I finally made time this year to make a few steam bent wooden carriers. Some green hickory was used from our pond where ive always got staves stored. This wood was split and shaved then steamed and bent into a simple form to dry a few days. Round tenons and a few dry pegs keep it all together. Raising day from our May 2022 Timber Frame Class Mr. Chickadee 2022-07-15 | Some shots of our last Timber Frame class here on the homestead this May. It was an awesome experience with a bunch a motivated individuals. Much of the week we were plagued with rain and winds, but everyone stuck it out and we got the frame finished and up! This frame is a Japanese style timberframe pavilion. Its purpose is to replace the canvas tents we have been using for classes, they work ok for sun, not so much wind driven rain or snow. The frame is 18' square with 6' of overhang on the eve walls. Gable walls will have roll out awnings which can extend the sheltered footprint when needed. Most of the frame is eastern white pine, the three large curved timbers are virginia pine. Special thanks to Matt for the great drone shots. These things are massive, weighing around 1Ton each, and needed to be broken up before being movable. Making a saw buck and cutting firewood with hand tools Mr. Chickadee 2021-12-26 | Tis the season for firewood! When cutting firewood with hand tools, we have come to prefer smaller trees from where the forest needs thinning and a small frame saw. The comparative effort and work load is so much more enjoyable than cutting many time through a large log with a larger crosscut saw, then needing to split each round into many smaller pieces. These small trees cut up super fast and easy, are light and simple to transport and stack up for drying, just many advantages. For tree sections up to 10 inches or so, a frame saw will be much faster and easier to use than a larger crosscut saw, in our experience. We normally burn wood to heat and cook in russian style masonry heaters, so the short and slim pieces are ideal. Hand made double insulated wooden casement windows for our timber frame. Mr. Chickadee 2021-09-22 | We prefer to make our own double insulated windows over the modern type for many reasons. The concept of an insulated air space between sheets of glass is the same, except rather than a tiny space filled with argon gass, we have two seperate windows with a larger air gap between them. This is a traditional Swedish design and has been tested to hold similar R values to modern windows by the Swedes. Oh, and at a fraction of the cost, they are also easily repairable should there be the need, unlike modern gasketed windows. Japanese timber frame home extension: Enclosing the frame using larsen trusses and hand tools. Mr. Chickadee 2021-04-04 | Moving forward with the home extension, we added a subfloor of green pine 1.5" thick. This gave us support all around the frame to rest our Larsen trusses. These trusses are used to enclose the frame with insulation and siding while giving a useful space for things like extra insulation and utilities. On the outside of the trusses a layer of Mineral wool board insulation gives us a thermal break and can also be used as the first line against drafts. Outside this 2x2 vertical pieces are attached for a vent space, then a 1x4 layer horizontally to attach the wooden siding against. There are many ways to do this, this is one. This frame is mostly white pine, these posts are 4x4 and these joining beams are 4x8. They are joined using a spline joint, which uses a long piece of dry ash to connect both beams together at the post tightly. Japanese Timberframe Part I Stones and Sills Mr. Chickadee 2020-10-22 | We are excited to share this new project, which is an extension of our house using Japanese style joinery. The frame is 12x22 with a 6' cantilevered porch/balcony. Granite boulders were purchased from a Lexington KY landscaping supplier. The base frame has 6 stones, with 12 or 8 foot spans between them depending on direction. This sill timber matrix has 5x5 posts of virginia pine, and 5x9 sill beams of white pine. All wood has been dried about 2 years now. The site has a drop of about 6 feet overall. Building a Hobbit style root cellar Part IV Mr. Chickadee 2020-09-26 | Stone vaulted in ground root cellars can be water proofed in many ways, and traditional practices abound from all over the world, depending on local custom and readily found materials. After long search, I found an older gentleman whose father helped in the construction of such a barrel vault, though for a horse drawn fire engine, not far from here. After our talk I decided on this already proven technique here in our local area with our local soils and stones. Obviously those living in a differing climate or with differing soils may need a different path. Just a few quick touches on the root cellar. Clay subsoil was piled up and compacted creating a mini hill. Before that, a small and simple sandstone chimney was built to service the roof vent shaft. Reclaimed log cabin chimney stones were repurposed in a fitting tribute to the Appalachian style of "on edge" chimney construction, not seen anywhere else (that I am aware of). Wet clay was molded and formed into a simple retaining wall near the front edge of the roof to help hold some soil in place. Once well wet and tamped, this clay becomes like concrete, and when sloped correctly sheds water very well, much the same way as traditional New England homes used a clay drainage apron around the home. Building a Hobbit style root cellar with stone Part I Mr. Chickadee 2020-06-21 | In this episode we begin our Hobbit root cellar by splitting and laying sandstone blocks for the walls. Following a traditional approach seen in several 100+ year old cellars, we stack most of the stones using the natural clay subsoil as a kind of "mortar". The front wall is laid up using lime mortar as it will see the most weathering. The round door frame is cut out of 3 1/2" thick heart pine timbers, using a felloes saw. These felloes are joined with a walnut dovetail key, then split white oak saplings, about 2", are steamed and bent to form the door jamb inside the frame. Scything tall grass in an orchard Mr. Chickadee 2020-05-30 | Finally time to put the new rake and fork to good use on the first hay cut for this year. Just a cool, cloudy day scything our orchard, and using the cut fresh grass to mulch the trees there. American pattern scythe used, older Seymour brush snath slimmed down for grass use, coupled with a 30" "western" type grass blade with no lift to the tang angle. This is my preferred rig for tall rough occasional mowing. For now, a bit over 1 acre in this orchard, cut in 2 1/2 hours at a slow relaxed pace, taking time to mulch trees. The handle is dry quarter sawn ash, the head green riven hickory and the teeth are dry riven hickory. This rake is my take on the old Swedish rakes from years ago. The green head will ensure tightness as it shrinks on the dry teeth and handle tenon. Last tooth also acts as a draw bored tenon keeping everything together. Installing a large treadle powered grindstone Mr. Chickadee 2020-02-16 | In which we take an old sandstone grinding wheel and put it to work in our smithy using custom made lignum vitae bearing and a simple frame mounted to the timber frame. Having used the stone in the natural with a water bath, we found it very slow at removing material, as most natural stone wheels are. To make it more practical for us we attached some 60grit sandpaper to the wheel and now it removes material at a great speed. Hand Carving a Stone Anvil Base Mr. Chickadee 2020-01-11 | Hand carving a stone anvil base with Mr Chickadee. Upon the advice from master blacksmith Joshua Greenwood we decided to carve a base for our anvil from a solid stone block. The stone was split first using a cape chisel and wedges we custom forged for this type work. The block was rough shaped using a stone hammer/axe and finish faced with a quarry pick. A variety of hand chisels were used to carve and smooth the top to accept the anvil in a solid and stable plane. Master blacksmith Greenwood had the idea to use a drift pin from the stone up into the square handling hole in the anvil base, which worked very well! Mr Greenwood also sourced our anvil which is a vintage 300lb German Church Windows anvil. This new set up is much more stable than any wood base, making the anvil a mountain of useful, immobile mass. These sandstones were hand split and hewn from the cliffs by some long ago mason and now are given new life in our forge. In this video we show the steps taken to construct a traditional Chinese Style Box Bellows from wood. This ancient style of Bellows uses a wooden carcase and multiple chambers to deliver a nice concentrated air blast to a blacksmith forge. All wood is air dried pine, cut here over the last years. Most is shortleaf pine with a bit of white pine for the piston head. Boards are yellow pine, attached with batten pressure as in the traditional older Amish tradition. Bottoms of the building are burned with a hand torch then oiled with a mix of pine tar and natural drying oils.
