Hood County Courthouse, Granbury (2015)
When a tornado tore through Granbury in 1968 and badly damaged the Hood County Courthouse tower, the building nearly came down for good. It took a local newspaper publisher named Norma Crawford leading a grassroots campaign to convince county commissioners the tower was worth saving. Today it's one of the finest French Second Empire courthouses left in Texas.
Architect W.C. Dodson built this native limestone landmark in 1890 and 1891, and he topped it off with a Number 16 Seth Thomas clock that cost $1,465 back then, a small fortune at the time. That same clock still keeps time over the historic Granbury square more than 130 years later.
Restoration work in 2000 and 2008 brought the exterior and interior back to their original glory, including the district courtroom's two story configuration. Step inside and you're standing in a National Register landmark that almost didn't survive to tell its own story.
