California Rare Storm Update and NOAA Statment
updated
It's been several years since Earth has had a solar storm of this size coming from sunspots smack in the middle of the sun, said Tom Berger, director of the Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colorado.
Solar storms happen often, especially during peaks in the solar cycle, and don't directly harm people. But what makes this one more worrisome is its location on the sun along with its strength, he said.

Park officials said Thursday they're evaluating how to address the problem.
Meanwhile, they're telling visitors not to hike into the affected area. They say the danger of stepping through a solid-looking crust of soil into boiling-hot water is just too high.
The hot spot has closed Firehole Lake Drive, a 3.3-mile loop six miles north of Old Faithful that takes visitors past Great Fountain Geyser, White Dome Geyser and Firehole Lake.
Naturally changing thermal features often damage Yellowstone's roads and boardwalks. Park spokesman Al Nash says fixing this damage will be a bit more challenging than the typical repair.

1. Satellite imagery and surface observations indicate that the area of low pressure about 40 miles east of Veracruz, Mexico, has become a little better defined this morning as it moves slowly west-northwestward. However, the associated thunderstorm activity is currently poorly organized. A tropical depression could form before the low reaches the coast of eastern Mexico later today or tonight. An Air Force Reserve reconnaissance aircraft is scheduled to investigate this system this afternoon. Whether a tropical depression forms or not, this disturbance could produce heavy rains, along with life-threatening flash floods and mud slides, over portions of southeastern and eastern Mexico during the next few days. * Formation chance through 48 hours...medium...70 percent. * Formation chance through 5 days...medium...70 percent.
1. Disorganized showers and thunderstorms continue near a stationary low pressure area over the southern Bay of Campeche. Despite strong upper-level winds, some development of this system is possible over the next day or two while the lows drifts generally northwestward near eastern Mexico. This disturbance will continue to produce extremely heavy rains, along with life-threatening flash floods and mud slides over portions of southeastern Mexico during the next few days. * Formation chance through 48 hours...medium...30 percent. * Formation chance through 5 days...medium...30 percent.
Boris is drifting slowly to the north and its center is nearing the Mexican coast. Boris is expected to make landfall Wednesday near the border between the Mexican states of Oaxaca and Chiapas.
Tropical storm alerts have been issued for the Pacific Coast of Mexico, from Salina Cruz eastward to the Mexico-Guatemala border. Scroll below to view details regarding the system as well as locations of tropical advisories.
Little if any strengthening is expected to occur before landfall. However, winds are not the primary threat from this storm system; freshwater flooding from extremely heavy rainfall will be by far the largest menace to life and property.
Flash Flood, Mudslide Threat
Extremely heavy rain is a major concern over parts of southern Mexico and Guatemala from this slow-moving system. Widespread rainfall totals of 1 to 2 feet are possible in southern Mexico, and a few places could see over 30 inches of rain. Generally 5 to 10 inches of rain expected farther east in Guatemala.
In a region where mountains reach over 10,000 feet above sea level, this amount of rainfall will almost certainly result in life-threatening flash floods and mudslides. Five people in one Guatemala family died in a landslide caused by heavy rains this past weekend, before this disturbance became a depression.

Regional warnings
A tropical storm WATCH is in force from Salina Cruz to the Mexico - Guatemala border
Rainfall totals of 10 to 20 inches are forecast for southern Mexico, up to 30 inches in the mountains of Oaxaca and Chiapas. Life-threatening flash floods and mudslides are likely in these areas.
News from - http://tropicalcyclones.blogspot.com-
located about 275 miles south-southeast of Salina Cruz, Mexico, have
become a little better organized overnight and early this morning.
Environmental conditions appear conducive for additional development
and a tropical cyclone could form later today or Tuesday while the
low moves slowly northwestward to northward. Regardless of tropical
cyclone formation, this system is expected to produce locally heavy
rains across portions of western Central America and southeastern
Mexico this week. These rains could cause life-threatening flash
floods and mud slides in areas of mountainous terrain.
* Formation chance through 48 hours...high...80 percent
* Formation chance through 5 days...high...90 percent
Eastern Pacific Update - A stationary trough of low pressure interacting with a large
upper-level low is producing widespread cloudiness and disorganized
showers over much of eastern half of the Gulf of Mexico and across
the Yucatan Peninsula. Environmental conditions are expected to
remain unfavorable for the development of this system as it moves
little this week.
* Formation chance through 48 hours...low...near 0 percent
* Formation chance through 5 days...low...10 percent

1. An elongated and nearly stationary area of low pressure located over
the Bay of Campeche extends northeastward into the south-central
Gulf of Mexico. Although shower activity is currently disorganized,
some slow development of this disturbance is possible this week as
environmental conditions become marginally conducive.

A LARGE AREA OF DISTURBED WEATHER LOCATED SEVERAL HUNDRED MILES
SOUTH OF MANZANILLO MEXICO IS ASSOCIATED WITH AN ELONGATED AREA OF
LOW PRESSURE. THIS SYSTEM IS EXPECTED TO MOVE GENERALLY NORTHWARD
AND THEN NORTHEASTWARD TOWARD THE COAST OF MEXICO OVER THE NEXT
COUPLE OF DAYS. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS APPEAR TO BE FAVORABLE FOR
SOME DEVELOPMENT DURING THE NEXT DAY OR SO...BUT UPPER-LEVEL WINDS
ARE FORECAST TO BECOME LESS CONDUCIVE WHEN THE DISTURBANCE
APPROACHES THE COAST LATER THIS WEEK. THIS SYSTEM HAS A MEDIUM
CHANCE...50 PERCENT...OF BECOMING A TROPICAL CYCLONE DURING THE NEXT
48 HOURS...AND A MEDIUM CHANCE...50 PERCENT...OF BECOMING A TROPICAL
CYCLONE DURING THE NEXT 5 DAYS. REGARDLESS OF DEVELOPMENT...LOCALLY
HEAVY RAINS COULD AFFECT PORTIONS OF SOUTHWESTERN MEXICO OVER THE
NEXT FEW DAYS.
ANOTHER SPECIAL TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK WILL BE ISSUED BY 8 AM PDT
WEDNESDAY...OR SOONER IF NECESSARY.
A strong, shallow 6.0-magnitude earthquake rattled northern Thailand on Monday afternoon, geologists said, shaking tall buildings in Bangkok hundreds of kilometers to the south.
The quake, which struck 32 kilometers southwest of the town of Chiang Rai, was felt in the capital, Bangkok, 800 kilometers to the south, residents said.
People were evacuated from the main airport in Chiang Rai. Cracks also were visible in some building exteriors and roads, but no casualties were immediately reported.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centered at a relatively shallow depth of 7.4 kilometers. Shallow quakes are generally felt more widely.
Major earthquakes are rare in Thailand, although tremors frequently strike the northern portion of the country.
The area where the earthquake struck is a remote mountain retreat popular with foreign tourists near to the border with Burma, also known as Myanmar, and Laos.
