Yes, you can sing (even professionally) and breathe in a corset. in this video, I explain why that's the case, including how corsets can often even encourage the strengthening of the diaphragm by providing a source of counter tension. I've been singing professionally since I was a teenager, and I've also been wearing corsets daily for the past few years, so I've experienced firsthand how they can arguably positively impact breath control and vocal technique during vocal performance.
There are a lot of misconceptions about historical fashion out there, and this is yet another video that aims to debunk corset myths.
That's not to say, however, that corsetry can't be misused, like everything else in life. I choose not to tightlace for this exact reason, but what comes as a shock to people is that a lot of people did not tightlace historically, and if they did, it was generally for short durations of time. That's why I approach historical corsetry in the manner I do, from the perspective of "regular tension" corset wearing (not tightlacing) whilst also taking breaks by wearing lightly boned jumps or corded corsets on my days off, and also focusing on regularly practicing back strengthening exercises.
