~~ The Golden Sun Rises ~~
Technically it's not the "last" song that you hear at the end of The Lost Age (it's "Welcome Home"), but this is the song I wanted to upload last :) And what a song! A perfect ending for a perfect game.
This is it everyone! The full soundtrack has now been restored!
I've written a community post to talk about my next plans here: youtube.com/post/Ugkx_WdVgao4V8bFWvIF7aEcq5khzsQx1SRB
~~ Details about the restoration process ~~
Tools used: GBA Mus Riper (midi and samples extraction), agbplay (synth restoration), Reaper. And also my own VST plugin (github.com/justedni/goldensunvst).
Hardware: Roland SC-88 Pro, Roland JV-1080, expansion card SR-JV80-05 World, and Alesis DM5.
Midi files: the sequences are extracted directly from the game but need to be heavily modified in order to play them on the physical modules.
Sounds: most samples have been identified over the years, but some sounds come from my own research.
Synths: in Golden Sun, synths are specific to the internal audio engine, they are completely separate from the other instruments. ipatix managed to reverse-engineer those synths and made the code available on github. I'm using his tool, agbplay, to export them from the game in high quality (at a higher sample rate than what the GBA is capable of)
Drums: Golden Sun 1 uses samples from the SC-88 but on Golden Sun 2, Motoi Sakuraba changed all the samples. While some of them have been identified and come from the Alesis DM5, most samples still haven't been found to this day. I've extracted the samples from the game, denoised, re-panned and cleaned them.
~~ Thanks ~~
Mega thanks to Bregalad (GBA Mus Ripper) and ipatix (agbplay). I would never have been able to do those versions without their incredible work.
Massive thanks to the VGM Instrument Sources community, and especially FreeJusticeHere for his invaluable advice and help!
Special thanks to Coaltergeist and Cyanne for inspiring me!

~~ Page One ~~
Technically this is the very first song that you hear when you start playing the first game (because the title screen doesn't appear until you've saved the game at least once). Such a cool song with a great atmosphere, it always brings a smile to my face.
Fun fact: this is the only song, in the entire soundtrack, that has 11 instrument tracks in its sequence. But this is likely a mistake, because Camelot has set a limit of 10 simultaneous tracks in the audio engine (note: this number can vary depending on the game, but it can go up to 16. Limiting the max number of tracks is likely to be performance-related). So that "track n°11" is in the game data but it will never play. It's simply a delayed copy of track 10, to add that typical "echo" effect to the Music Box. I couldn't decide whether I should keep the track or remove it, and the difference is not big enough for me to upload two different videos, so you'll get both versions in one video! At 0:00 the track is disabled (this is faithful to the GBA version) and in the second loop at 1:26 the track is enabled. Let me know what you think!

FIXED version of a previous video I did: youtube.com/watch?v=YahxCkQ_NvQ (the old video is still available but as unlisted)
There was a mistake in the second loop, some instruments were desynced. Thanks to @BlaxeFrost-X for noticing the error!

What happens during the journey through the Karagol Sea, if you choose the correct people as replacement for the injured oarsmen? Crossbone Isle! (You can of course revisit the island later on) But you first hear this music inside the Fuchin Falls Cave and during several cutscenes.

~~ Apojii Islands ~~
I actually started working on this track in January, it just took me 4 months until I was happy with the final result, it's crazy! This is because I was constantly adjusting the "Steel Drums" sound. This is a bit technical but I'm going to try and explain:
I figured out some time ago that the sample came from the SR-JV80-05 World card. There is a preset called "Steel Drums2", which is a layer of several waveforms. But when I was listening to the GBA sample, it was clear that the sound had been altered! @freejusticehere624 figured it out. The tail portion was modified to create a custom loop effect (originally, the sample doesn't loop!). There are also little additional subtleties, like some audio artefacts that appear when the sampled note get down-sampled quite far in the low ranges (but they are part of the original sound).
I spent a few weeks adjusting everything, in the end I'm using a combination of notes directly recorded from the hardware, and individual notes altered in post-production (one by one!) and playing via my VST. To get the best of both worlds.
And track 4 is just the Balaphone :)
Massive thanks to Justice for his help. We discussed the Steel Drums a lot over the last few months. He spent a lot of time experimenting and tweaking the sound, he absolutely nailed the restoration process of that particular one. Fascinating and inspiring!

Ok so, I made an incredible discovery while I was investigating music from Mario Golf: Advance Tour. It turns out that the other Camelot golf game that was released just a few months later on GameCube, Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, has all the GS2 drum samples, but uncompressed, in HQ! Apparently, Motoi Sakuraba reused those samples in a few other games (so far I have confirmed they are present in Tales of Destiny 2 and Tales of Symphonia). Just to clarify, Toadstool Tour doesn't reuse other Golden Sun "signature" instruments, but just the drums are enough for me to complete my work!
The difference in quality can be subtle, I was already quite happy with my current "restored" drum kit. But on some tracks it's definitely better, so I think I'll update and re-upload some of my old GS2 videos at some point! Watch this space ;)
I'd like to thank @ThePonyGuy1998 for his precious help! He took the time to explain to me how to extract the Toadstool Tour GameCube samples using a tool called Amuse :)
~~ Trouble is Brewing ~~
You'll notice that this song has 3 tracks dedicated to drums! Track 8 has something that looks really close to an actual prog rock drum solo, which is not surprising, knowing Sakuraba-san's background :)
This song plays during "tense" moments, like at the beginning of GS2, when Venus Lighthouse gets activated and Idejima peninsula breaks away from the continent. It plays again when you get a warning from Alex, Karst and Agatio in Champa, and one last time, right in front of the final boss.

~~ Happy Towns ~~
The theme for "happy" towns like Bilibin and Kolima, after you've lifted Tret's curse, but this is also the theme for the town of Lunpa, which you briefly visit early in the game but officially you only come back much later, to save Hammet from Dodonpa. This gets reused in GS2's Gondowan Settlement.
This track uses a combination of both Flute 2 and Flute 1 (they share the same midi channel). For both instruments, I'm only using the individual (restored) samples that were used in the game: full-patch versions don't work well here, the sound of additional samples differs too much from the original feel of the track.

~~ Having Fun ~~
You'll hear this track when you play mini games in Tolbi (in the first game), Lemuria and Contigo (in The Lost Age). This is also the theme for the Battle mode lobby.
The midi track extracted from the game has the same problem as "Desert Heat": some crucial modulation instructions get lost during the export. Thanks again to Justice for noticing the difference! I managed to find the bug in GBA Mus Ripper and fixed it. My fork can be found here: github.com/justedni/gba-mus-ripper. Justice believes that this modulation effect was meant to change the MusicBox sound into some kind of rotary organ. I like this idea!

~~ Desert Heat ~~
There are three Desert dungeons in Golden Sun. Lamakan Desert, Suhalla Desert in Golden Sun 1 and Yampi desert in Golden Sun 2. (Note that the GS2 version of that track would be slightly different since the drum kit uses completely different sounds! I might upload a version at some point)
@freejusticehere624 and I have been discussing the Golden Sun sounds on a regular basis, so I can't thank him enough for his help. He found out that there was some missing modulation information on the midi file extracted with GBA Mus Riper, affecting the Nylon-Str Gt tracks. It's something that I would have totally missed! (Note that basically this affects any "remastered" version that you can currently find on Youtube, since they are using the same midi files)
So I investigated GBA Mus Riper's source code, found the problem and re-built my own version of the tool. I made a code fork here if anyone's interested: github.com/justedni/gba-mus-ripper (you can look at the commit history for the list of changes). Also, Justice is the one who helped me identify the correct sample to use for the Nylon-Str Gt in the first place.

~~ Inside Tret / Altin Peak's Flood ~~
That song first plays at the end of Kolima Forest, when you are inside Tret Tree, trying to get him back to his senses. The song reappears a bit later when you visit the town of Altin while it's completely flooded.
And yes, I mentioned it in previous videos but when I was investigating how to properly restore the soundtrack, I discovered that the modulation effect was tempo-based on the GBA: the pitch gets modulated and the speed varies with the song BPM. I couldn't find a way to do this with existing soundfont plugins so I implemented it in my own VST, using portions of ipatix's source code for agbplay.
I'd like to thank ipatix once again for publishing the code for agbplay on github. And I also want to thank FreeJusticeHere for discussing that LFO with me, and also for helping me identify which sample I needed to record to get the correct sound for the "Nylon-str. Gt"! :)

This is just a short break from my usual Golden Sun videos, they will return soon ;)
As mentioned in my previous video, Motoi Sakuraba and the developers at Camelot reused a lot of Golden Sun 2 assets in that game, and that includes all the sound samples. You immediately recognize Sakuraba's style in the song, and the same instruments that we all know from Golden Sun.
This is just a short break from my usual Golden Sun videos, they will return soon ;)
There's a separate drum track just for the "hand clap" sound, and interestingly, it was already in the GS2 sample bank but wasn't used in any song. Sadly, like with most GS2 drum samples, I couldn't find a 100% accurate match on the Alesis DM5 but I found one that was close enough. Which is why I'm showing off the DM5 in the video ;)
I actually never played that game as a kid, I only discovered it a month ago, and it's awesome! Great gameplay! Thanks to the few people who told me about it in the comments! (I know I also need to try Mario Tennis now)

~~ Winterly Imil ~~
One of the most peaceful tracks in the game. It becomes the main theme for Imil after Mercury Lighthouse is activated, representing how the healing powers of the lighthouse's water were able to eradicate the flu epidemic.
If you're curious about the restoration process, I'm using a combination of several techniques. First I record the main instruments (here, the Oboe, Picked Bass and Pan Flute) with my Roland SC-88 Pro. I carefully select which samples play because sometimes the "full-patch" versions are too different from the game version. The synths (here, it's two Triangle ones) need to be rendered separately because they were custom-made by the Camelot programmers for the GBA and you can't reproduce them with the SC-88 or any existing VST. I created my own VST, using some low-level code from ipatix's amazing tool, agbplay (ipatix was able to create 100% accurate, reverse-engineered versions of those synths!). The VST allows me to record the GS synths at the highest possible quality, and also get some effects that otherwise can't be fully reproduced with the SC-88, like the GBA LFO.

~~ The Final Beacon ~~
That track plays at the very end of the first game, when Venus Lighthouse is lit. It comes back when Mars Lighthouse is also lit, at the end of the second game (which is probably why people named that track "The Final Beacon").
If you listen carefully, you'll notice that this is a modified, slowed-down version of the Golden Sun main theme.

~~ Prelude (Three years later...) ~~
The very short track that plays at the end of the prologue, after you get knocked out by Saturos and Menardi. This is the short version of another track, "The Final Beacon", that plays later in the game, and comes back at the end of The Lost Age.
Fun fact: the sound test version of that track (which is the sequence that I'm using) is slightly longer than the one that plays in-game, because the screen fades to black a few seconds before the actual sequence end time.

Since it's been a very long time since I first uploaded the regular version of that track, and in the meantime I've improved my knowledge and mix techniques, I've made a few changes to the track!

~~ Set Sail! Through the Karagol Sea (Tolbi Bound Ship) ~~
I'm happy to publish this new restored track to celebrate the re-release of Golden Sun 1&2 on the Nintendo Switch today! It's also one of my favourite tracks and favourite moments from the first game. It's such an awesome track that it's been used by Nintendo on several promotional trailers over the years.

~~ Mysterious Caves ~~
I really like that track. I remember that on my very first playthrough (when I was a kid), it took me ages before I could hear the entirety of the loop, because I was constantly interrupted by random encounters. Once again, Motoi Sakuraba's score is truly amazing. The midi tracks are more complex than you'd think on this one! Massive thanks to @freejusticehere624 for his guidance regarding the NylonStr sample.

~~ The Angarian Journey ~~
The majestic overworld theme from the first game. When you're playing, it's difficult to hear it in its entirety if you don't stay idle (because of the frequent random encounters). Fun fact: it's the only song in both games that use the "Trumpet" instrument.
