How to Knit: Circular Speed Swatching | Brooklyn Tweed Brooklyn Tweed 2025-07-15 | Knitting a gauge swatch is a crucial step in making knits that fit!Knitting in the round can produce a different gauge than knitting flat, so making your swatch the same way you'll be knitting your project is especially important. Our favorite swatching trick for circular knits is "speed swatching", which allows you to accurately measure your gauge without casting on a large number of stitches.STEPS: Using a circular needle, cast on the number of stitches needed for your swatch. Work the first row of your swatch, then slide the live stitches back to the rightmost tip of the needle. (Do not turn your work or join to knit in the round.)Leaving a long float, bring your yarn loosely across the back to knit the next row of stitches.Repeat, sliding your stitches and bringing your yarn across the back for the desired number of rounds. (Note that you are working all rounds from the right side, just as you will be when knitting your project in the round.)If you’re swatching stranded fabric with two colors, knit the first and last two stitches of every round with both colors held together. This will lock each of your colors securely at either end of your swatch. (Your gauge will not be affected by these doubled edge stitches.)Tidy up the edge stitches every few rounds, as they can be a bit loose. When you’ve worked the necessary number of rounds in your swatch, bind off loosely. How to Knit: Binding Off Over Cabled Fabrics | Brooklyn Tweed Brooklyn Tweed 2025-04-08 | When binding off a cabled project, your bound off edge may look wavy and flare out – this happens because the stitches are compressed within the cables, but expand at the edge of the fabric, making it wider than the rest of your work.The Binding Off Over Cabled Fabrics technique is very helpful in keeping the bound off edges of heavily cabled fabrics from becoming wavy or flared. This technique has you reduce your total stitch count at the same time as you're binding off, for a smoother, more uniform edge.If your cables cover the whole width of the piece, work this technique over your entire bind off. Removable markers can be helpful if your cables cover only a portion of your fabric, or when working a sloped bind off over cables. STEPS:To prevent edge flaring when binding off over cabling, bind off by working 2 stitches together out of every 4 stitches (or as indicated in your pattern).1:06 If needed, place a removable marker after the last stitch of the cabled section that is to be bound off, so that you do not lose count while decreasing and binding off at the same time. How to Knit: Waste Yarn Tubular Cast On | Brooklyn Tweed Brooklyn Tweed 2025-03-05 | This cast on method creates a stretchy, rounded edge that flows beautifully into 1x1 or 2x2 ribbing – a great addition to your knitting toolbox! Our pattern experience manager Mary shows you how. This tubular cast on method can be used for either 1x1 or 2x2 ribbing — for 2x2 ribbing, you'll rearrange your stitches after the initial steps. To keep your edges from flaring, work this technique on a needle 1-2 sizes smaller than your ribbing needle.The main steps for this method are:An initial cast on of about half of your stitches using waste yarn (which will later be removed).A foundation row and an increase row using your working yarn.Tubular rows to reinforce the edge and make it clean, stretchy, and rounded. STEPSSet UpUsing waste yarn and your preferred cast on method, cast on with a relaxed tension the number of stitches directed for your project. Do not join.Tip: For this Tubular Cast On method, you begin with approximately half of your required number of cast on stitches, and then increase until you have your required number. How To: Whipstitch Tacking | Brooklyn Tweed Brooklyn Tweed 2024-12-02 | Whipstitch Tacking is a method of creating a faced edge, like a doubled neckband, by sewing each of the live stitches to the inside of the fabric rather than binding them off, which keeps the edge stretchy and flexible. 0:31 Setup:Work your edging to twice the finished length that you want(or as instructed in the pattern you’re working from). Break your working yarn, leaving a tail at least 3 times the length of the edge to be tacked. Fold the live stitches on your needle to the wrong side of the piece so that the needle lines up with the pick-up row (or the base row of the edge to which you’d like to attach the stitches), creating two layers. Thread the yarn tail onto a tapestry needle. 1:33 Steps: Insert your tapestry needle into the first stitch on your needle purlwise and slip it from the needle. Then bring the tapestry needle through the base row taking a small stitch, and pull the yarn through. Repeat these two steps across, matching your stitches to the ones in the base row as much as possible, until no live stitches remain. How to Knit: Dip Stitch | Brooklyn Tweed Brooklyn Tweed 2024-11-05 | Learn to knit the dip stitch! This simple technique creates an elongated V on the right side of the fabric as well as a sort of eyelet effect at the base of each V. This stitch can create some interesting patterns when worked in multiple colors, as in Jared Flood’s Kitelines hat pattern, which uses dip stitches that are offset on each round to create a lattice motif.0:47 To form the dip stitch, work until the place you want the V to sit, then insert your right needle from front to back in between the stitch just worked and the next one, under the top two strands of yarn between the needles. Then wrap the working yarn around your needle and pull up a loop as if to knit, and place that loop on your right needle. 2:59 Each dipped stitch will increase your stitch count by one, so you’ll eventually need to resolve this to avoid changing the width of the fabric. First, work one row in stockinette stitch, slipping all your dipped stitches purlwise with the yarn to the wrong side. 4:09 If working in two colors, switch colors and work to one stitch before the first dipped stitch. Slip the next 2 stitches together as if to knit, then transfer what is now the first stitch on the right needle back to the left needle and knit 2.Then use your left needle to pass the third stitch on the right needle (the dipped stitch) over the 2 stitches just knit and off the right needle. This places the dip stitch on the front of the fabric as the V that you see, centered over the two stitches from between which it was pulled. How To Knit: Box Pleats | Brooklyn Tweed Brooklyn Tweed 2024-10-08 | Box pleating is a deceptively simple technique that allows you to create dimension and shape your fabric by folding it in on itself in a symmetrical pleat, joining the layers of the folds into one.Steps: Setup: 0:42Determine the stitches that will form the pleat. The pleat must be worked over a multiple of 6 stitches. For best results, mark off the pleat stitches using stitch markers. Divide your pleat stitches by six - here, we’ll use N to mean ⅙ of your pleat stitches.First Half: 1:19On the row or round where you will join your pleat, work up to the first pleat marker and remove it, slip the next N stitches on your left working needle to one DPN, [slip following N stitches on your left needle to a separate DPN] two times, rotate second DPN 180 degrees so that it lies behind the first DPN with the wrong sides together, and in front of the third DPN with right sides together. [With the right working needle, enter into 1 stitch from each of three DPNs and k3tog] N times. How To: Colorwork in Double Knitting | Brooklyn Tweed Brooklyn Tweed 2024-09-17 | Double knitting is a unique technique that allows you to create a reversible, double-layered piece of fabric. When you work colorwork using this technique, it creates a color-reversed version of the same image on both sides. Double knitting is a great way to work colorwork patterns that have large stretches of one color since it does not involve floats. When working colorwork, two-color double knitting stitches can be treated in pairs - one stitch on the front layer knit in one color, and the corresponding stitch on the back layer purled in the other. When working from a chart for double knit colorwork, each square represents one of those pairs of stitches. How to double knit in two colors:The basics of working double stockinette consist of knitting the first stitch of each pair with both of your yarns in the back, bringing the yarns to the front of the work, purling the second stitch of the pair, then bringing the yarns to the back. Keeping the unused yarn to the opposite side of the work from the stitch being worked creates a double-sided stockinette fabric. Hold both of your yarns in one hand so that the color you’re working knit stitches with is toward the front, and the color you’re purling with is toward the back, so the color you need is closest to the needles in position to use. Since there are no floats in double knitting, color dominance is not a factor in terms of how you hold your yarns, so tension them the way that is comfortable for you.Using a chart: Even though this fabric is reversible, there will still be an established “right side” to keep things straight. On the right side the charted stitches represent the color you'll use to knit (Color 1). You'll purl the second stitch in each pair with your second color (Color 2). Knit the first stitch on the left needle in Color 1, bring your yarns to the front, purl the second stitch in Color 2, then bring both yarns back to the back. Repeat until you reach a stitch that’s charted in Color 2. When you reach a color change, you'll need to switch the orientation of the yarns so that Color 2 is toward the front and Color 1 is toward the back. Knit the next stitch in Color 2, bring both yarns to the back, purl the following stitch in Color 1, and bring both yarns to the back. Work all the Color 2 stitches on the chart this way, then when you get to more Color 1 stitches, switch the orientation of the yarns back to knit in Color 1 and purl in Color 2. Tracking your work:Visualize the shape you're making and follow how the outline of that shape is changing on the chart as you go. You can also add grid lines to the chart in regular intervals, like every 5 stitches, if your chart doesn’t already have them to make it easier to track your work.Tips for working flat or in the round:Double knit colorwork can be worked flat or in the round. If working flat, twist your yarns together at the beginning or end of each row to keep the layers together, and switch which colors you’re knitting and purling with based on the chart on every other row to keep the design consistent as a reverse image. For example, on even-numbered chart rows, read the charted stitches in Color 1 as knitting in Color 2 and purling in Color 1, and vice versa, reading the chart from left to right. This technique sews two sets of live stitches together to join two pieces of knitting without a visible seam. In this tutorial, we show you how to graft stockinette stitch, garter stitch, and ribbing or other textured stitches in a few simple steps.1:43 Grafting in Stockinette StitchPieces to be joined are live on needles, with wrong sides together and needle tips pointing to the right. Use a length of yarn approximately four times the length of the finished seam.
