African Wild Dog Enrichment Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance 2024-05-18 | Our African wild dogs recently enjoyed immersive enrichment activities! Volunteers created paper mache replicas of a red river hog and ostrich chick, filled with pig and ostrich meat. Jaya Grooming Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance 2024-05-08 | Step into our Sumatran orangutan world, where grooming sessions turn into delightful family dramas! 🦧💕 Come behind the scenes into our indoor orangutan space to watch as Jaya, one of our males, lavishly tends to Eirina and her precious bundle, Siska. Despite not being Siska's biological father, Jaya's care is evident. Animal Care Specialist Cindy C. recorded this sweet moment and shared, "While grooming isn't common for orangutans, Jaya's mom was big on grooming him when he was little, so he learned that behavior from her. This is a great example of how orangutans learn from each other, and Jaya has since spread the joy of grooming here at Denver Zoo." But Hesty has other plans, craving her share of affection. Welcome Baylor, Our New Asian Elephant 🐘 Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance 2024-05-07 | Please help us give a warm welcome to our newest resident, Baylor the Asian elephant! Fourteen-year-old Baylor arrived from Houston Zoo at the recommendation of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Asian Elephant Species Survival Plan (SSP). This move supports our ongoing efforts to help protect Endangered Asian elephants and supports the natural history of this species. Thanks to our facilities and expertise, we’re able to provide a great home for male elephants, ensuring they live happily and healthily when it’s time for them to leave their maternal herds. Integrating a new elephant into an established herd is no small task, but we’re happy to share that Baylor is settling in well! Our skilled elephant care team is carefully managing his transition, prioritizing his comfort and well-being. Baylor's arrival was also made even more special by a sweet reunion with his younger brother, 10-year-old Duncan, who joined us last year. Duncan has been an incredible addition to our bachelor herd, and we’re excited to see the brotherly support he offers Baylor during this new chapter. According to our friends in Houston, Baylor is a gentle and thoughtful elephant who loves interacting with his care team and enjoys snacking on browse or hay. Our Animal Care Specialists will continue to gradually introduce Baylor to the other members of our bachelor herd including 54-year-old Groucho, 20-year-old Bodhi, 16-year-old Billy and 14-year-old Jake. As he acclimates to his new home, Baylor may have access to behind-the-scenes indoor spaces, or outdoor Toyota Elephant Passage habitats. Ngozi turns 25 today, making her one of the oldest spotted hyenas in AZA-accredited facilities. Lembke Family Preserve Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance 2024-02-08 | With more than a million species in danger of extinction worldwide, many due to devastating habitat loss, zoo-based conservation has become an essential component of long-term species survival. As an Association of Zoos and Aquariums accredited institution, Denver Zoo has long participated in the Species Survival Plan to ensure genetic diversity in wildlife bred under human care. But as an urban campus with a finite 80-acre geographic footprint, the space we can utilize to make a significant impact has been historically limited—until now. Spanning 570 acres in Weld County, Colorado, the Lembke Family Preserve will allow Denver Zoo to profoundly evolve both our animal care and conservation breeding practices. “The Lembke Family Preserve represents the dawn of a new era for Denver Zoo and will dramatically expand our capabilities for our animals and Colorado wildlife as we build it out in the coming years,” said Bert Vescolani, President and CEO of Denver Zoo. “We are deeply grateful to the Lembke family for their generosity and mutual understanding that saving wildlife for future generations requires a dedicated community of donors, members, partners and neighbors.” While the Lembke Family Preserve will not be open to the public, this expansive facility kicks off a transformative year for the Zoo and will serve as a pillar of our future animal care and wildlife conservation efforts. Top Moments of 2023: Matt Dillon Flamingling with Flamingo Friends Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance 2023-12-30 | We’re looking at some of our favorite moments of 2023! Earlier this year, our Animal Care Specialists noticed that Matt Dillon, one of our white-faced whistling ducks, seemed to enjoy interacting with our flamingos when they went on enrichment walks by his habitat. After introducing Matt to a few members of our flock, the team decided to see if he’d like to join a flock walk back in July. As you can see from this video, Matt did an amazing job and loved flamingling with his fabulous new friends! Our Bird Care Specialists are currently working on a voluntary crate training behavior that will allow Matt to safely visit his friends in their new habitat across the Zoo. Voluntary Blood Draw With Tundra the Grizzly Bear 🐻 Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance 2023-12-23 | Miss Tundra, our rescued grizzly bear, may be sleeping the winter away, but we wanted to share this video from a voluntary blood draw she participated in earlier this year! Tundra is the first bear to participate in voluntary blood draws through training in the history of Denver Zoo and this was her third voluntary blood draw. Thanks to the trusting relationships Tundra has with her Animal Care Specialists and our Certified Veterinary Technicians, Tundra knows that if she no longer wants to participate, she can remove her paw and walk away from the session. If she chooses to participate, she receives extra snacks in addition to her regular diet. This blood draw was under two minutes and she enjoyed some tasty beef throughout this process! This is one of the many ways we use positive reinforcement to allow Tundra to voluntarily participate in her health care, which helps us take the best care of her! 🐻

Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep Zoomies! Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance 2023-12-16 | Here’s an adorable video of Rita, Violet and Amber zooming around Sheep Mountain! Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep are agile climbers that can climb steep, rocky slopes with ease. They can jump seven feet across wide crevices in their rugged habitat and can even turn in mid-air, landing on small ledges of rock. As you can see with Violet and Amber, even young ewes can scamper across rocky terrain! In the wild, this climbing ability helps bighorn sheep escape from predators. Happy World Tamandua Day! Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance 2023-11-30 | We’re celebrating #WorldTamanduaDay with another edition of #WalksWithWinnie! Winnie is the youngest and spunkiest of the southern tamanduas who call the Zoo home, and she loves her enrichment walks. Thanksgiving Feast For Our Raccoon Sisters! Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance 2023-11-23 | We aren’t the only ones feasting today! Our leucistic raccoon sisters, Pecan and Cashew, enjoyed a delicious Thanksgiving feast made up of hard-boiled eggs, clams, crawfish, pineapple, edamame, sweet potato, green beans, peas and carrots. Raccoons are omnivores, so these items are all staples of their daily diet. Our Nutrition Team presented these foods in a fun new way for our girls! 🤍 REMINDER: Denver Zoo is closed today, November 23, in order for our staff to spend more time with their loved ones. We will reopen at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, November 24.

Happy World Jellyfish Day from our Upside-Down Jellies! Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance 2023-11-03 | In honor of #WorldJellyfishDay, here's 40 seconds of Zen with some of our funkiest filter feeders: the upside-down jellyfish. Did you know that these jellies are host to photosynthetic dinoflagellate algae? By flipping themselves upside-down, they’re able to get maximum sunlight on their arms which helps the algae photosynthesize. The jellies live off the algae’s byproducts and captures zooplankton for additional energy. Come check them out the next time you visit Tropical Discovery!

Matt Dillon Flamingles with Our Flock Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance 2023-10-30 | A few months ago, our Animal Care Specialists noticed that our white-faced whistling duck, Matt Dillon, seemed to enjoy interacting with our flamingos when they went on enrichment walks by his habitat. After introducing Matt to a few members of our flock, the team decided to see if he’d like to join a flock walk. Flamingo Testing New Floors 🦩 Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance 2023-10-28 | We’re tickled pink that our new Flamingo Habitat opens next month! 💖 While our Bird Care and Planning Teams have been working tirelessly to ensure this new habitat has everything needed for our flamingos to thrive, our flockstars have also been hard at work! Happy Bat Appreciation Week! 🦇 Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance 2023-10-28 | Spooky season is officially here which makes October the perfect time to celebrate #BatAppreciationMonth and #BatWeek! 🦇 Vampire bats are given a bad rep, but they’re not a creepy as some people may think! These not-so-creepy-cuties are sanguivores, meaning they feed on or consume the blood of other animals, and vampire bats are the only mammals that feed exclusively on blood. After landing on a potential food source, vampire bats use their razor-sharp incisors to make a tiny, painless cut in the skin of the animal. Their saliva contains an anti-coagulant called “draculin” that keeps blood flowing from the wound. Contrary to popular belief, vampire bats don’t suck blood, but rather use their grooved tongues to lap up the free-flowing blood. Rudy the Black Rhino Enjoys a Pumpkin Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance 2023-10-23 | Take a look at this video of Rudy our Critically Endangered Black rhino enjoying an extra special fall treat. This pumpkin grew a few feet away from his habitat from seeds that were likely spread by squirrels from other pumpkins Rudy enjoyed this time last year. Our animal care specialists have been watching this pumpkin grow over the last few months in Rudy’s “garden,” and were excited to watch Rudy enjoy his homegrown treat. Looking gourd, Rudy! 🎃 🦏

In honor of this special day, we’re joining #NotOnOurWatch, AZA-accredited institutions and conservation organizations around the world in waddling towards a brighter future for Endangered African penguins. 🐧 Here at Denver Zoo, we’re proud to support African penguin conservation by partnering with other conservation organizations like Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) and Seafood Watch in addition to participating in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ African Penguin Species Survival Plan.
