Traditionally starting your own sneaker brand would run tens of thousands of dollars. It required weeks of designing and working with a factory before making a sample. But with artificial intelligence to help you with designing, and print on demand platforms such as Printful, you are now able to design and launch a sneaker collection fast! Best part is the quality is on par with the big name brands.

The signature product strategy is used by multi-billion dollar brands and throughout this video we show how it can be applied to your clothing brand. In order for this strategy to work, you need to have designs, and blanks that will keep your customers coming back. We are pumped to share what we found at AS Colour, and I know you’ll take some value with what Lawrence Railton the Founder of this business had to share. After years of working in the surf and sport industry, Larry decided to launch his own line of products which is now distributed globally through retail and wholesale channels.

This is when he met John Bowman who by no surprise was a leather manufacturer. After they found that they shared the same interests from a stylistic standpoint they used their knowledge of leather to collaborate on their first creative project, a leather jacket. They then expanded their creative endeavors and learned how to make a variety of luxury goods until they decided to establish their own manufacturing company.
Around this time they welcomed a jeweler named Leonard Kamhout to their team. It’s important to note that Leonard specialized in sterling silver. They all began to work together and expand their knowledge in the manufacturing industry until they received a project in 1989 that would shift the course of their business and even their lives.
The project was given to them by a filming company that wanted a few wardrobe pieces they wanted to implement in a low-budget horror film with the working title Chrome Hearts. Hopefully, you can see where this is going but inevitably the film company changed the name before the film's official release and this became the name of the luxury brand we know today, Chrome Hearts. The film not only gave Chrome Hearts its name but also helped it gain attention from the rock community during its start-up phase.
One of the lead actresses from the film was dating a famous rockstar, Steve Jones one of Chrome Heart’s first pieces on stage. As mentioned earlier, Stark and Bowman became friends because they shared an interest in motorcycles, luckily for them motorcycle and rock culture are both well connected and share very similar values allowing them to attract an audience that they understood and could connect with. This is when Chrome Hearts found its place and more rockstars started to wear Chrome Hearts during their performances until it reached peak popularity among rock fans.
Around this time Chrome Hearts would have their next breakthrough as a brand when Stark met his future wife Lori Lynn, an art director who was able to enhance the areas where the brand had previously fallen short in. She helped them develop excellent marketing campaigns and directed professional photoshoots that originated the luxury image Chrome Hearts owns today. She even influenced the popular ready-to-wear side of Chrome Hearts featuring iconic logo hoodies and broadening the brand's audience as a whole.
This is when the brand took a major shift and Richard Stark bought out the shares of his two friends that started the brand with him. This gave Richard Stark complete creative control and allowed him to see out his own vision for the future of the brand. The brand continued to expand on custom jewelry and garments while Stark used his previous experience with leather to delve into furniture and home goods. Lori Lynn continued to expand on the brand’s marketing campaigns even introducing the iconic Chrome Hearts magazine series now considered collector's items.
As Chrome Hearts continued to grow in mainstream fashion Stark and Lori realized they needed to switch up the brand’s image to make the brand an easy digest for the average consumer. This is when Stark took a custom leather jacket to Tommy Perse, the owner of LA-based boutique Maxfield. Tommy loved the jacket and decided to give Chrome Hearts a chance by displaying the brand on shelves. Sure enough, the products were a hit and passed the test for the average consumer in LA.
The brand began to gain recognition among pop culture as a whole as it found its place in mainstream fashion and Tommy even helped Stark open his own retail store in a nearby location. Years later Chrome Hearts had retail locations in many major cities across the globe and they continue to be a popular spot among tourists.
Overall, Chrome Hearts has received a lot of attention for its unreplicable design language and rightfully so considering it holds true to being a luxury brand through product quality, grand feeling photography, and the brand’s ability to remain true to its roots while pleasing its mainstream audience.

A signature product is the product a brand is best known for. The best example of this is Vlone, when you think of Vlone you think of the bright orange V on the back of a t-shirt. The founder, A$AP Bari, executed the signature product strategy very well because he was able to build enough hype around the Vlone logo tee that he was able to release the same t-shirt in many different varients. You can now the same Vlone tee in my different color combinations.
The issue A$AP Bari ended up having was the strategy worked out too well. Eventually, he decided to branch out and design a full luxury collection that would end up being showcased at the 2017 Paris Fashion Week. The collection wasn’t received well among the fashion community and that’s when A$AP Bari realized he was trapped in a box and went back to making more t-shirts.
In order to execute this strategy correctly you need to identify what your signature product is going to be and start brainstorming a simple and easily recognizable design or logo you can put on the product. Then you need to start consistently releasing and marketing your signature product until people start to resonate it your logo with your brand. Then as soon as people catch on, make the switch and start to branch out.
Overall, the signature product strategy is a perfect way to launch and grow your start-up as long as you can execute it well.

Traditionally print on demand was associated with Direct To Garment Printing (DTG) which limited the areas of a garment you could design. As new technology like A.I enters the industry, Direct To Film Printing gives you the ability to make products that more closely resemble your vision. Throughout this video we show you how these printing techniques can elevate your brand and demand premium price points for your clothing brand.
This video is part 2 of our making products using Artificial Intelligence. So if you missed part 1 where we show you how to design with A.I check it out here: youtu.be/3fCSn2JQBuw?si=48X803ETh__nyLcN
