Shown here is the Variant binding edition, which is the same as in the Deluxe edition set.
This original short story was written exclusively for Arion by Atwood and is paired with the 19th-century classic poem, “Morte d’Arthur”, by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. The book represents a dialogue between two revered writers and a visual artist divided by centuries— bringing icons old and new into contemporary conversation in a rare letterpress print.
Book artist and bestselling author Audrey Niffenegger— whose style has been compared with that of Aubrey Beardsley— contributes three spot illustrations to the book and a four-panel, two-color landscape image. The 21-inch “funeral procession” of characters inspired by Atwood and Tennyson folds out, linking the two texts in the book both thematically and physically. The Deluxe and Variant editions shown are hand-sewn in a modified dos-à-dos binding structure and presented in a velvety-lined maroon box reminiscent of a sepulcher.
The total edition is limited to 250 copies for sale: 190 Limited edition copies ($850 retail), 45 Variant copies ($1,500 retail), and 15 Deluxe copies ($2,500 retail). The presentation is playful and elaborate, inspired by the exuberant typography and avant-garde book arts of early 20th-century Russia. Artist William Kentridge provided 16 altered and collaged images for the book, composed on tear sheets of the 19th-century tabloid The Illustrated London News, which have been reproduced in full-color offset lithography on tinted backgrounds.
The 116-page book is an oblong format, 9-⅛ x 10-¾ inches, and is printed by letterpress on mouldmade 160 gsm Magnani “BFK Rives”. Monotype Gloucester metal types used to print the edition were cast on site for the project in the M&H Type foundry. Cheltenham and various selections from the press’ historic type collection were composed by hand for display text.
All copies of The Nose are signed by Kentridge and presented in foam-lined clamshell boxes which open to reveal the embedded book and flipbook companion volume "His Majesty Comrade Nose”. The flipbook depicts Kentridge in the guise of the socially climbing Nose, ascending a ladder and tumbling down in pieces… over and again.
This video demonstrates the Deluxe option. (Variant Edition does not include the photogravure.) The Limited option differs as follows: clamshell spine of deep yellow book cloth with maroon stamping, paper book cover printed with grey cork pinboard motif, and spine of maroon book cloth.
Deluxe edition of 40 numbered copies. Variant edition of 20 numbered copies – Sold out. Limited edition of 190 numbered copies.
