Avalanche Studios GroupWith only a week to go until the release of Mad Max, we wanted to share one of our favorite experiences from this journey.
Most game developers never get to touch anything they create. Their work is forever locked behind glass screens. So when the centerpiece of the upcoming Mad Max game – a unique car called the Magnum Opus – would be re-created in real life, it was an overwhelming experience for the team at Avalanche Studios.
In this short documentary, we get to follow Lead Artist Daniel Persson, the original designer of the Magnum Opus, and Odd Ahlgren, Director of Narrative Content, as they witness their work come to life. Odd even travels to Wasteland Weekend, the celebration of all things post-apocalyptic, to realize a life-long dream.
Mad Max is out on Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC on September 1, 2015. See brand new screenshots and trailers at www.madmaxgame.com. To learn more about Avalanche Studios, visit www.avalanchestudios.com.

His secret? The humble grapple hook. He swears it keeps you young and fit enough to overthrow any dictator. And, let’s face it, they’re worth it. 💁
From an annoying bug and enormous hurdle for our designers to the core gameplay feature we know today – the grapple hook caused its fair share of strife. But over time, it more than made up for it with the immense amounts of fun it provided. The ability to explore freely, commandeer any and all vehicles, and (let’s be honest) taking out NPCs in increasingly bizarre ways.
We’re raising a glass to the humble grapple hook in celebration of Rico's birthday. Let’s hope it isn’t snatched away in the process by some unruly go-getter with a metal claw on a string. Here’s to grappling! 🥂

We celebrated our 20th anniversary by inviting ALL Avalanchers from ALL over the world to several days of intense plotting, planning, and partying in the wilderness.
To fit close to 500 Avalanchers from New York, Liverpool, Stockholm, and Malmö (Montreal had not yet joined the party) in a single spot, we took over an entire ski resort and turned it into an outlandish Avalanche-themed festival. There were fiery dance moves, buzzing guitar duels, custom anniversary beer, birthday greetings from industry greats, neon unicorns, and yes – actual explosions💥*
Having all that talent and experience gathered, we made the most of our time: looking back at two decades of open-world mayhem, planning ahead for the next, and reaching the top of a big-ass mountain together.
This compilation features select snippets of the time we spent in Hundfjället. We can’t show you the top-secret workshopping, but rest assured you’ll feel the results in our creative output in the years ahead. Instead, here are two days of Avaland Summit after-hours compressed to a glorious minute of madness.
* Done safely and with adult(ish) supervision. Do not attempt Avalanche-levels of partying at home. Your landlord and local fire department will not approve. ________

It’s already been two decades since Avalanche Studios was founded back in 2003. Much like Rico Rodriguez on a death-defying dictator removal mission, a small strike team of developers dove head-first into Just Cause. The initial spark of an idea was to empower players to land on a moving car, but the team would eventually achieve so much more – like redefining open-world vastness, player agency, and emergent gameplay.
But the chaos isn’t confined to Just Cause. Avalanchers have applied polygon pyrotechnics to the dystopian wastelands of Mad Max and Rage 2, the top-down carnage of Renegade Ops, and our self-published Generation Zero, and upcoming open-world roguelite Ravenbound. We’ve also become avid hunters and anglers, thanks to the best-in-class outdoor experiences of theHunter: Call of the Wild and Call of the Wild: The Angler.
All of these games and services are made possible by our proprietary tech, the Apex engine. Two decades in the making, it enables breathtaking vistas, vast and dynamic open worlds, and endless creative possibilities.
It’s been a wild ride, but we have no intention of slowing down. We’re currently hard at work on the co-op smuggler’s paradise Contraband in partnership with Xbox Game Studios. And behind the scenes, our creative divisions Avalanche Studios, Expansive Worlds, and Systemic Reaction are cooking up even more epicness.

Learn more at avalanchestudios.com/careersThis is Avalanche StudiosAvalanche Studios Group2016-04-13 | In late 2015, after more than a decade in our old digs, Avalanche Studios moved houses. We didn’t go far, only about two blocks within the Södermalm area of Stockholm, but it was a big move nevertheless. Almost everyone of our 150 Stockholm-based developers had expressed their hopes, needs and wants for the new studio. The Operations team listened, budgeted and planned it all out.
As part of the move, electricity capacity was increased and cooling improved, as our landlord used to inform us that we “generated heat like we were running a small power plant in their building”.
Seats were outfitted with ample outlets, adjustable height tables and individual lights at the right temperatures to make sure everyone, from artists to programmers, were happy and able to do their best work.
Meeting rooms of all types and sizes were planned alongside work stations for a truly dynamic atmosphere, conducive to our agile workflow.
Lastly, the entire place was designed from the ground up to look and feel like it actually housed Avalanche Studios, creators of huge, explosive open worlds.
The move took place over a weekend and since then, we’ve been happily working out of Västgötagatan 5. We’re so happy to be here in fact, that we wanted to share the atmosphere with the outside world. To that end, we’ve put together a short video to give you a feel for what it can be like working at Avalanche Studios in Stockholm.
In the near future, we’ll let you peek into our New York studio, based in the heart of Soho. Developers there have enjoyed a truly unique environment since the studio opened in 2011. Just Cause 3 was in fact made in New York, right on Broadway, just above the one of the busiest streets in the city.
If you want to learn what it’s like developing games in New York City, keep an eye out for that. In the meantime, here’s a quick look at our brand new Stockholm studio.

The rich and uniquely diverse environment offered us a closer look at dense vegetation, beautiful skies and flowing water, among other things.
When Andreas, Natalie and Max came back, they brought with them some amazing footage that we wanted to share with you. So we cut together this 5 minute video.
Just Cause 2 is used as an illustration throughout this video, but the reference material collected will prove useful in many of our upcoming open world games. In fact, some of the skies that we captured in Costa Rica will make it into Mad Max, which is currently in development at Avalanche Studios in Stockholm.
While in Costa Rica, we wanted to give back to the environment which has been so closely tied to our success for the past 10 years. If you want to learn more about Leslie and her tireless work for the nonprofit organization called the Toucan Rescue Ranch, go to http://www.toucanrescueranch.org.
Hope you like the video!
