The previous Speaker = Generator version could make 10 LED lights blink once. This one drives one hundred LED lights continuously! (continuously-to-the-eye that is. It would need some electronics in between to make it truly continuously) Here, the magnet is driven by a motor, but you could also make something similar that is driven by human power, or wind, or whatever. The speed of the rotation is sensitive though, because it has to be in sync with the resonant frequency of the speaker.

I am in a wheelchair and care budget crisis..
The wheelchair that I need, is not on the market.
If I cannot sit, I cannot do anything.
So first, I have to build a very different & better wheelchair.
The Permobil C500 has a good base and is good to learn from.
Project 1794 is from the early 50's, by the United States Air Force and AVRO Aircraft.
It used to be secret, but in 2012 the information has been declassified.
So yes; a flying saucer! This was serious research, about how to build a real flying saucer, not a UFO of course, but disc shaped aircraft called: Silverbug, Y-2, and the prototype P.V. 704.
They were designed to be VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) fly supersonic and at extremely high altitudes. Up to Mach 3+ and a 100,000 feet.
These specifications are not of a jet fighter. When flying this high and fast, think instead of what has been build in the 60's: the Lockheed SR-71 "Blackbird".
The 2 original reports can be found at "the National Archives".

The main character of this story is John Carver Meadows Frost, a man who's work has been a great inspiration to me, for his many way-out-there aircraft designs. He for example is also the father of the AVRO car.
But yea: Silverbug has never flown? Is that really so?
One of the clearest UFO photos ever made, shows a disc shaped flying something that looks remarkably similar to the designs in Project 1794. These photos were taken by Photographer Ed Keffel and reporter João Martins. They spotted this UFO at Barra da Tijuca, Brazil, on May the 7th 1952.
So; the UFO photos are from 1952, and these final reports are from 1956 and 1957...
If any of you happen to go visit area 51, you may find the Silverbug craft there.
Please make some good photos, that would be awesome!

When there is no electricity available because for example the electricity grid is down, and there are no emergency generators (or they have nu fuel), then how can you charge your: phone, emergency radio and emergency light? Best is to use energy sources such as solar and wind. But if these are not available, there still is this energy source: human power.
Most mobile phone batteries like to work between 20 and 80%. I calculated that you need to generate about 9Wh to charge your smartphone from 20 to 80%. What is the best way to produce 9Wh with human power? Do you need a mobile generator or can it be a more powerful stationary solution? And can you just buy a good human powered generator online, or do we have to make it ourselves? To answer this last question right now: BEWARE that many online products are no good, useless!
In this video I'll show you what works and what does not, and what you can make yourself.

Cleaning everything should fix this, but it didn't. I thought there would be a lot of dirt inside the gearbox, but I was wrong. Anyhow; we did find the root cause and repaired it.
The right to repair is good, but how to repair? Hope this video can help you, if you have the same ILIFE V7s Plus with the same error.
Note: this video is not sponsored in any way.

The title translated from Dutch to English "Almost a tornado in Amsterdam". A Tornado or even a dust devil is super rare in the Netherlands. To see the clouds trying to produce one is very special. I can imagine people from Texas not being impressed by this video at all.

Next to the slow motion videos, we wanted to freeze the vortex ring by flash, to get sharp and detailed pictures of its structure. Therefore we needed an extremely short flash duration.
Turns out; that is pretty easy to get: an ordinary speed-light flash has extremely short flash durations at its lowest power settings. At 1/64th power setting, flash duration is about 1/30.000th of a second.

The text of this video:
Curved Vortex in a Box
I've got 2 new inline fans that work great for vortex experiments.
This time we wanted to make a 90 degrees curved vortex, in a box. In a box because then; the surrounding air can’t disturb the vortex.
Cool thing of a vortex in a box; there are no blowing fans needed to feed the rotation.
There’s just one suction hole, and the amount of air coming in, through the curved air intakes, is exactly equal to the amount of air going out.
Note that the curved air intakes have a honeycomb in them, to give the incoming air the right direction. This proved to be essential.
Also note the chicken wire in the front right corner. Without it, air starts to swirl there, disturbing the vortex.
As you can see; the vortex isn’t steady. A bit of pulsing is normal, but there is some cause breaking it up all the time.
We learned that it is pretty stupid to make a curved vortex in a square box. But we got it to work, kind of.
on my ceiling ...
A PHOTONIC OWL !?
And did you know that every speaker (that uses a copper wire coil and a magnet) can be used as a microphone. It sounds like crap, but it works.
"So, one would expect the air to flow out of the fan horizontally in all directions,
but due to the Coanda effect; the air bends down, to almost 90 degrees
The airflow is being pushed down by the air above, because the pressure of the air in between the flow and the curved surface, is reduced by the suction of the airflow.
Next, an other example of the Coanda effect, where I used smoke to make the flow visible.
Air is being accelerated down, and part of the upper surface is in touch with reduced air pressure. This action gives the object a force up, thrust, that can lift the object.
Henri Coanda realized this, and then designed a flying disc based on this effect, in 1932!"

On my site, I placed a copy of "The Coanda story" (interview, 1956). Great info:

I though this good old movie deserved an image quality boost.
Colors are improved, and the sound is on both channels now.

Around the fan is a swirl chamber. The air is circulating; as much air goes in as out.
Whenever a flat surface comes near the swirl chamber, a pretty powerful vortex (tornado) settles in between. The air pressure inside a vortex is reduced. Both the swirl chamber and the surface are being pushed to each other, by the atmospheric pressure.

The plastic sheet goes up because the pressure above it is reduced. The pressure is reduced because the air comming out of the fan takes part of the surrounding air in it's path, reducing the amount of air. Above the jet of air, the loss of air is easily replaced by the surrounding air, but near under the jet of air is the floor, a surface that prevents air from comming in. The pressure of the air under the jet is reduced while the pressure above the jet is about normal. This pressure difference pushes the jet of air down, making it impossible for the surrounding air to go into the area of reduced pressure. This is equal to the Coanda effect, but instead of a curved surface, a vortex ring is used.

An experiment showing the Coanda Effect: A fan blows a jet of air in all horizontal directions. Instead of shooting away straight, the air follows the curved surface, even when starting from a step pretty far above the surface. The air pressure between the surface and the airflow is lower than the surrounding air. The thrust from this devise is up to 450 grams. Don't believe the "fast air has less pressure" myth, because speed is relative. The air in between gets party removed by the jet of air, and the surrounding air pressure pushes the jet towards the surface. That is what is happening. And yes you could build a flying saucer with the coanda effect. Cool but probably not very efficient & practical.

In may 2011 we (Giesbert Nijhuis, Alex Baumgart, and friends) build the third type of curved vortex machine, to discover if it is possible to lift a craft with the end of a curved vortex. The second type was curved 180º, and this third type only 90º, to reduce the weight and size of the construction, while keeping the total amount of power equal.
We are already working on new curved vortex machines. When ready, I'll post it on YouTube and my site. If it really works; please remember you saw it here for the first time!
In 2011 we (Giesbert Nijhuis and friends) build the second type of curved vortex machine, to discover if it is possible to lift a craft with both ends of a curved vortex. The first type made use of 4 tubes, but is hard to scale to a larger and more powerful size. We discovered by experiments that sucking just one end of a leading edge vortex over a curved edge, produces a fine curved vortex. It can lift a DVD box, about 75 gram.

In 2010 we (Giesbert Nijhuis and friends) build the first curved vortex machine (probably the first-ever), to discover if it is possible to lift a craft with both ends of a curved vortex. I didn't know if a curved vortex is possible to make, but our experiments proved that that is possible. Is seems that a curved vortex can lift, but the test results aren't clear yet. We are already working on new curved vortex machines. When ready, I'll post it on YouTube and my site. If it really works; please remember you saw it here for the first time!
The improved vortex machine gives a great view on the eye of the vortex. A tornado is the big natural phenomena, but inside the tube of a tornado is a vortex, just like this one, only this one has a diameter of only 1 cm. It also reminds me to the shape of a galaxy.
Third vortex experiment of 2010. A vortex machine like this is made by many (4 poles with holes), but I wondered what would happen if we'd crank up the power!
Second vortex experiments of 2010. The little tornado got up to 2.8 meter high this time! The stability of the surrounding & drive air, is much better than last time, but it can still be improved a lot. A huge tornado can be dangerous, but a small one like this is very fragile. If the conditions aren't just right, it disappears in less than a second.
First vortex experiments of 2010. The little tornado got up to 1.5 meter high this time. The improved smoke table made the vortex more clear to see. The previous experiments showed that everything heavier than air gets thrown out of a vortex, and this fire vortex shows that fire -being lighter than air, wants to go to the center of a vortex. The fans on the sides proved to be essential for a vortex this tall. The stability of our vortices, we're going to improve that next time.
A test with my 2004 Coanda effect thruster.
The centrifugal pump on top blows a jet of air over the curved surface of the disc. This causes a drop of air pressure on top of the disc. The engine used here, is a cheap one from a small vacuum cleaner. As you can see, it gives about 288 grams of thrust. The engine uses 652 watts, so that's only 0.44 grams per watt. That's not enough to lift its weight, but enough to push a little car, as shown in this video.
This Black Cat T-shirt is head designed. No hands used! Made with head-movements only.
By now we're able to easily create a tornado of about 1 meter tall. Special about this tornado is that it's a "free tornado", meaning; not inside a glas container or such. Coolest of this experimental day was the connecting of 2 fans by 1 vortex. A little hard to make visible, but it surely was there.
