His sovereignty doesn’t mean surrendering to injustice. beEmboldened 2025-07-21 | Romans 13:1–5 often gets used to justify spiritual abuse:“Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God…”Now, this passage gets twisted into something really dangerous. The idea becomes: “If someone is in a position of authority, they must be God’s choice—and to resist them is to resist God.”That leads to a kind of resignation. I, Naomi, remember thinking, “Well, my dad is abusive… but maybe that’s just the man in him. Maybe God is still speaking through him. I guess I just have to accept it.”That belief—that God’s sovereignty means she had to endure abuse—was common in the circles she was in. And sure, there's a sliver of truth there. Yes, God is sovereign. Yes, He reigns. But the twist is too significant to ignore.Because now the message becomes: Don’t question. Don’t challenge. Don’t hold anyone accountable. Even if they’re causing real harm.That’s not what Romans 13 is about. And it’s not what God wants. His justice isn’t passive.
