(Rolling Work Table Casters)I'd been meaning to add a lower shelf to my work bench for a while. Given that I'm shooting so much for the new online courses, I figured now was the right time! But, I wanted to get rid of the old 4" casters, and find something that would let me lower the table to the floor, where it would be more grounded and stable.These retractable casters are everywhere now. They're not only fairly cheap, they're also very effective! I added a set of 4 to the long ends of the table (this would keep them out of my way when I'm building stuff at the table).They work great! I thought that the retractable casters would get in your way as you walk around the workbench, but you really don't even notice they're there. They mount with a simple template, several screws, a split washer and a nut. Very easy to install!The lower shelf is basically just a 2x4 frame with a 3/4" plywood top. (Bolt Extractor And Breaker Bar Method) Removing rusted, stripped or deformed bolts and nuts can be extremely difficult. Metal fatigue sets in, and bolts and nuts lose their shape an integrity. This short video from The Honest Carpenter will show you a simple set of tools that can help extract nearly any nut or bolt! BOLT EXTRACTORS are unique sockets that are meant to bite into metal as they counter-rotate (in a loosening, counter-clockwise direction). THINKPRO sent me their 17-pc. set to test. These bits have scalloped, spiral-shaped inner walls. They're also made from high-tempered chrome-molybdenum steel. Their construction allows them to really clamp down on the FLATS of a nut or bolt, and create grip. By using a BREAKER BAR (often 1/2") as the leverage tool for your bolt extractor, instead of a typical ratchet or torque wrench, you can create the leverage you need to break rusted bolts loose. This short video will explain how hand saws really work!Western hand saws tend to cut on the push stroke, because they have forward-raking teeth.Japanese hand saws tend to cut on the pull stroke, because they have back-raking teeth.Furthermore, Japanese saws have two serrated cutting edges to the blade. The edge with the lower tooth count (Teeth Per Inch) is often for ripping, or rip cutting. The edge with the higher tooth count is often for crosscutting.Traditionally, Western saws were divided between ripping saws and crosscutting saws.More recently though, Western hand saws have been made with "tri-ground" teeth. Essentially, these teeth are ground or beveled on three sides, and they don't rake or lean quite as steeply. So, Western hand saws still primarily cut on the pull stroke, but they're also more effective now in cutting in both directions. This short video from The Honest Carpenter will show you the 5 STRONGEST ways to hang things from the ceiling!Typical plastic expansion anchors, even self-drilling plastic anchors, aren’t strong enough to hang things from the ceiling!They rely on compression within the drywall or plaster itself, and the TENSIONAL FORCE of gravity is too strong for this type of connection.Instead, I like to at least use TOGGLE BOLTS...and the newer TOGGLER-style bolts are even more convenient.If I need to hang something over 10 lbs. from the ceiling, I’ll often FIND A JOIST to hang from instead. Joists are the framing lumber in our ceilings and floors, and it’s extremely strong. You can easily hang over 100 lbs. from a joist with the right hardware!If I can’t find a ceiling joist where I need one, I may install BLOCKING from above in the attic. Or, I may cut open the drywall and install it from below.If you don’t want to install blocking pieces, you can also add a surface cleat to the underside of the drywall, and mount screw hooks or eye hooks into the cleat.And, in some rare cases, you can hang threaded rod from a framing member above the room, and mount things to the underside of the threaded rod with washers and bolts.Thanks for watching!The Honest Carpenter

It's called LOOSE PLATE CUTTING. This short video will explain what it is, why it's dangerous, and how to avoid it by using proper plunge-cutting techniques!A PLUNGE CUT is a cut that starts in the field of the board, rather than at the edge.Loose Plate Cutting is a technique of cutting with the circular saw where the operator loosens the sole plate, and uses the free-swinging action of the plate to make a plunge cut into a piece of wood.This is especially dangerous because the sole plate is a crucial safety feature on the circular saw (sometimes called a skilsaw or skill saw). It helps maintain stability, and also CONTROL DEPTH.Loose plate cutting is dangerous because the loose sole plate wants to slide around, and it's very hard to control depth as you sink the circular saw blade.DON'T USE IT! Instead, set your sole plate depth, and make plunge cuts the right way...Use the front of the sole plate as a pivot point for the rest of the saw. Lift the blade guard lever, and establish that the blade is positioned at your cut line as much as possible. DON'T have the circular saw blade in contact with the wood surface when you pull the trigger. Instead, make sure it is slightly above the wood surface, then pull the trigger. Let the saw spin all the way up.Slowly lever the saw down into the material, sighting down the wall of the blade to make sure it is indeed cutting at your marked line. Lower until the sole plate is sitting flush on the wood surface, then begin driving the cut forward like normal. (Carpenter Discussion)Power saws are expensive, and therefore the decision to get rid of one is not easy. But there are certain defects that I think just can't be dealt with.For instance, my table saw has developed a prolonged BLADE ALIGNMENT ISSUE. The arbor/blade mount is slightly bent, which causes the cut to open up a bit at the back.This problem gets compounded when I BEVEL the table saw blade. The blade kerf draws the board away from the fence badly at the back of the cut. This results in a flared cut--and it's also dangerous!Blade alignment can be adjusted, but the table saw tends to walk itself back. For that reason, I probably have to get rid of it.Also, my circular saw fell off a table and got pranged on the concrete floor. Now the blade guard won't operate smoothly--it gets trapped in the upper housing and won't spring back. This is a NO-GO ISSUE for me! I have to get rid of it.When would you get rid of a power saw? Cutting Freehand: Never cut freehand with a table saw! Always use the rip fence or miter gauge or a crosscut jig.3. Squeezing the Cut: Using too much force with your outside hand can cause the wood to bind on the table saw blade. This can trigger kickback.4. Ripping Boards Wider Than Long: Trying to rip boards along their narrow length is unstable, because it forces the small end against the fence. Make this crosscut another way.5. Levering: It's easy to accidentally rotate the front end of a heavy board up when you begin cutting. Don't do this--if the board drops down, the saw blade may bind.6. Failure To Catch Outfeed: When long boards pass off the back end of the saw, they will get pulled down by gravity, pulling your end up. Have someone catch the outfeed gently, or let it rest on something.7. Pulling Small Pieces From the Back: This brings your hands too close to the spinning blade. Push them through with a push stick instead.8. Dropcutting: Don't try to lower a piece onto the spinning table saw blade. If it binds, the wood will get thrown, and your hands may contact the blade!9. Don't Set Blade Too High: Table saw blades only need to extend about 1/4"-1/2" above the top of your wood stock.10. Reaching Over the Table Saw: When a cut is complete, don't reach over the spinning blade to grab the piece. Push it through with push stick, and then turn off the saw.11. Ripping Narrow Widths: Ripping any cut under an inch can be dangerous. Consider making this small width the offcut (away from the rip fence) instead.12. Standing Behind Your Stock: If kickback occurs, you may get hit with a flying board. Water-based stains are harder to apply evenly, and are prone to peeling if misapplied.TRANSPARENT AND SEMI-TRANSPARENT STAIN are non-film forming. BUT, sheetrock anchors can be very handy for small, lightweight wall-mounting. And when I need to use them, I always reach immediately for SELF-DRILLING DRYWALL ANCHORS.Self-drilling sheetrock anchors come in plastic and metal. I prefer the plastic anchors.They're screw-shaped, with a sharp point on one end, and a phillips slot on the head. To install self-drilling anchors, you simply press them to your drywall surface and turn them with a SCREWDRIVER, or DRILL, or DRIVER.The point acts like a cutter head, boring through the drywall paper. When it punches through, the anchor sinks to the threads. As you turn it into the drywall surface, the threads bore their way in, cutting their own channels.Drive until the drywall anchor is flush, then stop!Be sure to use the supplied screws. These have the right gauge and thread count for the sheetrock/drywall anchor in question.That's how you use self-drilling drywall anchors!THE HONEST CARPENTER

The rotation of the bit, and the shape of the cutting lips on the tip of the bit, can cause the bit to wind out in little revolutions.To prevent this, you can simply punch a little divot or impression in the surface you're drilling into. This small divot gives the tip of the drill bit something to lock onto. It will stay put until the drill tip can begin carving material.A SPRING-LOADED CENTERING PUNCH is a tool that punches material quickly, with one motion. Centering punches look like nail sets, with a sharp pin at one end, and a knurled body.To use one, just place the tip of the punch at your mark location. Then with the heel of your palm, press down on the back of the tool. A spring will gather energy in the tool, then an off-center pin in the tool will slip into a hole, causing the tool to punch. IMPACT WRENCH Explained!)Bosch recently sent me a batch of power tools to test out, and in that haul was a tool I'd never seen before--the Bosch FREAK. Half-impact wrench, half-impact driver, it's an oddity that seems to solve a long-standing two-tool conundrum! IMPACT WRENCHES are drill-like tools that act as electric versions of pneumatic impact wrenches. They have a square anvil for a driver head, so they can mate with and hold various types of wrench sockets bits.IMPACT DRIVERS are stubby, drill-like tools, with a hex collet, that are meant to hold special driver bits. They utilize sort of a motor disengagement feature to create a lot of torque for driving fasteners with increased control and reduced bit slippage. These have always been separate tools, and DIYers and pros have had to keep both tools in order to effectively drive/back out screws or nuts and bolts.The Bosch Freak is the first tool I've seen that effectively combines these two similar but different functions into one tool. The driver head is a hollow 1/2" anvil that can also house a hex-shank impact bit.What's even more extraordinary is that the Freak can hold both bits at once--a driver bit and a socket!I've read that it tests out at slightly lower torque values than some other top-of-the-line impact wrenches. But this came as little surprise to me, since this is effectively a dual-function tool. Overall, I was quite impressed with it's torque and power, and I think it's high-speed bit-swapping is a HUGE gain for a small reduction in torque.I want to thank Bosch Tools for sending it out to me! This is because we shifted our pressure treatment process in 2009.For years, Chromated Copper Arsenate was used to treat the vast majority of lumber in USA. But CCA contains a trace amount of arsenic, which caused concern. So, the EPA encouraged companies to switch it out for two other treatment fluids: Alkaline Copper Quaternary (ACQ)Micronized Copper Azole (MCA)These fluids don't protect lumber quite as well, and they also contain a higher concentration of COPPER, which makes them expensive to use.In order to avoid very high lumber prices, lumber companies began grading treated lumber and treated wood based on how much treatment chemical was present in various grades of lumber after drying out. This quantity is known as TREATMENT RETENTION.These retention quantities fall into USE CATEGORIES, since different retentions are suitable for various ideal uses.Use Categories fall on a scale of 1A to 5C. However, using a multitool can be tricky because of its unique shape. This short video from the Honest Carpenter will show you several Multitool tips and mistakes!Multitools are awkward to use because of their straight-line shape. They're kind of like a flashlight, with a tubular handle that is also the motor housing. They take a little finesse to use, and a good system for cutting.Mistake #1: Failure to brace your cutting position--Be sure to rest part of your hand, or wrist or arm on a stable surface, usually your cutting surface, before you initiate cutting. This will keep the multitool stable and help you make a clean cut.Mistake #2: Failure to score a cut line--Before you just start plunging the blade, etch a fine kerf with the multitool, about 1/16" to 1/8" deep, all the way across your cut line. This will sever the top layers of wood, and give you a good line/groove to follow for the cut.Mistake #3: Choosing the wrong blade--Check the tooth length on your multitool wood-cutting blade. Really long blade teeth are better for rough, aggressive, fast cuts. Finer teeth are better for slower, finer, more controlled cuts.Mistake #4: Overdriving the cut--It's never a good idea to take too much material on one cut pass. This will often just bind the blade. Instead, focus on SWEEPING YOUR CUT LINE with the multitool blade. This will clear waste, and driving your cut slowly, with control.Mistake #5: Cutting on Low Speeds--Cutting wood works better with high blade speeds. Variable speed triggers confuse this issue on multitools. For wood-cutting, rev to your max speed and keep the multitool saw pinned there the entire time.Mistake #6: Using dull blades--This is kind of a universal rule, but especially true for multitools. I decided to soundproof/noiseproof it a little better, and it seemed like a good opportunity to explain how some of these soundproofing concepts work!There are really three methods for soundproofing rooms in construction:1. DECOUPLING--This involves creating an air buffer between walls or materials. Sounds gets weakened as it passes in a wave through a wall. Forcing it to do this twice causes the sound to dissipate.2. ADD MASS--Sound also has a harder time moving through denser materials. Adding two layers of 5/8" drywall one on top of the other, staggering the tape seams, is a great way to deaden sound in a room.BUT, this works even better when you add a layer of DAMPING COMPOUND in between the drywall layers. When sound hits the first drywall layer, it flexes the soundproofing layer inside. This causes the soundproofing compound to stretch and shear the sound waves, TURNING THEM INTO HEAT!3. ABSORPTION-- Some materials, like foam and insulation, are just good at absorbing noise and sound. Adding rockwool insulation, or even batts of fiberglass insulation, to wall interiors can help drastically cut down on sound transference.I also added NOISEPROOFING SEALANT to the perimeter of my room, and the perimeter of my new drywall patch over the door. This can be detrimental, because the rise of strong impact drivers has created more confusion surrounding what type of bit to safely use. This short video from The Honest Carpenter will explain the differences between Power Bits, Impact Bits, and Insert Bits, and show how to best use them!Power Bits are longer silver-colored bits that are meant to chuck directly into keyless chuck power drills.Insert Bits are shorter (1") silver bits that CAN chuck into standard power drills. BUT, they're really best suited for use with a BIT HOLDER or EXTENSION SOCKET. These devices were created to chuck into drills, and provide an appropriate 1/4" socket for quickly changing between insert bits.Impact Bits are often black with colorful bands around the neck (or, in some cases these days, gold in color--Makita bits especially. These driver beats are rated for use in impact drivers, which create a substantial amount of torque.Impact Bits are capable of flexing slightly in their torsional shaft so they don't break during heavy usage.Impact Bits also have a POWER GROOVE near the bottom of the shank, which lets them chuck easily into the quick-release collet on impact drivers. It's also very SLICK, which helps with fixture removal later!Pipe Dope is a similar product, but it is actually a liquid lubricant rather than a material sealant. These ribs grab wood from within when the nail is embedded.Spiral shanks have long tapered flutes that travel up the length of the shank. Spiral shanks rotate as they are driven in, creating pathways for their contours, similar to screw threads.Ring shanks are most commonly used in roofing and roof sheathing, as well as subfloor and plywood underlayments, and siding.Spiral shanks are especially common in siding installation, as well as decking. They're good for hardwood applications as well, so they get used a lot for various types of hardwood flooring.Both of these nails perform well in areas that are very prone to wood shrinking and swelling, as well as places that get subjected to heavy weight stress, like floors.The use of ring or spiral shank may be mandated by code for certain applications in various areas. But, in other situations, ring and spiral shank fasteners are overkill! (I categorize this as basically any hole over 1/2", which is where most twist bits top out.)Speedbors are tri-flute--they have three spiral channels for clearing waste wood as they bore. They also have a screw tip, spurs on the tips of the webs, and a low-friction coating.The screw tip draws the bits into wood, and the spur tips and sharpened lips chop and gouge wood quickly. The flutes eject this waste wood in a cloud.Speedbors, when properly use, can drill/bore through 4x material in under 5 seconds!But, Speedbor drill bits are extremely aggressive! They're best used for framing materials, and applications where appearance doesn't matter.They cause a good amount of blowout at the back, and the entry hole isn't that clean either.Also, they're very powerful and sharp! (Pro Plumber Tips For Flushing Your Water Heater GAS/ELEC)A good, modern water heater can reasonably be expected to last up to 12 years if properly maintained.But the biggest detriment to water heater lifespan is SEDIMENT BUILDUP.Drinking water contains minerals, such as CALCIUM, POTASSIUM AND MAGNESIUM. When water sits undisturbed in a tank water heater for hours at a time, these heavier minerals will gradually fall to the bottom of the tank.Down here, the minerals collect into a hard slurry. This slurry dampens the effecitveness of the heater, and the minerals also eat away at the walls of the tank.The ANODE ROD in the tank water heater is meant draw some of the minerals, but it can't get them all. So, it's a good idea to flush or drain the water heater tank at least annually!There are two easy methods for doing this...POWER FLUSH METHOD: Simply hook a garden hose up to the boiler assembly drain line at the bottom of the tank. Leave the cold water supply on, turn the 360 ball valve on the drain line, and let the hot water in the tank slowly be replaced with cold water form above. The swirling action of the new water in the line will stir up sediment, kicking it out through the spigot at the bottom. Then turn off ball valve, unhook and rain hose, and you're done.GRAVITY DRAIN METHOD: Shut off the cold water supply, and turn the heating element off (electric), or dial down to pilot, away or vacation mode (gas). Hook up a hose to the valve at the bottom of the unit, and open the valve. (Lead hose somewhere outside or into a functioning drain.) Turn on several hot water taps in the house to allow air into the system. The Unit will slowly drain, flushing out sediment. When it is finished, turn off the lower valve, unhook the hose, turn on the cold water supply. When the tank is full again, turn off upstairs faucets, and switch back on the heating element, or turn the gas dial back up to desired temp.Thanks for watching!The Honest Carpenter

(Simple Wall-mounted Bike Hook/Rack!)One of the best places to mount anything is in the corner of a room. This is because most corners in wood-framed houses contain DEADWOOD.Deadwood is solid framing lumber that can easily be drilled and fastened into. The vast majority of stick-built houses are framed with studs forming solid 90-degree surfaces in the corner.I wanted to utilize this space for my corner bike rack, so I cut a long, beveled triangular wedge from a scrap piece of 2x4. (I also chamfered the back of this triangular wedge so it would hopefully tuck into the corner more easily.)I positioned this wedge strip in the corner and predrilled through it into the wall. Surprisingly, I didn’t hit studs directly behind the wedge! This happens sometimes due to framing irregularities.It’s really not a big deal though, because there is ALWAYS wood somewhere in the corner. I found a reliable stud on the right-hand side, and fastened the wedge to that with 3” deck screws. (The wall also was not completely square, but that’s not uncommon either.)I then pre-drilled and attached a simple $3 bike hook into the triangular wedge. I set the bike hook at just the right height to catch my front wheel when I stand the bike up.To finish the project, I made a 90-degree inside corner out of two short, narrow boards, and fastened it to the lower portion of my wall corner. This L-shaped component is simply there to keep the bottom tire from rubbing up the wall.That was the whole project! For many applications, this cuts out the hole-boring phase, where you have to use a drill and high-tempered drill bit to first bore a hole for your fastener.A company called Teks first popularized self-drilling screws in the late 1960s, but now numerous companies produce them (though Teks is still an industry leader for professionals.)Self-drilling screws have a shovel-shaped head with two beveled gullets. When the screw turns against a metal surface (or other material), the head pares out a depression. With enough force and rotations, the self-drilling screw head will eventually bore its own hole all the way through a metal surface. The threads of the self-drilling screw will then tap their own holes in the material as well.Note: SELF-TAPPING SCREWS are slightly different. They do not bore their own hole in this fashion. (3 Sink Disposal Repairs...More Tips + Tricks!)Typically, garbage and sink disposals stop working because some foreign object—like a spoon, or piece of glass or ceramic—has fallen into them and jammed them up.Disposals aren’t meant to grind anything this large or dense! They mostly meant to grind up, or “macerate,” small, wet bits of food.To fix your disposal, you’ll have to remove any foreign objects. But first, be sure to TURN OFF THE UNIT AND LEAVE IT OFF until the repair is complete. (You may want to flip the appropriate circuit breaker as well.)Sometimes, objects can be fished out from above with tongs. If not, you may have to remove the unit and overturn it. (See video for how to dismount garbage disposal.)Once foreign objects are removed, the sink disposal can often be “Reset” by pushing a small button on the underside of the canister. This button acts like a small circuit breaker. Once reset, the disposal will often be able to work again!Also, you can sometimes free the grind plate in the unit by using an allen key to rotate the grinder from below. It’s good to clean your garbage disposal frequently by grinding ice with dish soap and water. This will clear gunky matter in the grind chamber.But remember, don’t put anything larger than a dime in the disposal. And don’t use clog-clearing chemicals—they can damage your disposal, and harm your plumber!Thanks for watching!

Some are ready for use straight out of the can, and some need to be mixed with various tints and colorants.To determine if a paint product needs to be mixed, just read the back or bottom of the label--there will often be a warning or notice. ("Base Paints," for instance, always need to be mixed with tints.)For exterior repaint projects, Nick trusts Sherwin Williams Duration line--especially their "Super White" product, which has excellent coverage and hide qualities. However, Duration is very expensive...often $80+ per gallon!So, how can you get your basic, cheaper white paint products to function like a top-grade white paint? The key is adding a little more tint to the mixture, and in the white color/volume combination...Nick recommends this mixture:2 oz. White Tint + 1/32 oz. Black Tint per 1 Gallon White PaintThis extra tint combination will make cheaper white paint cover and hide as well as more superior white paint products.
