.”

LYRICS Just one voice is all I need And I know, we’re gonna be alright Just lock your eyes with mine And I know everything’s gonna be just fine
So smile and reach your hand to me I know that you mean well Don’t tell me it’ll be OK I know that you mean well
Just one voice is all I need Something full, some open sound I’m reaching out to every hope I’ve seen Every shade of silver lining
So tell me am I crazy now Is this the way it’s gonna be? Have you got a shelf made now For people like me?
Touch Hold Thrill High
Without a root And a bloom to seed Yeah you give ‘em cheap Your sweet words too sweet
So tell me am I crazy now? Is this the way it’s gonna be? Have you got a shelf made now For people like me?
Zach Brock - This song was mostly written on a portable MIDI keyboard and sequencer while flying across the country. I had been doing a lot of touring with Snarky Puppy that year and I was inspired to embrace sounds that I had avoided on my previous recordings. I was imagining new music that was louder, funkier, still subtly complex, but also unpretentious. Instead of tiptoeing the line between acoustic and electric as I often have in the past I was now prepared to go all-in with electric instruments and effects. I didn’t care if people knew that a particular sound was being made by a violin anymore. I had to change some things in my mind to allow myself to hear the music. It was time to get dirty.

LYRICS How come you don’t call me anymore? How come, how come, how come? How come you don’t call me anymore? How come, how come, how come?
Have I changed somehow? What’s the use in me asking? No one ever sees this coming Have you already found Someone new to whet your appetite? I hope they’re strong and nice for ya
How come you don’t call me anymore? How come, how come?
Have I become a bore to you? Do I not say the things You wish I’d do (Do I say what you want?) Now that we are turning up in circles? Oh your circles leave me numb But it’s up to you Pick and choose, See me fading from view (you can choose what you want) From your picture perfect frame of you And the who’s who
You and me, We both feed off of change Recreating something known I don’t wanna fade into the wall Like pictures you used to love
Have I changed somehow? What’s the use in me asking? No one ever sees this coming Have you already found Someone new to whet your appetite? I hope they’re strong and nice for ya
How come you don’t call me anymore? How come, how come?
Don’t need to fake no more I'm not going to try anymore I'm not gonna sit and pick it all apart I'm not gonna blame you now You gotta find your own way out So baby go run, go find Whatever it is you've been needing
‘Cause this is it (Baby go and run now) This is it (Go and have your fun now) This is it (Baby go and run) Go on and make your own sun now don't burn out
Becca Stevens - "Nathan Schram arranged this Radiohead song for a group he used to play in called Bryant Park Quartet and adapted it to include vocals for our Mainly Mozart concert in San Diego back in 2014. The plan was for our set in San Diego to be purely arrangements of my original music, but when we realized we were both massive Radiohead/Thom Yorke fans this song was added last minute. Geeking out over Radiohead was one of the first things we bonded over when we met, and eventually our first date was to an Atoms For Peace show at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. I've always been a huge fan of this string arrangement. I enjoy the simmering intensity of it, blasting off into raucous tension and explosive angst. I love what it brings out of the strings, and I really enjoy singing it. It features a part of my voice and character that doesn’t come out in my own writing very often. This is one of the first string quartet arrangements that Nathan ever wrote which is a testament to how strong of a voice he has as an arranger and composer.”

LYRICS Are you such a dreamer To put the world to rights I’ll stay home forever Where two and two always makes a five
I’ll lay down the tracks Sandbag, and hide January has April showers And two and two always makes a five
It’s the devil’s way now There is no way out You can scream and you can shout But it’s too late now
Because you have not been Payin’ attention Payin’ attention Payin’ attention Payin’ attention
You have not been Payin’ attention Payin’ attention Payin’ attention Payin’ attention
You have not been Payin’ attention Payin’ attention Payin’ attention Payin’ attention

I try to sing along but the music’s all wrong ’Cause I’m not, ’cause I’m not I swat ’em like flies, But like flies the buggers keep comin’ back But I’m not All hail to the thief, all hail to the thief But I’m not, but I’m not, But I’m not, but I’m not Don’t question my authority Or put me in a box ’Cause I’m not, ’cause I’m not Oh go and tell the king That the sky is fallin’ in But it’s not, but it’s not But it’s not, maybe not Maybe not

Natalie Cressman - "The title translates to “grating the coconut”, and is a reference to the afro-brazilian dance and rhythm called “coco”, which originated in the northeast of Brazil. Ian wrote the music as a variation on a Guinga song called “O coco do coco”. The rapid-fire lyrics and unrelenting style of singing is also typical to coco and known as “embolada”, which literally translates to “entangling”. The lyrics reflect the festive setting, the driving beat, and coco’s roots in capoeira and other afro-brazilian cultural traditions."

Michelle Willis - "How Come” is about a relationship coming apart, and a few of the emotional rollercoasters we find ourselves on in that process. This song was by far the hardest for us to finish. We tried half a dozen pianos, several drummers and approaches, but in the end I think that Michael McDonald was the soul we needed! What a love-bomb of musical mastery. It is an absurd dream and honor that he graced us with his musicianship. Louis Cato plays a shuffle like no other, and David Cutler plays his signature bass stank. Mathilde Retailleau edited together this beautiful collection of footage shot in the making of this track and general studio madness. Hope you love it!

"Liberty" Lyrics It’s a good thing, me being here Wading, finding on my own ‘Cause you can make yourself anew anywhere Then you find you’re the one you can’t let go
And I don’t wanna be that girl Go where you think I should See the things you’ve seen, Live within your dream Baby I’d have left if it weren’t so good
Like liberty’s beacon in the distance It could be a false omen after all Promises of future kings A space to try again Finding yourself in her call
‘Cause I don’t wanna change like them Try to be tough like them Try to pretend I’ve seen it all And I’ll see it all again
‘Cause it’s hot as hell and smells like shit in here I just turn off and wait to arrive (let the rush pass me by) And it will take the magic from it Till you see another soul dancing through hollowed eyes
Come over here, plenty of action You’ll shine like gold when you’re new The game that you love, your tried and true Starting to move too fast for you
And every time I’ve held another I see you
Like liberty’s beacon in the distance It could be a false omen after all I think that I’ll let it be Until I can’t refute it And that’s just the way it’s gonna be for now
A city takes me by storm, I want everyone and all their warmth
Michelle Willis - I wrote "Liberty" on my last trip to New York before I moved there. I was questioning how much my need of change was just green grass chasing. I was falling more and more in love with the city, seeing myself there, while still carrying memory, grudges and hopes deferred from home. I was thinking about all the people for whom the Statue of Liberty was a beacon of hope, new life, new chances, but upon getting here their lives were far from the dream, and yet I couldn’t help but fall for the energy of the city (edit: five years on, I’m still very much in love with NYC). The vocal harmonies here may as well have been taken from a Michael McDonald background vocal arranging class. I’m certain that subconsciously I was writing with his voice and style in mind. In the outro it’s both him and my mentor and friend David Crosby singing “a city takes me by storm”, which is a beautiful beckoning to me of all that was to come. I had no idea I was about to begin a career writing and touring with Croz.

With minimal touring the past two years and ahead of their highly anticipated live in-studio album, Snarky Puppy looks back at live renditions of some of their most popular songs with their new release, Live at GroundUP Music Festival. Official recordings from their brainchild festival have never been available to the public - until now. Four live-recorded tracks from the festival founded and curated by bandleader, Michael League, the new release pulls one recording from each year of GroundUP Music Festival as we go into the 5th annual event in Miami Beach this May.
"Conjuro" is a song about leaving behind toxic relationships, about having the courage to get out of them and loving yourself enough to move on.

Que se me arranque del alma esta profunda tristeza le pido a dios que me acueste sin tenerlo en mi cabeza

Roosevelt Collier - "Summer Rose" was written for my daughter, Jyla Rose - My one and daughter who gives her father so much life. I decided to put this song out now to share something special with all you guys, 4 years after the original 'Exit 16' release.
Michelle Willis - “I first envisioned this album as a double album, one crafted in studio, and one live, same eleven songs. I was curious about what version would feel the most true. So, I got planning, and we did it! We made two glorious albums. David Crosby flew in to Toronto and performed as a guest at the live concert with my OG bandmates in a renovated buddhist temple (Ya. It was special). I hope you enjoy this delicious version of Trigger, ft. my great friend David Crosby."

LYRICS You gonna fight all your life Without a foe in sight Yeah you’re a trigger Just waiting for any hand to pull tight
No weapons in sight But you bring ‘em out and it’s only You who’s bleeding through the night Honey you ain’t got no right
I hope someday real soon You’ll see there’s nothing you need to prove
Think you been given lemons all your life And so you squeeze the sour and burn it into their eyes But you don’t know that Good fruit like yours is hard to come by
I hope you wake up real soon ‘Cause you got a way to turn a whole lot of love into a bruise I hope you wake up real soon ‘Cause I can’t bear to hear you being so cruel I hope you wake up real soon ‘Cause you got a way to turn a whole lot of love into a bruise I hope you wake up real soon ‘Cause then one day you’ll see who’s really fightin’ you
This song is a meditation on the power of the ancient redwoods, the way that being in nature strips us down to our core and help us live more honestly. The song is also about love, and how the enchanting environment can be the catalyst for love to be confessed and grow over time. And just as the redwood grove’s beauty and power doesn’t diminish with age, the love conceived there is equally timeless. "Part of this is autobiographical, as Ian and my musical partnership began in the redwoods of Cazadero. I felt like the beauty of the music I experienced there that first year grabbed me and actually changed the course of my life." - Natalie Cressman

LYRICS An auburn word in song will come To rouse a village in the sun A haunted whisper in the wood Grabbed me like no one ever could
A rising tide to lay it bare To leave I Love You in the air Was it a part of some design? That time would roll and make you mine
The moon ascends, a hand contends, a figure bends The world suspends and when it ends I see a feeling in disguise Dancing in your eyes
Spun out I see, what it could be, I wander free Where I can see above it all and keep my feet on solid ground Rooted in the sound of you
We met as strangers long ago Before the daggers chance would throw Now thick as thieves we’re far away Somewhere the stars are holding sway
Your breath is fanning a new fire Caught in the wind of your desire We find a grove and leave it there to join the songs hung in the air
A walk alone, a secret grown into its own As we were thrown to the unknown A beacon shone by dying moon Leaving us too soon
The threat of dawn, a day came on The curtain drawn and moving on You came along and lingered on when I came to Drawing me right out to you
In autumn night a song will come To ring out right when day is done A passing wind would penetrate And hold me arm in arm with fate So be it redwood pine or maple when I see the light and leaves upon you A moment rushes in to meet me, ever luminous the sign As time has faded every leaf inside our fable you will find me falling Over and over with a love that still defies reason or rhyme
In autumn night a song will come To ring out right when day is done A passing wind would penetrate And hold me arm in arm with fate
So be it redwood pine or maple when I see the light and leaves upon you A moment rushes in to meet me, ever luminous the sign As time has faded every leaf inside our fable you will find me falling Over and over with a love that still defies reason or rhyme
