how I vlog about coffee + feeling more comfortable on camera BLK CITY COFFEE ROASTERS 2023-09-29 | In this video...Answering a question for Jord. I hope it helps! here's my notes for this vlog: (I literally copied and pasted it here.) How and why I got on camera. -it’s good to motivate yourself why you’re doing this non-natural thing. What I did to get comfortable. Off the cuff I have a topic in mind and have confidence I can riff. I don’t worry too much about how I sound, because I can edit it.If I really feel I don’t like it. I hit stop andHit record again and start again. This happens when I haven’t made a video in a while. But sometimes, even if I don’t like what I just said, I keep talking, say it again and do another take. And make a mental notes to edit that out. ALot of time you’ll make better decisions in post. Or at the editing table. When you’re not a pro, allow yourself to find your voice. The only way you do that is practice and allowing yourself to fail forward. Also it’s helpful to mentally let go of perfection when you’re starting out. Be forgiving. If you have the perspective that this your perspective and you’re sharing your experience, you’re never wrong. Only making observations. Scripting vs. off the cuff vs. bullet points may all be helpful at some point. Scripting is usually when you’re spouting facts, things you don’t want to mis inform on. Bullet points guide you when you’re ok to take those points into your dialouge. Whenever people ask me questions and I want to answer them as best as I can in the moment, I’ll bullet my thoughts to help me cover everything I was thinking of. I’ll also try to add that it’s my opinion, my anedoctal experience, etc. I always encourage my audience to learn how to fish vs just giving them the fish. This keeps me honest and out of any one camp.Scripting should still sound like you if possible. I rant as much as the next person. But I do listen back to everything to help filter it as much possible before it starts to sound too annoying. I do try to get to the point, while still being me and exploring my own process with everything. Take pauses. Say the thing you want to say and take a pause. Take your time. Different kinds of videos will lend itself to corresponding style. Like these on the desktop videos have a little different vibe than me standing infant of the camera in the lab. I’m not saying to follow me. But I will say to be conscious of it when you make videos so that you can take advantage of what works. It’s all a self-reflective process that opens alot of doors in the realm of self awareness. Practical tips: 1. If the camera is daunting. Put it far away, but then zoom in to frame your shot up correctly. 2. You can do voice overs. 3. Imagine talking to a friend. 4. Not too many people are watching in the beginning, so just be chill. 5. Nowadays a forced happy demeanor is cringe. unless that’s how you really are. but that’s easier said than done. You will develop an on-camera persona; just try to keep it 100. 6. I try to not focus too much on myself. I always try to make it about the coffee. And I am just a guide and host. If I fail, at least I’m trying.
