We did 777 km (420 NM) in 24 hours, equivalent to driving from Amsterdam to London and back by car.
Together with battery maker Northvolt and charging provider Plug, the Candela C-8, Powered by Polestar batteries, beat the prior claimed record of 79 NM in 20 hours. The average speed during the 24-hour run was 17 knots, including charging breaks.
Quick facts about the record:
- With a corridor of DC chargers, we could have driven the 240 nm from Stockholm to Helsinki in 13 hours, 3 hours faster than the Finland ferry.
- The 420 nautical mile record run cost €120 euros worth of electricity, whereas a conventional fossil fuel boat would have used fuel for around €1400.
- A conventional fossil fuel boat would also have emitted around 1785 kg of carbon dioxide over 420 nm. The C-8 emitted 17,4 kg, according to the standard Swedish electricity mix. That equates to 99% less CO2 emitted.Introducing: Candela C-8 Polestar EditionCandela Boats2023-05-23 | Cars aren’t the only form of transportation that needs a change. Episode 1: The C-Foil System with Founder & CEO Gustav Hasselskog.
Hydrofoils are the most important principle in our design, and they can be designed in different ways with varying efficiencies and behavior. Learn more about why, and how we work with hydrofoils in our vessels.
The 100% electric, hydrofoiling Candela C-8’s seakeeping capabilities are second to none for its size. Instead of smashing into the waves, the C-8 flies over them. Thanks to the foils, the ride will be smoother than any conventional boat in moderate waves. Waves up to 1.2 meters pass just under the hull.
The hydrofoils are constantly and automatically adjusted by the onboard Flight controller, to maintain a superbly stable ride in all weather conditions.

To get a feeling of how big difference hydrofoils make, we did bring a conventional power boat out into the waves.
The first instinct when you hit big wake from a ferry in a conventional motorboat is to slow down. But we kept the speed up alongside the C-8 and jumped through the wake powered by a 300 hp outboard. It was a wet and bumpy ride. But the C-8 cut through the waves, in a smooth and silent style that only hydrofoils can offer.
The P-8 Voyager is the first boat that lets its passengers travel through wake-sensitive urban canals or over delicate coral reefs, without leaving a trace. Carrying six passengers and two crew, it takes commercial water transportation to a new level.
