And within a few years, a significant part of the American pilot community was arguing over whether flying it counted as real flying. TWA vice president Jack Frye sent a letter to several aircraft manufacturers on the second of August, 1932, asking for something that could compete. Donald Douglas wrote back with a proposal for something better. The aircraft Douglas built in response. The DC-1, then the DC-2, then the DC-3 made the 247 commercially obsolete within eighteen months of its entry into service. Only seventy-five Boeing 247s were ever built.
