When it comes time to close a runway for construction, or rehabilitation, the benefits that an airport provides to its users, become harder to attain, and in the case of an airport, with only one runway, airport services, cease to exist at all.
In the summer of 2022, following a year and a half of pre-planning, the Durango La Plata County Airport took on a challenge, that many doubted, could ever be accomplished. The airport would be tasked with completing a long of airport projects.
This list included milling, and paving, of Durango’s sole runway… 3/21. The runway would remain closed during this phase of the project, and the airport would no longer be able to serve its community. During this phase of the project, Durango’s sole runway would be completely closed and would remain closed, for 10 full days.
With an onsite asphalt plant mobilized, crews were able to work around the clock to reconstruct the entire length of Durango’s 9,200-foot runway.
In the end, the goal of getting the best product, while also minimizing the impacts to the airport, became a reality, and in only 10 days, the airport’s runway was rejuvenated well above the minimum standards…actually, it was award-winning standards.
And only hours after the reopening of Durango’s runway, the Durango-La Plata County Airport went back to doing… what airports do, and it could be said that one of these things, is saving lives.

In this last video in our series about the Eisenhower Tunnel History, our CDOT Historians talk about the legacy and importance of the tunnel as a historic resource in our state and beyond.
Construction of the Eisenhower Tunnel was many years in the making, facing numerous challenges and setbacks. It was an engineering feat and amazing accomplishment to build a tunnel through a mountain along the Continental Divide, and it’s all thanks to the thousands of people involved in the monumental task of planning, designing, and constructing the Eisenhower Tunnel.
As you drive through the Eisenhower Tunnel, our hope is you’ll appreciate the story behind what it took to create it, and to understand the work that goes into keeping the tunnel open and operating safely on a daily basis.
There’s only one Eisenhower Tunnel, and we’re thankful for this important link in Colorado’s transportation system!

Thanks to our Team CDOT employees who work at the Eisenhower Tunnel! CDOT crew members are responsible for maintenance and repairs in and near the Eisenhower Tunnel year round. All tunnel employees are trained firefighters, and the tunnel has its own fire truck and tow truck so crews can respond to emergencies and clear crashes in or near the tunnel. These team members are also responsible for monitoring the air quality levels Inside the tunnel and control the ventilation fans to ensure the carbon monoxide levels are kept low. There are also team members in the tunnel’s control room, monitoring the cameras as vehicles travel through the tunnel to make sure travel conditions are safe and smooth and to alert our maintenance crews when an issue arises.
This team works hard 365 days a year to keep the Eisenhower Tunnel open and operating for the traveling public!

When you drive through the Eisenhower Tunnel, there’s more to it than you may know. Behind those tunnel walls and above the ceiling, there are extensive systems in place and crew members working to keep the tunnel open and operating 24/7!
Inside the tunnel you’ll find:
-A large-scale ventilation system including twenty eight 600 horsepower fans to keep the air inside the tunnel circulated and free from carbon monoxide
-Electrical systems and generators to keep the power running
-Maintenance equipment and the tunnel’s very own fire truck and firefighting trained team members to respond to emergency incidents in or near the tunnel
-A control room with television screens to monitor real-time traffic conditions
-A water treatment plant and drainage systems for the snowmelt and water from the mountains
Next time you travel through the Eisenhower Tunnel, you can appreciate this vital structure for being much more than just a tunnel!

One of four aviation fuel providers located at the airport, jetCenter of Colorado became the first to take on a load of the unleaded avgas produced by Swift Fuels.
Centennial’s move to unleaded avgas comes in response to the local community's voice and the Eliminate Aviation Gas Lead Emissions Program led by the Federal Aviation Administration. The program’s goal is to see a full nationwide transition from 100LL to unleaded avgas by the year 2030.
With much of Centennial Airport’s traffic consisting of training flights, flight schools based at the airport have shown their support for the transition. To date, 80 percent of the aircraft operated by flight schools at Centennial Airport are now certified to safely use UL94 unleaded avgas.
It’s anticipated that other Colorado airports will soon follow Centennial’s lead with Broomfield’s Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport announcing possible future plans for the transition to unleaded avgas.

The Eisenhower Tunnel is a vital connection to safely move people and goods from the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains to the western slope. But, before the Eisenhower Tunnel was built, the main east-west routes in Colorado were US 6 and US 40. In the winter months or during inclement weather, those routes were often treacherous.
When the Eisenhower Tunnel opened to two-way traffic in March of 1973, it created a safer and more efficient connection from the front range to the western slope for Colorado residents and visitors alike. It wasn’t long after the Eisenhower Tunnel opened that the need for the second bore (the Edwin C. Johnson Memorial Bore) became evident. The next chapter of the tunnel’s story unfolded when construction of the Johnson Bore began in August of 1975 and opened to traffic in December 1979. At that time, Interstate 70 across Colorado was nearly complete, leading to the much-needed connection between the eastern and western parts of the state!

Did you know? Construction of the Eisenhower Tunnel began on March 15, 1968, signaling the start of the largest single federal-aid highway project in the nation’s history at the time. Construction was anticipated to be complete within three years, but the geology of the tunnel site presented engineering challenges. After trying several methods out, the best solution was called “multiple drifts”- building smaller tunnels around the main bore and filling them with concrete to stabilize and hold up the mountain.
The Eisenhower Tunnel opened to traffic on March 8, 1973, after five years of construction. It truly is an engineering marvel!
