Bakooni Hand - Star Wars Martial Art Lore in Under a Minute Star Wars Explained 2024-05-13 | Did you know Snoke’s Praetorian Guards were skilled in a Jedi form of martial arts? Along with Teras Kasi, Echani, and Nar Kanji, all deadly fighting styles in the Star Wars universe, the Praetorian Guard learned Bakuuni Hand, a martial art first detailed in the Jedi Path reference book. It taught Jedi to strengthen their body with the Force while striking targets, allowing them to pulverize rocks with a single hit. Unfortunately for the Praetorian Guard, as far as we know they were unskilled in the Force, and even if they were, Bakuuni Hand was probably no match for a blow from a lightsaber. #starwars
How Maz Kanata Got Anakins Lightsaber Star Wars Explained 2024-05-12 | How did Maz Kanata get ahold of Anakin’s lightsaber? In The Force Awakens she says it’s a good story for another time. Well, did you know there is a version of that story out there already? Or should I say a “vision” of that story? In Star Wars Visions Volume Two, the Aardman short film, I Am Your Mother, features a shop selling several items that were once touched by Luke Skywalker. The lightsaber is present, and you can see Maz Kanata’s hand steal it just before a Jawa does the same thing. So…this is *not* a canon version of events at all. It’s simply meant to be a joke. When was the Super Star Destroyer Executor Built? Star Wars Explained 2024-05-11 | When was the super star destroyer Executor constructed? It was completed at the Kuat shipyards shortly after the Battle of Yavin. It was originally meant to be the flagship of General Tagge, who had survived the destruction of the Death Star after investigating the supposed Rebel base on Dantooine. But an Imperial doctor named Cylo attempted a coup against Darth Vader and the Emperor by stealing the massive ship. He was stopped by Vader, and the Sith Lord’s success prompted the Emperor to entrust the Executor to his apprentice. Vader Force choked General Tagge shortly after.#starwars

Despite his ancestry, he was highly xenophobic. Emperor Palpatine selected him as one of the twelve Grand Admirals, and sent him to oversee the Empire’s expansion into the Outer Rim. After the Battle of Endor, Pitta carved out a territory for himself in the Corellian Sector. But another Grand Admiral, Josef Grunger, fought his former peer during his own campaign to take control of Coruscant. #starwars

Does Max Rebo Have Arms? Star Wars Explained 2024-05-09 | Does Max Rebo have arms? I guess it depends on which action figure or Funko Pop you’re looking at. Or rather, whether you’re talking about Star Wars canon or Legends. Legends stories and merchandise tend to show Max with two arms and two legs, standing inside of his red ball organ. But the original design for Max had him sitting on a cushion, playing music with his feet. That initially got lost in translation, and so Max Rebo and the rest of his species were presented with four limbs. More recently, it would seem that canon stories have made an effort to honor Phil Tippett’s intent, giving the character two legs and no arms. That said, there have still been moments in canon where the four-limbed version can be seen. #starwars
Nightsisters Star Wars Culture Lore in Under a Minute Star Wars Explained 2024-05-08 | Here’s everything you need to know about the Nightsisters of Dathomir from Star Wars in under a minute! They were just one of many clans of witches on their homeworld. How they came to the planet is shrouded in mystery, but it would appear the Dathomirian people first arrived to the planet after taming purrgil and using them to travel from the planet Peridea in a completely different galaxy. There they learned to wield magick, an aspect of the dark side that they connected with through the magical, green ichor that was abundant on Dathomir. They also tamed the mighty rancors that were native to the planet, using them as mounts. For a time, a Great Mother named Talzin unified her people into a single clan, and they grew in power on their planet. But she sought more power under the tutelage of the Sith Lord Darth Sidious, who instead took her son as his apprentice. After Maul’s supposed death and miraculous return, she worked towards revenge, failing to assassinate Sidious and his new apprentice, Tyrannus, several times. Eventually the Sith Lords grew tired of her plots and during the Clone Wars sent General Grievous to massacre the Nightsisters. They were nearly wiped out, and Talzin herself was killed soon after, but still some survivors like Merrin or Morgan Elsbeth remained. And the Great Mothers’ return to Dathomir could signal a new golden age for the witches… #starwars

Or at the very least he had a strong suspicion. The novel Tarkin says, “Very early on in their partnership—soon after both had been introduced to the secret mobile battle station—Tarkin grew convinced that Vader knew him much better than he let on, and that behind the bulging lenses of his face mask, whatever remained of Vader’s human eyes regarded him with clear recognition. More than anything else it was those initial feelings that had provided Tarkin with his first suspicion as to Vader’s identity. Later, observing the rapport the Dark Lord shared with the stormtroopers who supported him, and the technique he displayed in wielding his crimson lightsaber, Tarkin grew more and more convinced that his suspicions were right. Vader might very well be Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker, whom Tarkin had fought beside during the Clone Wars, and for whom he had developed a grudging appreciation.”

Why Barriss Offee Aged So Fast in Tales of the Empire Star Wars Explained 2024-05-06 | Why did Barriss Offee age so much between her second and third shorts in Tales of the Empire? The Fourth Sister barely seemed to age at all, but Barriss is looking far more wisened. At the end of the short Realization, she promises not to let the Jedi die. At the start of The Way Out, she is referred to as the Healer. She must have done something to earn that reputation. My current guess is that she has been using her own life energy to heal others through the Force. Rey describes Force healing as exactly that. Giving some of your own life or Force energy to another. And we saw Ben Solo give so much of himself that he became one with the Force. Megadroids Star Wars Droid Lore in Under a Minute Star Wars Explained 2024-05-05 | Do you know about one of the most obscure battle droids the Separatist army created during the Clone Wars? Megadroids were developed under the codename Operation Titan on the planet Golatha early in the conflict, until Yoda heard rumors of their production. He and Anakin Skywalker traveled to their factories to destroy them, and were successful, except for one that was activated to fight them. It was four times the size of a standard human, and made out of a durasteel alloy that was invulnerable to lightsaber strikes. Yoda was able to dismantle it by climbing inside of the massive droid. But the remains of one megadroid survived all the way into the Galactic Civil War. Jabba the Hutt acquired it and briefly used it to guard his palace. Grand Admiral Declann Star Wars Character Lore in Under a Minute Star Wars Explained 2024-05-03 | Nial Declann was a member of the Republic Navy during the Clone Wars, and continued his service after the rise of the Galactic Empire. His unnatural talent as a TIE pilot revealed his sensitivity to the Force, and he was allowed to study the nature of the dark side. When his training was complete, Palpatine promoted him to the rank of Grand Admiral. He was stationed on Naboo for a time after the Battle of Yavin, but was summoned to the second Death Star along with several other Grand Admirals for the Battle of Endor. Declann was on board the superweapon when it was destroyed. #starwars

Forces of Destiny shows Leia, Chewbacca, and R2-D2 traveling to Ord Mantell to meet with Maz Kanata, hoping she could help them free Han. There, they are attacked by the bounty hunter Boushh, but they incapacitate their assailant. Maz suggests the armor was just her size, and would be the perfect ruse to gain an audience with Jabba. Later, Leia dons the armor and poses as Boushh in front of the Trandoshan bounty hunter Bossk. She pretends to kill Lando Calrissian and publicly stages Chewie’s capture to build up the legitimacy of her claims in Jabba’s Palace. #starwars

Why Does Darth Vader Take Orders From Grand Moff Tarkin? #starwars Star Wars Explained 2024-04-30 | Why does Darth Vader take orders from Grand Moff Tarkin? There are several reasons for this. First, Vader isn’t part of the Imperial navy or military. He doesn’t receive command of the Imperial Fleet until the time in between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. At this point, he reports directly to the Emperor. But if his master orders him to go to the Death Star and do whatever Tarkin says, he will obey. The Death Star was under Tarkin’s command, especially after the death of Orson Krennic at the Battle of Scarif. We see that Vader has some free reign, especially when he starts choking Admiral Motti without consequence, but he will ultimately follow Tarkin’s instructions. We also know that Anakin Skywalker had respect for the Grand Moff back during the Clone Wars thanks to the rescue mission on Lola Sayu, *and* we know that mutual respect for one another only grew in stories like the novel Tarkin and the Darth Vader comic by Charles Soule.

Talon Karrde Star Wars Legends Lore in Under a Minute Star Wars Explained 2024-04-29 | Do you know the Legend of Talon Karrde? He’s not a canon character yet, but he is another creation of Timothy Zahn’s that might one day appear in future Mandoverse stories just like Grand Admiral Thrawn. He was a smuggler that capitalized on the death of Jabba the Hutt. Karrde was able to carve out some of the Hutt’s territory for himself. He rose in the ranks of the criminal underworld, but still kept his reputation as an honorable smuggler. As Grand Admiral Thrawn presented a growing threat to the New Republic, he created the Smugglers’ Alliance to fight against him, believing the Empire’s return would be worse for their business. Their cooperation was one of the few developments that Thrawn did not anticipate in his campaign against the New Republic. Did You Know There was a SECOND Battle of Hoth? Star Wars Explained 2024-04-28 | Did you know there was more than one battle on Hoth? The ice world is best known as the site of Echo Base, the secret headquarters used by the Rebel Alliance after they were driven from Yavin 4. After extensive construction, the rebels were only able to call the base home for a matter of months before being discovered and driven away by the Galactic Empire. Scavengers moved onto Hoth after the battle to scrap the snowspeeders and fallen AT-AT walkers. When Did Darth Vader Get Command of the Imperial Fleet? Star Wars Explained 2024-04-27 | How did Vader get command of the Imperial fleet? In A New Hope, Vader was basically the Emperor’s attack dog, and existed outside of the Imperial military. But in The Empire Strikes Back, he leads the entire starfleet. How did that happen? As the sole survivors of the Battle of Yavin, Emperor Palpatine place much of the blame for the loss of the Death Star on his apprentice. He also challenged Vader with several rivals that could potentially take his place. For the following months, the Sith Lord removed his enemies one by one until none were left standing. He also worked with the rogue archaeologist Doctor Aphra to create a personal droid army that could use to overthrow the Emperor. Although that plan fell apart, Palpatine was pleased to see his apprentice following in the footsteps of the Sith of old. Reaffirmed of Vader’s dedication to the dark side, Sidious gave command of the Imperial fleet to him.#starwars
Grand Admiral Batch Star Wars Character Lore in Under a Minute Star Wars Explained 2024-04-26 | Martio Batch was a rival to Grand Admiral Demetrius Zaarin. They were both involved in weapons development, and Batch was specifically tasked by the Emperor to research cloaking devices. His work led to an entire super star destroyer and research facility that had cloaking technology, and he was the designer of the TIE Phantom, a starfighter that could become invisible. The Rebel Alliance learned of the project and successfully destroyed the entire production line along with the super star destroyer and production facility. Having failed his Emperor, Batch fled to the Outer Rim, where his crew eventually mutinied and killed him shortly after the Battle of Endor. #starwars
Why did Boba Fett Stay at Jabbas Palace for a Year? Star Wars Explained 2024-04-25 | Why did Boba Fett seemingly sit around at Jabba’s palace for the entire year between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi? Sure, he often worked for the Hutt, but he didn’t have an exclusive contract, and was in high demand as a bounty hunter. The Star Wars comics set in between episodes five and six show us the reemergence of Crimson Dawn, a rival criminal syndicate to the Hutt Clan. They had kind of a grand reopening party surrounding the theft and auction of Han Solo’s carbonite slab. Orchestrated by Qi’ra, her stunt was meant to throw the criminal underworld into chaos, and she absolutely succeeded. The Hutt Council was slaughtered, leaving Jabba as the sole survivor, and the rest of the syndicates went to war with one another. Jabba was nervous and basically hiding on Tatooine, so when Boba Fett finally recovered and delivered Han Solo, he promised the bounty hunter more credits if he stuck around. Fett correctly guessed that the Hutt wanted protection from Crimson Dawn, but agreed to stay after being handed a large sum of credits. He even went so far as to remove Jabba’s other security measures, like a huge battle droid, so the Hutt would be even more reliant on Boba. #starwars

Did Princess Leia Forget About Obi-Wan Kenobi? #starwars Star Wars Explained 2024-04-23 | Why does Leia address Obi-Wan as General Kenobi in her holographic message? Did she forget about their adventure together nine years earlier? No, of course Leia didn’t forget the very meaningful friendship they formed in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. But the message she was sending her old friend was part of a secret mission. Even though Leia’s attempts to convince Darth Vader and the Empire she was on a diplomatic mission were obvious lies, I’m sure she would still be trying to do everything she could to protect her family. If that hologram were intercepted, it would have been terrible for her to say, “Hey Ben! Remember nine years ago when you rescued me and we were chased by Inquisitors and Darth Vader almost killed you? And remember how my family has known exactly where you were hiding for the past nineteen years? Well, I need a favor now.” No, that would have been terrible! It’s far safer for Leia to act as if she and the Organas hadn’t had any contact with Kenobi since the Clone Wars. Not that it did Alderaan any good in the end.

Shoguns Star Wars Easter Egg #starwars #shogun Star Wars Explained 2024-04-22 | Shogun on FX is just about to wrap up. If you haven’t seen it, first of all it’s awesome. But more relevant to this channel, showrunner Justin Marks has confirmed it has a fun connection back to Star Wars. The character of Toranaga can often be seen wearing robes that, according to Marks, intentionally match the color scheme of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s robes. This was done as an homage to actor Toshiro Mifune, a legendary Japanese actor that played Toranaga in the 1980 version of the Shogun miniseries. He appeared in several Akira Kurosawa films, which were a heavy influence on George Lucas during the making of Star Wars. Bazine Netal Star Wars Character Lore in Under a Minute Star Wars Explained 2024-04-21 | Do you know the backstory of Bazine Netal, the First Order agent seen briefly in The Force Awakens? She was an orphan from the planet Chaaktil, taken in by a pirate named Delphi Kloda, who taught her several martial arts. At the age of fourteen she was sent on her first mission, where she was burned and scarred on the side of her head. But she was successful, and for the next six years her reputation as a bounty hunter and thief grew. Five years before the events of The Force Awakens she was hired by an anonymous client to find a case that once belonged to a stormtrooper who served at the Battle of Endor. She was successful, despite her former mentor, Kloda, attempting to undermine her. But she killed him for his trouble. It’s unconfirmed, but I believe the case she retrieved contained the helmet of Darth Vader, and that her anonymous client was Kylo Ren. #starwars

What is a Gundark in Star Wars? Star Wars Explained 2024-04-20 | Han Solo tells Luke he looks strong enough to pull the ears off a gundark after recovering from the wampa attack. So what is a gundark? They were large, ferocious creatures from the planet Vanqor. They had four arms, massive claws, and a mouth full of sharp teeth. They were formidable opponents, so telling someone they were strong enough to pull the prominent ears off of one would be an impressive feat. They first appeared in The Clone Wars episode Dooku Captured, where they were seen to be trouble even for Obi-Wan and Anakin. R2-D2, however, handled them fairly well in the episode R2 Come Home.#starwars
Grand Admiral Zaarin Star Wars Character Lore in Under a Minute Star Wars Explained 2024-04-19 | Demetrius Zaarin was one of the very first Grand Admirals promoted to the rank, two years before the Battle of Yavin. He led the Empire’s research and development team for starfighter technology. In that role he helped create the TIE Advanced and the TIE Defender, a starfighter credited to Grand Admiral Thrawn in canon stories. Despite his status within the Empire, Zaarin sought more power, and attempted to overthrow the Emperor himself. He allied himself with Arden Lyn, one of Palpatine’s Force-sensitive agents, to successfully capture the Emperor over Coruscant. But the coup was stopped by Darth Vader and then Vice Admiral Thrawn. He fled the Chiss and his forces all the way into the Unknown Regions, where his ship malfunctioned and exploded. Thrawn was promoted to the rank of Grand Admiral as Zaarin’s replacement. #starwars
Ugnaught Star Wars Species Lore in Under a Minute Star Wars Explained 2024-04-18 | Here’s everything you need to know about Ugnaughts from Star Wars in under a minute! They were originally from the swampy planet Gentes, but unfortunately many of them throughout galactic history were taken from their homes as slaves. They could be found across the galaxy, often working in industrial areas. But some could be seen holding other notable professions, like the scholar Korin Pers. The Ugnaughts who lived on Cloud City were freed by the Corellian man who hired them to help construct it. They were considered to be some of the hardest workers in the galaxy, and they could live for up to two hundred years. #starwars
What Are the Bommar Monks in Return of the Jedi? Star Wars Explained 2024-04-18 | What are the spider-like droids seen wandering around Jabba’s palace? They are known as B’ommar monks. They were organic beings who believed they needed to remove all physical sensations to achieve enlightenment. So they took their brains out of their bodies and placed them in jars, which were then attached to those spider droid things. Jabba’s palace was originally a monastery for the B’ommar order. But since they were just walking brains in jars, the building was taken over by a bandit named Alkhara, who was eventually driven out by Jabba. After his death it passed to Bib Fortuna, and then Boba Fett. All of the monastery’s owners felt no need to force the B’ommar monks out, and they were allowed to stay. #starwars

Did Obi-Wan Kenobi Forget About R4-P17? #starwars Star Wars Explained 2024-04-16 | Why did Obi-Wan say he can’t remember owning a droid in A New Hope? Did he forget about R4-P17?? He flew with throughout the entirety of the Clone Wars, from Attack of the Clones all the way until Revenge of the Sith, where she was destroyed. I would argue that Obi-Wan never owned R4. She was simply the droid that was assigned to him by the Jedi Council. I also think we have to remember that Obi-Wan never had the kind of relationship that Anakin or Luke Skywalker developed with R2-D2. When Artoo went missing in The Clone Wars episode Downfall of a Droid, Kenobi tells Anakin, "Well, R2 units are a dime a dozen. I'm sure you'll find a suitable replacement." So even though R4 faithfully served Obi-Wan for three years…it *might* be possible that he did let her memory fade away.
