Nighttime seal rescue Zoos Victoria 2023-05-15 | Melbourne Zoo’s Marine Response Unit has made a daring rescue in the dark to free a young Australian fur seal tangled in fishing net savagely cutting into its neck. Portarlington locals helped the Marine Response Unit track the seal, which disappeared during the day but regularly returned to a popular fishing spot at night. After several long nights the seal was successfully netted and closer inspection revealed a nasty two centimetre-deep wound made by the piece of fishing net wrapped around the seal’s neck. The Marine Response Unit team was able to cut the seal free of the netting and watch it head back into the water. Lord Howe Island Stick Insect Conservation Breeding Program turns 20 Zoos Victoria 2023-02-14 | Once considered extinct, the Lord Howe Island Stick Insect was rediscovered in 2001 on Ball's Pyramid, a volcanic outcrop just off the coast of Lord Howe Island. A single pair of Lord Howe Island Stick Insects were brought to Melbourne Zoo in 2003 to try to start a Conservation Breeding Program.
