The Linux kernel is well known for its "no regressions" rule, nevertheless quite a few reported regressions apparently are never addressed. This mentorship session will show reporters how to avoid that fate, while also explaining developer how to handle regressions duly:
- how to check if something actually qualifies as regression
- how to ensure a regression is seen by everyone that needs to be aware of it
- who is obliged to find what's causing the regression
- how fast developers are expected to act
- how to stand in for your rights as reporter or kernel developer
- how regression tracking helps both reporters and developers
In the summer of 2022, Intel and the Linux Foundation hosted a roundtable of stakeholders from across the Web3 ecosystem to discuss how various communities define and practice sustainability. The roundtable discussed solutions across different dimensions, such as more computationally efficient blockchains, the use of green energy, and implementing technical and accounting standards. The report summarizes three areas of action: governance of ecosystems, cultivation of knowledge, and greater advocacy for infrastructure innovation.

In traditional data streaming, the data retention limit has been governed by the local disk storage capacity of the cluster, forcing users to provision additional hardware for longer data retention. A new approach to streaming data, the cloud-first storage model leverages the public cloud as the default storage, enabling users to take advantage of a more economical, scalable and reliable medium – object stores such as AWS S3 and Google Cloud Storage. This approach not only significantly lowers the storage costs of streaming data environments, it also opens valuable new use cases that combine both real-time and historical data.

In the real world, there's a phenomenon called a “phantom traffic jam” or a “traffic wave.” This is when there is a standing compression wave in automobile traffic, even though there is no accident, lane closure, or other incident that would cause the traffic jam. A similar phenomenon is possible in computer networking or storage I/O, where your data can slow down for no apparent reason. In this talk, Pavel is going to describe when and how this effect can arise and what can be done to discover it.
Linux is common sense in Automotive; for infotainment, display clusters or gateways. Centralization of embedded control units increase the demand of mastering complexity of large vehicle computers. Functional safety becomes more and more important. As part of instrument clusters, warning signs (so called tell tales) are an ideal entry point to address safety criticality in Automotive use cases. Their demands to the operating system help to explain the way forward towards more complex use cases from the domain of e.g. driver assistance. This talk will describe elements needed to enable Linux in safety critical automotive use cases based on the tell tale use case as addressed within the Linux Foundation’s ELISA project. It shows similarities and differences to other use cases like park distance control or surround view and supports the Automotive Grade Linux instrument cluster. By setting the use case into a wider system context of a centralized vehicle computer architecture, it allows adopters a step-by-step approach to enable Linux in safety critical applications and increase the responsibility of Linux in smaller chunks. An overview of the activities within the other ELISA project working groups and their relation to the automotive working group completes the talk.
The last decade was coined a “pre-Cambrian explosion” for open source: ecosystem contribution models were still rapidly evolving to support a booming global community of developers both engaging in, and relying on, open source projects. As we move into a new era of globalized Open Source, we’re observing an exponential increase in the rate of OS project releases. A combination of tooling, automation and a growing generation open source developers all play a role in this acceleration. In this talk you’ll learn security-aware best practices for automating the decision in globalized Open Source projects, as well as the metrics and processes that help to ensure timely, focused decision making around technical roadmaps with stakeholders from around the world. Lastly, we'll cover how new initiatives within the Open Source Security Foundation are taking an ecosystem approach to improving access to security readiness for every project's security through education, automation, and SBoMs that can help you to measure, predict and avoid bleeding edge supply chain security attacks.

This session will show how FDC3 2.0 can improve an end user's workflow for salespeople and research analysts across buyside and sell-side institutions. The session will walk though a real life use case demonstrating how FDC3 allows a number of applications interact across a user's desktop. It will also show how users can interact across multiple desktops and inter-firm. The session will highlight the advantages of using the FDC3 protocol as well also focus on some of the technical and implementation challenges encountered. Finally the session will discuss 'the art of the possible' and how the latest FDC3 version opens up new opportunities for workflow solutions.

A growing list of developing countries and mobile money operators are turning to digital public goods as a path forward to achieve their interoperability and financial inclusion goals. A new post-COVID-19 digital renaissance is emerging. More than 100 countries have made digital government-to-person (G2P) payments possible during COVID-19 and now have the potential to scale up their interoperable payment system designs to provide permanent relief to their unbanked populations. Digital public goods (DPGs), such as Mojaloop, an open source software recognized by the Digital Public Goods Alliance, are the catalyst to interoperable payments systems and G2P payments that could bring the 1.4 billion people unbanked into the digital economy – especially since most citizens already own a simple mobile phone. If successful, the $10 trillion-dollar informal economy could have a direct pathway into the digital financial sector.

Digital wallets are secure places where we can keep money, IDs, and credentials. More generally, they can be the convenient interface we feel comfortable to keep & manage all types of digital assets or any confidential or valuable data. How can such universal wallets be realized? How can these wallets from different vendors and/or industries be universally interoperable over the Internet/web in the same way the Internet/web itself is universally accessible? In this talk, Wenjing will lead a discussion on this vision of trust over the whole Internet/web, what tremendous benefits - financially and socially - it can bring, and most importantly, how we can achieve it through an Internet inspired architecture and open source. Prominent open source implementations & community specs, e.g. DIDcommv2, KERI, DWP/Web5 (TBDex), libp2p, Indy/Aries, OpenID/FIDO etc. will be presented as case studies to demonstrate path for interoperability based on this architecture. We can have the cake and eat it too.

Low-latency, high-performance electronic trading networks predate the emergence of cloud computing by more than a decade. Due to the stringent performance demands of this workload, schemas are explicit, encoding is binary and transports are unreliable. Cloud computing, on the other hand, favors self-describing text-based encoding and stateless transports like HTTP. This results in excellent interoperability between services and teams, but results in inefficiencies that compound at scale. This talk will discuss the challenges of bridging these two worlds and illustrate patterns that the speaker has used to solve the problem of analyzing granular electronic trading data in the cloud. The audience will be taken through a history of common electronic trading protocols such as FIX, ITCH and Simple Binary Encoding. The speaker will identify the differences between high and low-context encoding, and describe the obstacles encountered ingesting common electronic trading formats into cloud-native services. The session concludes with a pattern for integrating the two worlds harmoniously by deconstructing schemas, encodings and transports.

During the session, entitled: “Proactive and polymorphic adaptation of multi-cloud deployments”, Katarzyna will present how to implement Multi-Cloud native strategies using an advanced open-source framework. Such framework allows for Cloud-agnostic Cross-Cloud deployment and optimized management of a Cloud application based on flexible monitoring, context-aware maximization of the application owner’s utility of the deployed application, and autonomic reconfiguration based on the application’s current execution context. During this session, we provide a practical introduction to Multi-Cloud application modelling, configuration, deployment, and adaptation. All stages of the Cloud deployment planning and designing process will be shown. Also, all the key steps in the deployment and autonomic application management will be demonstrated.

If you aren't currently addressing accessibility for screen readers, this talk will cover the industry standards. If you are following industry standards, this talk will cover how underwhelming those standards are, and what you can do about it to set your product apart from the competition. Julianna Langston has written an open source javascript library, Chart2Music, which provides an easy way for developers to seamlessly integrate accessibility into their charts and graphs without having to take on privacy or maintenance concerns, and while delivering a delightful experience to end-users.
