His work covers a wide range of genres. Over the years, he successfully directed a comedy (Schnitzel Paradise), a war film (Winter in Wartime) and a very much grisly western (Brimstone - his first film shot in English). He is now working on a thriller set in Jakarta in 1946.
In October, Koolhoven was at We Are Playgrounds - The Art Department, an online fest dedicated to concept art and design, to talk about the essential ingredients of a memorable story and how to put together and work with a high budget (Brimstone cost around € 15 million, not too shabby for a European production).
We were at Playgrounds as well and we seized the opportunity to pick his brains on the future of cinema, the streaming wars and how COVID-19 is impacting the film industry.
At Playgrounds, we talked with other traiblazing creators, too. Over the next weeks, we're gonna publish a series of inspiring video interviews with them about the future of storytelling, the impact of the Coronavirus on cinema, animation and video games, and how to make it in the creative industry.

Echoes of IS is a web documentary that consists of captivating stories by people who have all been affected by Islamic State. Ashes to Ashes is a surreal tragicomedy in virtual reality about how a dysfunctional family handles the dying wish of their grandfather. Seen through the ‘eyes’ of the deceased, this 10-minute VR ‘one-shooter’ exposes a family’s bizarre relationships, as their subjective realities continue to unravel.
The goal of Ashes to Ashes was to explore how visual storytelling works in a filmed 360 3D world. As part of this exploration, we invited three directors from different professional backgrounds to join forces: Steye Hallema (VR), Ingejan Ligthart Schenk (theater), and Jamille van Wijngaarden (film).
The common rules in film making do not apply in virtual reality. How do you record sound when filming in 360? IN VR, the viewer is at the center of the experience. So what is their role? Are they the proverbial 'fly on the wall,' or a character in the film?
Directed by Geert van de Wetering, this extended 'making of' film follows the cast and crew of Ashes to Ashes for ten months, from the casting up to the world premiere of the film at the VR Days Europe 2016. Let the inquisitive voice-over guide you on the exciting journey of making this VR film.

MEAT THE FUTURE
With the world’s population expected to reach nine billion people by 2050, it’s becoming increasingly unsustainable for humans to consume the same quantities of meat like we do today. With the future public debate on ‘Frankenmeat‘ in mind, Submarine Channel and the Next Nature Network present Bistro in Vitro – an online science fiction documentary about the future of meat, with a chic fictional online restaurant as its main platform. Bistro in Vistro aims to reflect on the ethics, aesthetics and prospects of lab-grown meat. We want to make people think and instigate a discussion on the future of a possible new food culture.
WHAT IF?
What if a restaurant like Bistro In Vitro would exist tomorrow, what would it look like, and what would be on the menu? Bistro In Vitro dares you to step into the imagined, but not unimaginable future of meat production and consumption. We challenge you to think outside your comfort zone, while preparing you for future foods that might end up on your plate one day.

Ascent from Akeron is a post-apocalyptic graphic novel about a group of kids in a dystopian world devoid of art and heroes. Things change after they accidentally discover a chest filled with ancient superhero comics dating back to our 20th century. Inspired by images of heroes, passion, fight, and resistance they rise up against the sinister forces that rule over their city of Akeron...
Ascent from Akeron is a cool new project produced by the Emmy award-winning studio Submarine Channel, who brought you previous hit motion comics HOTEL by Han Hoogerbrugge, the interactive graphic novels The Art of Pho and The Killer and much more.
‘Ascent from Akeron’ is 12 episodes. We are funding the first three episodes with our own time and money. You can help make the other 9 episodes. How? By sharing the project on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, etc. And of course by donating to the campaign on Kickstarter: http://kck.st/1VNPupK

This unique creature is wet, slippery and wriggly and occupies the grey area between a sea anemone and a sex toy. The throat tickler beckons from your plate with its come-hither motions and clings to your lips as you slurp it down. Because they have no organs or nervous system, Throat Ticklers are not truly alive. Their seductive movement is caused by sodium altering the voltage differentials across cell membranes, causing the muscle tissue to contract. A dash of salty soy sauce gives the throat tickler’s tentacles a sensual surge. Never before has a tickle in your throat been quite such a hedonistic experience.

When Julia was younger she wanted to be a balloon. Now she's an English girl in New York. Julia lives and works in Brooklyn and is one of the leading young illustrators of today, named one of the "25 New Faces of Independent Film" by Filmmaker Magazine, and named "One of Three Animators to Watch" by Creative Review.
We caught up with Julia at last year's http://playgroundsfestival.nl to discuss one of her first animated works, My First Crush - an anthropomorphic reimagining of the obsessive world of first loves - as well as her thesis film 'Belly' and an exploration of what inspires her.
Julia's work tends to explore the motivations behind human relationships, representing characters as mildly ridiculous anthropomorphic animals. Since her graduation from the master Animation of The Royal College of Art in 2011, her films have played at festivals worldwide including Sundance, SXSW and Annecy, with awards from festivals including AFI, Chicago, San Francisco and The Netherlands.

Exploring both sides of the story, Last Hijack Interactive allows you to uncover the complex realities behind piracy in Somalia though the eyes of a pirate and a captain, an advocate and a journalist, a parent and a wife. Combining live-action video shot on location and animation, the interactive experience gives the user the opportunity to navigate the real stories of these people, building to the hijack itself and the resulting aftermath. How can one such event influence an entire society? What's the global impact of a single hijack?
The project will have its world premiere on March 11th, 2014, at the amazing SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas.
The interactive experience is the counterpart to Last Hijack, a semi-animated feature length film directed by Femke Wolting (Viktor & Rolf "Because We Are Worth It", Another Perfect World) and Tommy Pallotta (A Scanner Darkly, Collapsus) which had its world premiere on February 7th, 2014 when it opens the Panorama Dokumente program at the prestigious Berlinale Film Festival.
Directors: Tommy Pallotta / Femke Wolting, Interactive director: Mirka Duijn,
Producer: Submarine Channel: Bruno Felix & Femke Wolting, Production Manager: Nicolette Nol, Interactive developer: Gijs Kattenberg, Interface Design: Christiaan de Rooij, Illustrations: Gustavo Garcia, Animations: Dustin Kershaw, Christiaan de Rooij,

Somalia is the worldwide capital of piracy, and Mohamed is one of Somalia's most experienced pirates. But in his homeland, a failed state, Mohamed is just another middle- aged man trying to make ends meet. Far removed from the glamour and adventure of the pirates of books and movies, Somali pirates face increasing scrutiny and stigmatization both at home and abroad. Now Mohamed is engaged and both his parents and his in-laws pressure him to change his ways before the big wedding day. Mohamed senses that the golden age of piracy may be coming to an end, and with pressure mounting to provide for his loved ones, he must decide whether to risk everything for one last hijack....

Picnic with Cake: Episode 1
Mr. and Mrs. Dog baked two delicious cakes for a picnic with all their animal friends.
But once they arrive at the picnic spot....The cakes are missing!
Picnic with Cake is an animated series and cross media adaptation of the famous picture book "Picnic with Cake" by Thé Tjong-Khing, published in more than 13 countries. Each of the 13 episodes, as well as the 25 minute special, tells the central storyline of the picnic, the discovery of the stolen cakes, the unmasking of the thieves and the happy ending with cake. Every episode of the story is told from the perspective of another animal. In this way the picnic story takes the shape of a thriller, a slapstick or a romantic comedy, all tailored to the level of understanding of our target group.
The Picnic with Cake Website
The heart of the website is an interactive story world where children can join the animals enjoying the Picnic with Cake. While watching the story, they can jump between characters and switch perspectives. Children can look through the eyes of the funny rats when they are accused for stealing the cakes and switch halfway to the perspective of the frog to see how he steals the cakes in the mean time. Besides the interactive videoplayer, the website offers downloads, character backgrounds, and a special section for parents and teachers. The website uses no text except in the parents area, and all functions and navigation on the site is designed for and tested on the target audience.

Picnic at Home & At School

This makes Picnic with Cake an ideal conversation starter at home and in the classroom!
