Before his long-time tenure with the New York Mets (1962-2003), Murphy began his MLB career with the Red Sox (1954-1959, alongside Curt Gowdy), then the Baltimore Orioles (1960-1961), before moving to the Mets in 1962. No full games of Murphy broadcasting with either the Red Sox or Orioles have been known to survive, and this remains the only known clip of Murphy doing MLB play-by-play prior to 1962 (play-by-play details below). Broadcast on WHDH radio, Boston (now WEEI), Fenway Park, Thursday, July 9, 1959, and we pick up the action in the bottom of the 3rd inning, 1 out, man on 1st, Red Sox already up 2-0 on the New York Yankees, and Sox CF Marty Keough at bat against Yanks hurler Bob Turley. Audio was posted as found, but is edited; some pitches and one batter are skipped. As Murphy calls it, Keough would pop to short but Yanks SS Gil McDougald would drop the ball to put 2 men on (Don Buddin advancing to 2nd), then Bobby Avila would sock a 3-run HR into the net atop the Green Monster to put Boston up 5-0. Vic Wertz’s AB is skipped (he walked), Jackie Jensen also walked, and then Ted Williams steps in and takes a call strike, but unfortunately the short audio clip ends at that point. The Red Sox would win in a rout, 14-3, but would still remain in last place in the American League (they'd finish 5th in 1959, the Yankees 3rd). Tony Bennett/Dave Brubeck - The White House Sessions, Live 1962 alpineinc1 2013-06-13 | These are the four songs that Bennett and Brubeck played together at the end: Lullaby Of Broadway, Chicago, That Old Black Magic, and There Will Never Be Another You. Both Tony Bennett and Dave Brubeck were asked by the JFK White House to perform at the "White House Seminar American Jazz Concert", for college students who'd been working as interns in the nation's capital, on Tuesday, August 28, 1962. Originally planned for the White House Rose Garden, the enormity of the crowd necessitated the concert being moved to the nearby Sylvan Theater by the Washington Monument. The entire recording was considered lost until unearthed in late 2012 (That Old Black Magic from this set has been previously released). Both had their individual sets, but then combined for an impromptu four final songs together that I've uploaded here. This is the first time they'd played together, and wouldn't do so again until 2009. Eugene Wright on bass and Joe Morello on drums from Brubeck's quartet led support (unfortunately, alto saxophonist Paul Desmond lays out for this set). A fun, rollicking, albeit short set. William B. Williams of WNEW fame is the announcer at the end. Yankees vs Tigers, Navin Field, 9/20/1934 - full radio broadcast (Tyson), second oldest to exist alpineinc1 2012-02-16 | This is the oldest full radio broadcast of a regular season baseball game known to exist (the 1934 All-Star Game is the only surviving full game broadcast that is older than this). Thursday, September 20, 1934, Yankees vs Tigers at Navin Field (Briggs/Tiger Stadium) in Detroit, Ty Tyson is the broadcaster, and also the PA announcer! Great old time radio. Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri, Frank Crosetti in the lineup for the Bombers, and Hank Greenberg, Charlie Gehringer, Mickey Cochrane for the Bengals. Babe Ruth was in the ballpark, but unfortunately did not play due to injury (so the 1934 All-Star Game is the only surviving full game audio of Ruth, as he retired in early 1935). This was during the Tigers' '30's heyday, on their way to the AL pennant.Tyson includes many colorful ad spots along the way, telegraph machines can be heard through much of the broadcast (sending game info to outposts around the country; Art, one of the telegraphers, catches a foul ball at 2:11:14!), and Tyson even doubles as the PA announcer, but only for pitching changes and pinch hitters, which was likely the norm in those days (quick trivia: Tyson was also the PA announcer on May 2, 1939, informing the crowd when Lou Gehrig strode out to home plate at Briggs Stadium to present the lineup card without him in it). Just hearing the game as it slowly unfolded over 80 years ago is a treasure.
