I need an impractical way to hold my sharpies! byte sized engineering 2023-06-23 | A few months ago I came up with an idea to build a lightsaber hilt that could store and display my sharpie pens. Star Wars Scomp Link USB Port byte sized engineering 2023-05-08 | There's a really cool thing in Star Wars called a scomp link. It's basically a computer terminal built for droids so that they can access data. I thought it would be really cool to build one of these scomp links and even make the center rotate like it does in the movies. I have to try 1 Million combinations? Safe Cracking Robot - Part 2 byte sized engineering 2023-02-06 | My brother-in-law forgot the combination to his safe, so he asked me to build him a robotic safe cracking device. These safe combinations usually have 3 numbers with 100 possible numbers to choose from. That means that there are 1 Million total possible combinations that I'll have to try! Even if I could test 1 combination per second it would still take 11.57 days to try all combinations! All That Work Just For This? - CO2 Laser Cutter Part 5 byte sized engineering 2022-07-22 | The video series continues where I'm building my own DIY CO2 laser cutter. I started out by replacing the V wheel assemblies with some more substantial linear rail. Then I installed some drag chain and routing the wires and air assist tube. With that done I started wiring up all the motor drivers and laser controller. With everything wired up I installed the mirror mounts and lens and spent quite a bit of time aligning everything. Deciding What Size To Build This Thing - CO2 Laser Cutter Part 2 byte sized engineering 2022-03-01 | In part 2 of this DIY CO2 laser cutter video series I tackle building a frame. As I considered what material to use for this project I relied on my engineering experience and chose aluminum extrusion. This material is like an erector set for engineers, it's very modular and easy to use. I assembled the frame according to my model. I used a special internal 90 degree bracket to make it easier to put the enclosure panels in when it comes time to do so. I also designed and printed some V wheel plates for a temporary mock up of the laser head gantry. Finally with the laser tube mounted I test fired the tube again. How To Make A Lithium Battery Pack With 18650 Cells | Practical Skills For Makers byte sized engineering 2021-12-18 | In this video I show you how to make your own custom lithium battery pack using the common 18650 lithium cell. I talk about how to connect the cells in series to get the desired voltage you need, and how to connect the cells in parallel to increase the capacity of the battery pack. Then I go over how to arrange them in the plastic spacers, and how to use nickel strip to spot weld the cells together. Finally I talk about using a battery management system (BMS) to add protection and properly balance the cells as you charge them. I wrap the whole battery in a protective insulating layer and shrink wrap.
