smeezekitty*Thanks for 90K(!) views / 6000 likes* | Portal ending credits on vintage machine
I saw that the Portal ending credits were designed to look like an old amber monochrome monitor. I had a amber (orange) phosphor MDA/HGC monitor sitting not far from me so my first thought was "I have to reproduce this on the real mono monitor"
I have an old 1986 Paradise Autoswitch EGA2 card that supports monochrome monitors and 80x43 mode so I plugged it into my 486 box and fired up Turbo C++
Luckily everything just fit in the 80x43
It took a lot of time and trial and error to get the timing even close to right. I know it is still a little off in parts. To make things worse, I have had constant hardlocks due to bugs in the soundblaster code (which I didn't write since I don't know anything of sound programming)
After lots of tweaks I finally got it working reasonably well. I don't have a decent camera so apologizes for the video quality
The whole thing is driven by a 486DX-120 with 64 MB of RAM and DOS 6
I did loosely get inspired by 256byteram's 8080 run but with some major differences. For one thing this plays the real sampled audio track through the soundblaster card. (Everything you hear is coming through the vintage system's speakers) Also the display format closely matches the original including the credits. I don't think I saw any other reproduction on youtube that shows the credits as well

It is being driven with a 3Hz square wave. The circuit is based on the test circuit described in the manual with the switch being replaced by a transistor. Each indicator is a neon light and it advances the count every pulse from the function generator and resets to 0. It also produces a "staircase" analog signal which can be seen on the scope.HAARP 32-line NBTV reception October 25, 2022 (manual sync)smeezekitty2022-10-30 | This 32-line NBTV was received from a HAARP test transmission on October 25th, 2022 at abot 16:35:55 UTC. Like Simcity 3000, it is quite slow. But unlike Simcity 3000, this one was actually quite hard to get working. I had to use Ghirdra to disassemble the executable and patch out the Pentium CPU checks and the usage of rdtsc.
The sound doesn't work for some reason but I am guessing it may have something to do with the lack of rdtsc. Otherwise it is slow but more playable than I expected.

I created a 3x5 pixel font yielding a total console size of 32x10 Unfortunately it is a slow since the code is an inefficient hack and it has to constantly poll the PS/2 keyboard and serial port to prevent dropping data due to a buffer overrun. The LCD is connected to the TX of the hardware serial port. The hardware RX is connected to the serial out of the Linux 86duino and a software serial TX satisfies the keyboard input of the 86duino
It supports cursor positioning functions, underlined, blinking and inverted text and partial scrolling functionality.
The LCD is a Sparkfun 128x64 KS0108 with serial backpack.
Typing with one hand holding the camera is DIFFICULT!
The whole thing is connected to an 86duino running Debian Squeeze
