Disturbing Video Game Music 25: That Voice... (Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets GBC)Reboundary2026-09-21 | Disturbing Video Game Music 25: That Voice... (Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets GBC)Top 8 Braid tracksReboundary2024-01-19 | AKA every song on the soundtrack, because it's more fun to talk about every song than just a top 5. Shoutout to Shira Kammen, Jami Sieber, Cheryl Ann Fulton and Jon Schatz for such a great soundtrack.

I'm not disappearing again, just for the purposes of Spooktober this year. Once again, hope all of you have a great Halloween.Top 10 Most Disturbing Boss Themes in non-Horrorish Video GamesReboundary2023-10-30 | Happy Halloween! There is still one more DVGM coming up but I wanted to hold off showing my hand too early.
I think I explain my qualifiers pretty well in the video, but for all intents and purposes it's to make me feel better about not including the most obvious stuff like the intermission music. (I can say it would not have challenged the top 3 at least)

We're keeping it indie but going really retro now, like ATARI era inspired. Still with the sensibilities of an RPG maker horror game though.
Modern audio and file management does allow for some more complex songwriting here. Tense and dark as hell, with a unique approach.Disturbing Video Game Music 215: Termitnik (Pathologic)Reboundary2023-10-29 | Pathologic, compared to its fairer and more qualitative sequel/remake, got a bit of a reputation for being just plain obtuse.
And here we have some serious dark ambience intercut with realistic screams for an asylum. Lovely.Disturbing Video Game Music 214: Music 11 (Au Sable)Reboundary2023-10-28 | Credits for the track rip to kuteragenesis. Because this is one of the other games by amon-26 that is all one file. No official name for the track or anything.
A frankly frightening track, with screaming and hints of melodies distorted beyond recognition.Disturbing Video Game Music 213: Relentless (Fear & Hunger: Termina)Reboundary2023-10-27 | This time the second game, which probably has my personal favorite soundtrack of 2022. Partly I feel like I've been waiting for another game with a soundtrack as innovative as OFF, and in this game I got it.
As for a first showcase, we have… this. Following in a long tradition of chaotic pieces with screaming that started with [franchise I do not wish to associate with anymore]. I don't know if it was intentional for these screams to be that similar to ones that can be heard in a frightening diegetic moment later in the game, but it works all the same.Disturbing Video Game Music 212: Hub (Teocida)Reboundary2023-10-26 | Quite in the same vein as the previous game, this time it's brazilian developer Vikintor who really has a knack for the surreal, and really just buckwild aesthetics.
While this doesn't quite strike a nerve like the last track, it is still quite intense with that main rasping sound driving the track sounding like really labored breathing, plus a sort of normal breathing sound coming in at various moments. Quite oppressive in fact.Disturbing Video Game Music 211: Endless Shadow (Gyossait)Reboundary2023-10-25 | Honestly, surprise creepy songs in otherwise kid-friendly games was more Alex Rochon's ballpark anyway, I'm just really into those obscure flash and RPG maker games. On that topic, amon-26 is a developer with a… unique aesthetic. Three games have come into the public consciousness somewhat, but only this one was published on Newgrounds (putting it in such illustrious company on this playlist as The Bright in the Screen and Time Fcuk) while the other two were singular files available for download. Subsequently, audio files from those games are next to impossible to get ahold of.
Boy, remember when I talked about a track that felt like auditory hell last year? This is very much in the same realm. It might actually be worse, because the way it's layered makes it harder to grasp and may actually be fraying my nerves a bit.Disturbing Video Game Music 210: Blasted Collection (Shin Megami Tensei IV)Reboundary2023-10-24 | Suggested by Conkel.
I have a complicated relationship with SMT. I love the sister series Etrian Odyssey, but modern Persona in particular is something I struggle a lot with. The main series seems like something I definitely could enjoy but never really got around to.
Anyway, here are some tracks from an alternate reality where Tokyo is reduced to rubble.
Blasted Tokyo:Disturbing Video Game Music 209: Black Blood (Shadow of the Colossus)Reboundary2023-10-23 | Shadow of the Colossus sure is a game people have thought a lot about sometime in the past. I appreciate its place in at least drawing a wider platform for boss games and the music is genuinely still great.
This track is quite unlike anything else in the game. Even the other calm tracks had some sense of triumph. The entire soundscape is something so primal and ferocious, no sense of anything but a dangerous beast.Disturbing Video Game Music 208: The Gauntlet (Fear & Hunger)Reboundary2023-10-22 | There's kind of a through line here, because HLD also has a track called The Gauntlet. Anyway, you might have guessed, but Funger is the series I've been hinting about sometimes this season. It's a contentious one, thanks to some less than savoury topics depicted within. I'm probably also going to upload something from the second game because that soundtrack is astonishingly good overall.
But onto a track from the first game. That heavy banging is quite something, and the screaming that almost sounds like an air raid siren is just otherworldly. Terrifying, really.Disturbing Video Game Music 207: The Hermit (Hyper Light Drifter)Reboundary2023-10-21 | Suggested by Erick Miguel, although it was up for consideration before then. Third feature of HLD, too.
It's not quite as frightening as Chimera, but still really heavy on the discordant tones and distortion in the instrumentals. Just sounds wrong.Disturbing Video Game Music 206: Onboard the Tancred Bastion (Warhammer 40K Darktide)Reboundary2023-10-20 | Another request by chaosbuster. I'm not super familiar with Warhammer aside from what I've gleaned off the Magic: The Gathering crossover. And even then, I only knew about the miniature side of things, not much about the fact that there are video games? But what isn't a video game these days honestly?
Quite a bit of tension with some spooky spooky noises mixed in. Honestly reminds me of like space age elevators and stuff.Disturbing Video Game Music 205: ICE CREAM! (Milk Inside a Bag of Milk Inside a Bag of Milk)Reboundary2023-10-19 | Boy, DDLC sure set off a whole genre of psychological horror visual novels huh? This might be the shortest game I've ever covered, clocking in at around 15-20 minutes. About a girl with severe anxiety issues trying to go to the store and buy milk. There's a bit of a meta aspect where the player kind of communicates directly with her. Pretty neat.
Another bleak song with a shifting synth line that comes and goes. Quite like a dirge in some ways.Disturbing Video Game Music 204: Duchess Battle (American McGees Alice)Reboundary2023-10-18 | Love Alice in Wonderland. Hot take I know. American McGee's Alice and its sequel seem very neat and creepy, but it's kind of a case where the original story is so esoteric that it seems too obvious? That might be a terrible take on the other hand.
Another disturbing boss theme. A bit more meat on it than the Jabberwocky honestly. That crying and rumbling is just plain unsettling.Disturbing Video Game Music 203: Beneath Hyrule Grounds (The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom)Reboundary2023-10-17 | Suggested by chaosbuster1275. Guess who still doesn't have a Switch? This guy. Although by all appearances, I feel like I would simply get overwhelmed by the complexity of mechanics present in this game. Way more tempted by the Link's Awakening remake.
This track is very ominous and introduces the choir motif associated with the gloom. Honestly it is pretty unusual in how abrupt the sounds come, which is freaky. Of course there's a bit of discordant piano chords at the end there for good measure.Disturbing Video Game Music 202: Bile (LISA)Reboundary2023-10-16 | LISA again. Turns out I did miss something in my bigish Lisa the First collection. Christ what a messed up game this is. It's also one of few songs that return for LISA the painful.
Dour tones, and that freaking percussion that unnerves me so. And the saxophone is not a positive motif in this game to say the least.Disturbing Video Game Music 201: Dream House (Pathologic 2)Reboundary2023-10-15 | Mark me up as one of the many people who became aware of Pathologic through HBomberguy's video, and I was very late to him as well. In spite of one of the old countdown creators probably naming themselves after him. I guess I was vaguely aware at the very least. There's another game series with a remarkably similar history and punishing levels of difficulty coming up. Some gnarly scratching happening here. A whole different style of dark atmosphere.Disturbing Video Game Music 200! Doom 64 CollectionReboundary2023-10-14 | awesome burial did suggest the BGM for Breakdown (I'm not one to talk, I accidentally still did the level name for the last one), but I have also been stewing on this idea for a bit. Not including Dark Citadel (though technically the track title is Voices in the Blood) or Other Side of Madness, due to them being in their own DVGMs. And it's not all the map themes because there are some legitimately cool tracks in there.
The Madness (Staging Area): Kind of a flipside counterpart to Other Side of Madness, a dark industrial piece with some really freaky rumbling. Definitely one of the most structurally creepy on the soundtrack.
Warped Hive (Terraformer): Feels like a track that might have influenced the Iron Lung soundtrack. Prominent metallic creaking, more weird noises, but it has some semblances of classic Doom music in small doses.
The Rotted Foul (Breakdown): Now we're getting into some proper demonic stuff. The rumbling has a lower, more menacing tone and the kettle sound from Voices in the Blood is back, plus some very weird siren thing and those awful voices near the end. Pretty intense.
Perfect Hate (Pitfalls): Similar to the last one, yet much bleaker and more sparse at the start before growing in intensity.Disturbing Video Game Music 199: Vomitgirl (.Flow)Reboundary2023-10-13 | I have kind of been looking for a reason to finally fit .Flow in here. I may not have been looking hard enough, although I think this particular track has a habit of not showing up in soundtrack playlists.
An intense track for the payoff of a very intense area. Lord almighty.Disturbing Video Game Music 198: The Giants Lair (Bug Fables)Reboundary2023-10-12 | Composer: Tristan Alric
Well, another game I kinda gave up on. My willpower is not great at times.
It's fun to have at least one song with more traditional instruments. Not that it stops this from being really creepy. That trailing piano may set up a nice main melody, but everything else is just so disquieting. The booming tuba, those awful vocals, everything just feels… wrong.Disturbing Video Game Music 197: Sombre Interlude (Resident Evil Remake)Reboundary2023-10-11 | Suggested by Andrew Guerra. Resident Evil has a colorful past to say the least, coming up as Silent Hill's more actiony cousin, dropping the ball after 4 and finally finding its footing again with 7 and Village. I've just never been that big into FPS games.
Parts of this is somehow goofier than the previous track. Some good old horror camp mixed in here. Still, the drone, choirs and general suspense does unnerve quite a bit.Disturbing Video Game Music 196: Down (The Upturned)Reboundary2023-10-10 | Back to the new games, The Upturned is a silly little horror game that might have taken some inspiration from Gregory Horror Show, I'm not entirely sure. A standout is the soundtrack, in which quite a lot of tracks sound like Wario Land 4 cranked up to eleven. But this is not one of those tracks. It's a cinematic, unsettling piece taking place as the elevator fails and makes a sudden drop. Man, elevators sure have come up twice this season, huh?Disturbing Video Game Music 195 Small Pressure Road CollectionReboundary2023-10-09 | Suggested by Mac Nava, or at least one version was, but I wanted to talk about both remake versions. The originals are very meh, as you do with old games. I've talked about Ys a couple of times before, a classic action game that started on the Famicom among others.
I and II Collection version: Not unfairly compared to a certain bad future song from Sonic CD. Chaotic, dark, and kinda reminiscent of Star Trek in parts with the loud explosion-like percussion thing?2 Complete: This is the closest we might get to actual breakcore, which is to say not very close at all still. But a very creepy and intriguing mix of sound effects and electronic sounds nonetheless.Disturbing Video Game Music 194: The Beast (Wandersong)Reboundary2023-10-08 | I've talked about Wandersong before, I still maintain I had a good time, but Orderscape turned out to be a bit too much for me.
And speaking of strings, this song is super tense. Pretty cool, but rather frightful.Disturbing Video Game Music 193: Infiltration (Chants of Sennaar)Reboundary2023-10-07 | Another new game, a puzzle game with a stellar soundtrack, kind of reminiscent of Journey. Creepy voices, psycho strings, but with a mix of beautiful melodies in there somewhere. Fitting infiltration music really.Disturbing Video Game Music 192: The Mouth is Wide (Lunacid)Reboundary2023-10-06 | When Dark Souls won't provide the creepy music, spiritual inspirees have to pick up the pace.
And a good drone has definitely been missing so far. Creepy dark atmosphere I always have time for.Disturbing Video Game Music 191: Industrial Junk (Fallout)Reboundary2023-10-05 | Can't all be indie games this year, as much as I'd like to. Time to go back to the original Fallout again. A game I haven't played, la dee da. Real spooky piece this time, lots of creepy industrial sounds. Simpler side, but still effective.Disturbing Video Game Music 190: Organic Nightmare (Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass)Reboundary2023-10-04 | I find I may have a bit of an issue with games that are too derivative, and this one's a double whammy, taking inspiration from both Mother and LISA. It was fun for a bit but the battle system just didn't gel with me.And speaking of influences, it's hard not to draw comparisons to Some Rudiments of Propriety from OFF here with the heavy, wet breathing sounds. But i digress, it's quite a different structure and they add the awful, awful what sounds like bones creaking later. It's a bit lower in intensity, but disquieting all the same.Disturbing Video Game Music 189: Butchery (Elevator Hitch)Reboundary2023-10-03 | Continuing with the newish releases, a free horror VN is next. Really like what I've seen of the game's design and concept.
A bit of a simpler one, this. And it's a slowed down remix of the main theme. Really well-made and unnerving at that. The slowed down melodies imitating creaking and such is a nice touch.Disturbing Video Game Music 188: Cante Desde lo Profundo (Blasphemous 2)Reboundary2023-10-02 | Yes, why not continue with a game released this year, and one I have actually played? In regards to gameplay Blasphemous 2 is definitely an upgrade to the first game, although I will join in on being a bit disappointed in how much the dark atmosphere was downgraded. But this is the one boss in the game that really let show that the old influences still hung tight. Boy, this is almost another Giygas situation, because I really admire how expertly crafted this piece of music is to the fight as well as the fight itself. Super tense, with sharpening sounds and sharp panflute notes to nearly psycho strings levels mixed in well befitting this odd, odd afilador.Disturbing Video Game Music 187: Dread (The Binding of Isaac: Repentance)Reboundary2023-10-01 | So, uh, hi. Some computer problems suddenly hit late last October and I was too embarassed to come back until now. Some very exciting picks and game releases dragged me back. I am even more open for suggestions than last year.
But we're starting with an old game. One I've actually started playing in the last year. It's quite a bit of fun I think. Been on a real roguelike kick, playing Dead Cells and a certain other problematic fave coming up.
Surprisingly not a Jesus Loves Me version this time, rather a distorted version of the floor clear music that only plays under certain circumstances. It's mostly just heavy distortion overlaid on top of the sound, but it is quite effective at instilling, right that, dread.Disturbing Video Game Music 186: Sudden Death 2 (Worms Armageddon)Reboundary2022-10-30 | Worms was like one of my first real fun times with multiplayer games alongside LEGO Racing. Not Armageddon specifically, more Worms 2 because I am kinda old. Its single player mode was better anyway. And the closest to the Chernobyl soundtrack I might ever get with a video game in that it uses sounds associated with nuclear disaster to compose its melody. It does it in usual Worms style with all the subtlety and grace of a holy hand grenade but the sirens and geiger ticking are really effective at dramatizing this rare occurrence, props to the composer.Disturbing Video Game Music 185: Hunger (Swallow the Sea)Reboundary2022-10-29 | Suggested by Erick Miguel who I also have to thank for introducing me to an awesome growing simulator game. Hoo boy, finally getting to the real heavy hitters now. The loud sirens and screeching, plus reversed parts? Holy crap.Disturbing Video Game Music 184: Steven, Were Stuck in a Time Loop (Time Fcuk)Reboundary2022-10-28 | And now we go all the way back to Newgrounds territory. Time Fcuk is as bizarre as the name might suggest, a surreal puzzle platformer with a whole lot of mind screw.
And this is the other sort of sad song I was talking about before. The dreary buildup, the electronic noise, then those last few seconds… Creepy.Disturbing Video Game Music 183: Reality Bender (Milya [broken])Reboundary2022-10-27 | So the guy behind .flow made a surreal walking simulator. It's weird as hell but the translation doesn't do it much favors. Really obscure electronic music this time. Sometimes that's just enough to spook me out.Disturbing Video Game Music 182: Your Catastrophes (Procession) (Omori)Reboundary2022-10-26 | Second time tackling Omori, with a bit of distance this time. The game feels very influenced by Mother 3, but directly works around that game's struggles with tone by compartmentalizing the wacky and the more serious stuff. In a way, this is a direct plot point in the way of Headspace being Sunny's mind making an escape from the trauma. And this is just a creepy, subtle theme I wanted to feature for where it plays more than anything.Disturbing Video Game Music 181: Hospital (After Disaster) (Megami Ibonroku Persona)Reboundary2022-10-25 | Persona is such a widespread phenomenon these days with such humble beginnings. Considering it also far overshadows its parent series Shin Megami Tensei in a way few others have, it's quite a thing. So let's talk some more about Persona 1. It's the last of the discordant piano melodies, but this time accompanied by lots of screaming. Not very subtle, but effective nonetheless. I'm not entirely sure how to feel about the mirthful laughing turning into crazed laughing happening at some points however.Disturbing Video Game Music 180: It Wakes (Iron Lung)Reboundary2022-10-24 | Kind of another Chaos Buster12 suggestion. Made the selection myself. Chalk this up as the most intriguing game so far, a minimalist first-person horror game where you have to rely on radar and photography to find your way. And boy, those are some terrifying metal creaks. Really selling the image of a massive sea creature tearing your rickety submarine apart here.Disturbing Video Game Music 179: Caelid (Elden Ring)Reboundary2022-10-23 | The big new game of 2022. Whoopity doo. I… like the voice acting? I don't get to describe tracks as hauntingly creepy often, but this sure fits the bill. Just a constantly dark and gloomy atmosphere that I am happy never lets up because that's a bit refreshing these days.Disturbing Video Game Music 178: The Irredemiable (Space Funeral)Reboundary2022-10-22 | A weird indie RPG I wish I had gotten around to playing, but the game files seem hard to come over these days. Are creepy voices just going to be a trend now? Very unsettling composition overall, with those windchimes, buzzing and sirens even playing throughout.Disturbing Video Game Music 177: Chamber Below (Skullgirls)Reboundary2022-10-21 | Another suggestion by awesome burial. Man, I did not expect anime fighters akin to Guilty Gear or Blazblue to get the Yooka-Laylee treatment but here we are.
Creepy piano strokes and several of the most disturbing voice tracks of the season so far, hoo boy. That said, it does become a bit more of a song near the end.Disturbing Video Game Music 176: Way of the Dodo (Middens)Reboundary2022-10-20 | I've had my fair share of bizarre games in my time as a gamer, but Middens just about takes the cake. Imagine the unhinged stylings of Earthworm Jim combined with the ontological insanity of Yume Nikki and you might get an idea. And the game's take on dark atmosphere is of course nearly as zany as it is creepy. That nightmarish tapping sound from Screaming Darkness is back, because of course it is.Disturbing Video Game Music 175: Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet CollectionReboundary2022-10-19 | Man, the early 2010s were just a great time for Metroidvanias. This game in particular stands out for having a really awesome aesthetic for the time. And here's a compilation of all the main world exploration themes.
Ocean: Emphasis on some absolutely immense pressure here. The breathy choir helps build the atmosphere.
Ice World: More spooky percussion, backed up by some spooky crystalline sounds.
Creepy Asteroid: Some seriously deep space atmosphere here. The loud bangs at some points really amp it up.
Dangerous Asteroid: A bit more subdued but still a creepy take on space.Disturbing Video Game Music 174: Disk 5 (Minecraft)Reboundary2022-10-17 | Someone suggested this, I'm sorry I seem to have misplaced who. Yada yada, Minecraft is as big as it always has been. While it may not have the start-stop aspects of 13, this disk does provide some really creepy noises and that marching rhythm at the start is really disconcerting in a post-human society world.Disturbing Video Game Music 173: In the Mirror (Celeste)Reboundary2022-10-16 | Ah yes, Celeste. Another game I couldn't quite get a handle on the controls of. And one of two edge cases between disturbing and just plain sad. The tension in the song and the style of vocals do push it over the edge for me, the intermittent drum patterns are putting in some serious work in setting up suspense.Disturbing Video Game Music 172: Proto Two (Baroque)Reboundary2022-10-15 | A bit of digging can sometimes turn up some true hidden gems, like this old horror-themed roguelite for the ps1, with a soundtrack that is either very odd or very 90s anime. Eesh. I feel like I have already emphasized a lot how very sharp notes are a personal nightmare, so welcome to my auditory hell. Until I find something that takes this to Soul Asylum levels but that would be sensory abuse and I wouldn't upload it. Knowing the breakcore genre, it is very possible something like that does exist.Disturbing Video Game Music 171: The Bosun Freaked (Yume 2kki)Reboundary2022-10-14 | Ah, another day, another Yume 2kki DVGM. And technically this is the only upload of this song on Youtube that isn't extended. Enjoy, had to go through some more or less shady converting site for it. And yet. We have the most discordant tune of the season so far. Short loop, but weird in the most stressful way.Disturbing Video Game Music 170: Ghost of Rattman (Portal 2)Reboundary2022-10-13 | Suggested by awesome burial. Admittedly, I'm pretty sure this was the other DVGM that I removed unnecessarily when that copyright scare happened way back. So mostly for nostalgia, here it is again (The other one was Tower of Stars). Dire, almost kinda awesome, but Rattman's deranged and just almost understandable mutterings make it quite creepy.
