LYRICS: He had his father's eyes He had his father's temper And he wanted me, he wanted me all to himself When you're barely past eighteen Not used to the attention It's so easy, so easy to fall under his spell
And you learn how quickly fairy tales Become so cautionary
Don't fall for the first one Don't fall for the first one Don't fall for the first one Who tells you you're pretty You're pretty Tells you you're pretty
How could you be so smart How could you be so stupid To equate, to mistake possession for true love So he cut the cable And I kept the bruises covered And I starved myself, I made myself so small
And I learned how quickly fairy tales Become so cautionary
Don't fall for the first one Don't fall for the first one Don't fall for the first one Who tells you you're pretty You're pretty Tells you you're pretty
Now I'm spiraling again I can't stop Stockholm Syndroming It's a place that I know, I know all too well When you give all your grace away To those who don't deserve it There's no saving grace, no saving grace for yourself
When you fall for the first one You fall for the first one You fall for the first one Don't fall for the first one Don't fall for the first one Don't fall for the first one Who tells you you're pretty You're pretty Tells you you're pretty
He told me I'm pretty Told me I'm pretty Told me I'm pretty

LYRICS: She is the light that you see from the highway Paper ticket, good for a ride She'll spin you around and around 'til you're dizzy and get off and cut right back in front of the line
She is the feeling of days getting longer The burn of the soda she's secretly spiked She's a great shot and she'll win you a teddy bear And she'll laugh when you tell her that you're still afraid of heights
But up in the air she'll show you the lights of the next town and you'll dream of the things you don't see from the ground
She's onto the next town onto the next town onto the next town like a carnival
She's empty pavement, those last muddy footsteps She's the grass that couldn't survive the weight of machinery towed by the trucks that packed up and pulled out in the cool of a midsummer night
And that teddy bear's just cheap cardboard covered in felt So it sits at the back of your shelf
She's onto the next town onto the next town onto the next town like a carnival
If only there was a way you could bottle up that feeling and you'd drink it in when the days are short and you long
She is the hope that's eternally springing the merry-go-ground that you never outgrow
She's onto the next town onto the next town onto the next town like a carnivalHigh Road - Juliet Lloyd - Live at SAW Showcasejulietlloyd2024-02-08 | Juliet Lloyd's original song High Road, performed live at the Songwriters' Association of Washington Showcase on Feb 15, 2023.Drive Away - Juliet Lloyd Band - Live at Pie Shop DCjulietlloyd2024-02-01 | Live recording of the Juliet Lloyd Band playing "Drive Away," off her 2007 release Leave the Light On. When Letters first came out, I had an idea to do a lyric video that featured people's actual handwriting. I had NO idea how to do this, but using the magic of technology (and youtube tutorials!), we collected lines of my dear fans' handwriting at shows this fall. Along the way, I got to hear stories about what this song means to people and why they chose to write the lines they did. It's incredibly beautiful to see the real handwriting and feel the connection to the meaning of the song.
Thank you so much to everyone who contributed! I hope you'll share and comment, especially if you spy your own penmanship and name in here

LYRICS: You can stop a fire from burning Put out a cigarette You can pour the whiskey down the drain But it’s the taste you won’t forget I can’t unfall in love with you Don’t you think that for a minute So don’t be starting something You can’t finish
You can stop a train from running Drain a riverbed You can stop a song from playing But still hear it in your head I can’t help but picture how this ends Though I know it’s just beginning So don’t be starting something You can’t finish
Once the bullet’s left the gun Once the arrows have been slung There’s no army in the world That can protect me like you can You can walk away Walk away
You can stop a heart from breaking No tears will ever fall You can stop from feeling sorry Nothing ventured, nothing lost You don’t have to say a single word Nothing needs to be forgiven If you don’t be starting something That you can’t finish So don’t be starting something That you can’t finishOver You - Juliet Lloyd Trio - Live at Stages Music Artsjulietlloyd2023-09-01 | Live recording of the Juliet Lloyd Trio playing "Over You," Juliet's song originally released on High Road (EP). LYRICS: I woke up today And the sun refused to shine Everything’s gray Makes you think it’s all sign
But I didn’t mind No I didn’t mind No I didn’t mind That the sun won’t shine That’s how I know I’m over you
It’s how I know It’s how I know It’s how I know I’m over you It’s how I know It’s how I know It’s how I know I’m over you
They say you moved on And she looks a lot like me Except she’s a blond Oh and I’m sure that’s she’s so sweet
But I didn’t care No I didn’t care No I didn’t care About the color of her hair And that’s how I know I’m over you
It’s how I know It’s how I know It’s how I know I’m over you It’s how I know It’s how I know It’s how I know I’m over you
I heard you’re engaged I guess this time it’s not pretend Got my invite today Glad that we can still be friends
I know she won’t mind I know she won’t mind I know she won’t mind When I’m wearing white And that’s how I know I’m over you

LYRICS: There’s a weight, a kind of burden that always follows me around That’s the thing they never tell you to keep your dignity means closure’s never found
Of all the words I could’ve written pages full of ammunition still I chose to hold my tongue instead
I took the high road so why is it that I still feel so low?
You go on, none the wiser making all your same mistakes again And I feel an obligation to stop the things I know I can’t prevent
I may have saved your reputation by avoiding confrontation there’s a thank you that I know I’ll never get
I took the high road so why is it that I still feel so low?
I could sing, I could sing But every day I choose to hold it in I could sing, I could sing But every day I choose to hold it in I could sing, I could sing But each and every day I make the choice to hold it in

LYRICS: Sunlight streaming in Fingers intertwined You know the way our bodies fit together From the very first time
Nowhere else to go No one else to see Cause nothing else really matters Except you and me
So let’s stay here forever Frozen in time
Lie with me A little while longer darling Lie with me
I know you can’t stay forever In the afterglow The cracks beneath the surface Begin to show
Silence grows louder All the things that we don’t say The space in between us Gets bigger every day
But let’s keep pretending Everything’s fine
Lie with me A little while longer darling Lie with me
Now we’re face to face So easy to tell That you're thinking what I’m thinking Oh you know me so well
We both know it’s over So just stay the night

Juliet Lloyd - keys/vocals Steve Quintilian - guitar/vocals Oscar Mulford - cajónGhost Light - Juliet Lloyd originaljulietlloyd2021-02-18 | Brand new original song, performed on Facebook Live on January 21, 2021
This song is a personal anthem written for so many actor and musician friends who have been sidelined since the start of COVID-19. A "ghost light" in theatre terminology is the single light that is left lit onstage when theaters are dark for periods of time. Sending much love to everyone who has been "frozen, waiting in the wings."
Lyrics:
Time capsule echoes of a song that goes unsung We said our goodbyes not knowing when the next hello would come
We’re all frozen waiting in the wings
I’ll still be here I’ll still be here ghost light I’ll still be here I’ll still be here ghost light

and we’re still frozen waiting in the wings

You're shattered
and once again you're left alone
picking up the pieces that are
scattered
across the battlefield where you
laid down your arms and you
add her
just another name on the list
of the people who let you down
Does it matter?
Let me be the one to say I'm sorry
Let me be the one to say everything's OK
Let me be the one to say it's over
Let me be the one
You're wasted
still drown in all your memories
I can be the one to
erase it
Don't keep thinking about yesterday
when tomorrow will come
just embrace it
they say love has got its own way
of healing everything
if you face it
Can you face it?
Let me be the one to say I'm sorry
Let me be the one to say everything's OK
Let me be the one to say it's over
Let me be the one
