Last week, during our visit to Eagle Pass, we received word from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) about a large group of migrants that had just crossed.
Sgt. Rene Cordova, Texas DPS: “The reason they probably cross through here is because there is no fence. The fence enhances their way of crossing; it makes it much harder to cross in these areas.”

Vanessa Marcy is a two-time pageant winner, on top of excelling in school and being a leader within the community.
"I see the little girls in the parades, and I'm like, I see myself in them. And so, I feel that it's just so empowering to see little girls happy to see you up there, and you get to be a role model for them," said Vanessa Marcy, Miss Teen Texas Latina.
She seems to do and have it all, but there is much more behind the crown.
"Sorry," Vanessa said in tears.
"You're okay. Hold my hand," responded Fox SA anchor Ashley Paredez.
Vanessa opened up about what happened to her three years ago.
"I had her call my mom one day and I told her, I was like... 'I don't think I'm going to make it, like, I feel really weak.' I couldn't walk by myself, I couldn't do anything, like, I barely felt conscious," said Vanessa.
Vanessa's grandmother made the call to her mother and rushed over to the hospital.
"When they saw me, they didn't know what to do," said Vanessa.
The medical staff ran tests and took blood in hopes of answers. The biggest fear was she wouldn't make it.
"At one moment, a nurse walks in, and she looks at me and she closes the door, and she comes back in with a glucose monitor. She took my sugar, and she said that she knew that when she saw me, I was going into DKA, and from there I was diagnosed. If it wasn't for her, i probably wouldn't be here today," said Vanessa.
She hasn't taken that granted, even when times have been extremely tough. Doctors diagnosed Vanessa with type 1 diabetes. She soon learned that would become just one of a ripple effect of struggles.
"They would use my diabetes to get to me," said Vanessa.
Vanessa told us the bullying got so bad; she ended up switching to four different schools.
"I felt so threatened there that I didn't feel safe anymore. I wouldn't want to use the restrooms because I was afraid of getting jumped," explained Vanessa.
At that point, homeschooling felt like the best option. Things started to pick up from there, so much so, she even skipped a grade. That success was the start of a new trajectory and her journey into pageantry.
"I didn't even think that it was possible to get accepted," said Vanessa.
Vanessa earned the title of Miss Teen San Antonio Latina. Then, a few months later, she competed for Miss Teen Texas Latina.
"I would continue helping out communities most in need while representing my Mexican culture, my roots," Vanessa responded during pageant.
Her compassion and confidence shined through with judges ultimately crowning her the winner.
"I felt overjoyed, overwhelmed, and I was like, am I dreaming?" said Vanessa.
Her dream of serving others has become a reality. Her platform is one that is close to her heart as it's what she lives through every day.
"I want to make sure to have a strong impact on the community and to help others feel seen and represented. Especially teens right now, not only with diabetes, but one's going through bullying," said Vanessa.
Her work in spreading awareness has already been recognized by many within the community, including Fox SA. Vanessa introduced herself to Ashley Paredez while she was out emceeing a 5K to promote healthy living. Most recently, she caught the attention of Breakthrough T1D South Central Texas/San Antonio. The research and advocacy organization works to improve the lives of those living with type 1 diabetes.
Vanessa was chosen as a youth ambassador and will be part of next month's walk. Her hope is that people will walk alongside her as she continues on her path.
"How do you stay positive through all that?" asked Ashley.
"I've seen two family members that I have in Mexico not have the opportunity to have the medical supplies that I do, and they haven't had that opportunity. So, I always look on the bright side. I always say, 'I get to do this,' responded Vanessa.
Vanessa gets to live the life she worked hard to create and thanks her mother for always being by her side. If you'd like to join both of them for the Breakthrough T1D Walk on November 17 in San Antonio.
This regulation followed a decision by the Ohio Supreme Court, which sided with Republican-led restrictions on drop boxes for voters with disabilities.
Nicole Unzicker, a local voter, expressed concerns about the rule's enforceability.
"We just want to make sure it’s very clear to voters if you’re going to use that drop box to make sure that it is your ballot," said Unzicker.
The directive included a laminated sign on the ballot box, but questions remain about its effectiveness. Surveillance cameras monitor drop boxes 24/7, but the footage isn't continuously watched unless there is a reason to review it.
Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose addressed the enforcement challenge, comparing it to traffic laws.
"It’s illegal to go 100 miles an hour down the interstate, but if we don’t have police officers every single mile of every single interstate, could somebody be doing it at some time and not caught?" LaRose said. "There’s also a component of this where people are expected to follow the law."
Ballot harvesting, or dropping off ballots for others without authorization, is a fourth-degree felony in Ohio. While rare, it has occurred, such as a 2022 case in Summit County where a nursing home worker was charged after surveillance tapes showed her dropping off multiple ballots.
Despite the rule, some voters, like Tom and Ethel, have found ways to comply. Tom had his wife in the car when dropping off their ballots, and Ethel brought her wheelchair-bound friend to drop off theirs.
The question remains whether people will adhere to the new law.
She was last seen on Oct. 6, fighting with her husband at their home in Olmos Park.
We spoke to members of the small community of Olmos Park, who find it hard to talk about Suzanne Simpson, but they say they want to keep her in the spotlight and want answers.
Olmos Park Police said in a statement on Tuesday that, "We feel confident there is a good chance of recovering Suzanne at that location."
We reached out to Abel Pena, a retired FBI Special Agent, on what could have changed.
"Oftentimes that does happen. I mean, there'll be leads that police get, and they'll go out and chase those leads down. But as time does pass, the potential for leads coming in does decrease a little bit," said Pena. "They probably had a pretty, fairly good information that led them to that landfill. And if it takes them somewhere else, and as they get more and more information from the public or from other sources, they'll probably continue to investigate and look for Suzanne."
Pena says with his experience he would go back and reassess the case and see if there’s other potential areas that were missed.
"I'd probably contact other agencies. A lot of other agencies will have different resources available, and just kind of talk to them about what they can offer and bring to the table in terms of trying to find Suzanne," he added.
He believes the police are on the right track, and hopes they get some answers soon.
DPS tells us the investigation is continuing to move forward. But there's still plenty of questions surrounding this case.
We're still waiting to hear more about the status of Suzanne's husband Brad, who's been in custody, and when will we hear from him or his attorney. 53-year-old Brad Simpson is now facing an additional federal gun charge, on top of two family violence charges he was originally arrested for.
According to police, a neighbor reported seeing Suzanne and her husband, Brad, arguing and physically fighting from his window. Shortly after that, he reportedly heard two to three screams coming from a wooded area near the Simpson's home. That's the first area police started searching.
We also asked just how much trash authorities searched through at the landfill and if anything helpful was found.
We'll keep at it and let you know what we find out.

It's been more than a year since his attack and De Los Santos speaks out for the first time.
“What attacked me was a German Shepherd on his hind legs. He was as tall as me. I used to be five foot eight. So I was hitting him, but the damage was being done on my legs by the pit bulls. He was not biting me; he was eating my leg,” recalled De Los Santos.
Doctors not only amputated both his legs, but also added three stents to his heart.
