Their ancestors were trained in the Mughal court in the 16th century by Tansen. When the family moved to Darbhanga, a small village nestled between the Nepal and Indian border in the 19th century, the area was going through a severe drought. It is believed that the ancestors of the Mallicks sang the rain-invoking raga Megh and ushered in a downpour in the region, thereby relieving its people of the ordeal. This pleased the king immensely who rewarded them with acres of land in Darbhanga where the family still resides. The synchronisation of tonal phrases between the two singers assumes the movements of two flitting butterflies allowing each other to take the lead when required and at the same time, traversing a familiar path in their own beautiful way. Raag Jaunpuri is said to be a creation of King Hussain Shah of the Sharqi dynasty, the Islamic state that ruled northern India between 1394 and 1479. Their capital was Jaunpur, a city that still exists by the same name in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh in India. Hussain Shah had christened the raga Jaunpuri-Asavari which later got simplified as Jaunpuri. Raag Jaunpuri is derived from the Asavari thaat (scale). It drops Ga (3rd note) in its ascent and is sung during the 2nd quarter of the day (between 9 am and 12 pm). The dominant and sub-dominant notes in this raga are the ‘en-dehors’ of Jaunpuri, highlighted by oscillations to hit a lower-than-usual microtone. This enhances the grandeur and devotional mood of Raag Jaunpuri while subtly maintaining its restive stance. If personified, Jaunpuri may look like a striking lady with a calm, deferential demeanour. His learning started in the family, a varied group of Maihar gharana musicians. His grandfather played the esraj, his uncle trained under sarod great Ali Akbar Khan, and his father was a sitarist who received instruction from Ravi Shankar. But his training was atypical in some ways - his family never pressured him to take up classical music, letting him play through film songs to acquaint himself with the techniques. However he soon realised his calling, and worked hard to capture the nuances of his idols - Vilayat Khan, Nikhil Banerjee, and Ravi Shankar. Kushal uses a first-hand understanding of vocal music to expand the mellifluous phrasings of his string playing, bending patiently around both his instruments in a gharana-blending style. The lyrics of this abhang are in Marathi, the language of the state of Maharashtra and the composer is Saint Soyarabai, a female ascetic from the 14th century.Saint Soyarabai was a spiritual leader who emerged during the theist ‘Bhakti Movement’ in India. During those times, India was heavily dominated by caste discrimination and a society that believed that all privileges belonged to those who were born in the ‘upper’ caste. This gave rise to the ‘Bhakti Movement’, a spiritual revolution centred around love and oneness with God and encompassed people from all walks of life. The movement continued for at least 4 centuries and had led to the emergence of different branches and sects of the Hindu religion and the birth of Sikhism.In the lyrics of this abhang, the devotee seeks the mercy and forgiveness of Lord Vishnu, the god of preservation in the Hindu pantheon. She prays for forgiveness of those who had inflicted sufferings upon people from the lower castes and exults that we are all children of god and hence all differences dissolve in His heart.This uplifting piece is the grand finale from Arati Ankalikar’s performance at the Darbar Festival 2011. Abhang is one of Ankalikar’s strongest suites, her mother-tongue being Marathi. In 2007, within a single year, Darbar had already emerged and established itself as the biggest south-east Asian music festival outside of India. Representing deserving and highly talented artists based in the UK thus became a greater responsibility and onus and Singh was one of the obvious choices.More about the artists and music:Harjinderpal Matharu is a quiet in nature but a very well-spoken musician brimming with infectious confidence on stage. His chiselled projection and detailing of a raga are pregnant with melodic sensitivity. He stands out as one of the finest disciples of Pandit Sharma, apart from being the senior-most too.Raag Bhoopal Todi is a derivative of the Bhairavi family. However, its distinctive Todi-like characteristics especially in the upper octave gives it the suffix of Todi. It is akin to the Carnatic raga Bhoopalam and uses komal Re, Ga and Dha. It omits Ma from the scale and has an ascent and descent like the Hindustani raga Bhopali with the exception that Re, Ga and Dha are all komal. Interestingly, the scale has been named ‘Bhoopal Todi’.Shahbaz Hussain strikes a fine balance with captivating improvisations and a nuanced accompaniment. Wajahat Khan & Shahbaz Hussain – 2021 Curve #shorts darbarfestival 2022-10-02 | Ustad Wajahat Khan performs Raag Chandani Kedar in this video with his khayal singing style composition. Shahbaz Hussain accompanies him on the tabla, enhancing the recital with nuanced playing and interlinking subtle and indulgent energies with the sarod’s romantic and intricate melodic movements. Renowned sarod master, Khan hails from the illustrious Etawah gharana - his family goes back through a line of celebrated musicians to the courts of 16th century India (including Ustad Imdad Khan who in 1902 became the first recorded instrumental soloist. He started his career as a child prodigy vocalist and went on to become the first sarod player of his dynasty. He is also a distinguished composer and educationalist, having performed worldwide with wide-ranging contributions to the styles and repertoires of the sarod.
