You get a D in math when you're five and your dad loses it. Right there you decide you're never going to be that kid again.

Thirty years later you call it work ethic.

Most of what we call personality is just the shape we took to keep from feeling something once. The people pleaser. The one who goes quiet. The one who has to be the best in the room. Different strategies, same moment underneath.

Here's where it gets tricky. You find the pattern, you trace it back to your dad, you feel like something happened. But naming it isn't leaving it. Usually we just slide over to the other side of the coin and call that healing.

The whole coin has to go. The thing that happened and the person you built to survive it.

What leaves in this window leaves for good.
