Switchglass Double Glazed Comparison Switchglass 2017-02-23 | For further information relating to this video, visit our website: https://www.switchglass.com.au/product/switchglass-shade/Google+: plus.google.com/107956521161990638348/postsLinkedin: linkedin.com/company/switchglassToday we'll be taking a look at double glazed units and how different double glazed units perform in terms of their efficiency and their ability to block out heat when the sun hits them.The first one essentially is normal clear glass, which has basically been put into a double glazed unit and we'll be able to test the performance.The second IGU or double glazed unit that we'll be testing is a hard coat. Now, in Australia the hard coat is acknowledged as one of the highest performing double glazed units for Low-E, however there is another product which is called a triple silver coat and the triple silver coat has a far greater performance than the hard coat and we'll demonstrate that later on in the test to give you an idea of just how much of a difference there is between the hard coat and the triple silver.And the last panel we have essentially is a switchable glass unit combined with a triple silver and so what you have on the back, you have a switchable glass, and what you have on the front essentially is a triple silvered piece of toughened glass and these have all been produced together and they're used whenever switchable glass is in an external application.OK - so let's start the test.The next double glazed unit we're going to test is a hard coat. So, I'll place it back in exactly the same spot. We've got a heat lamp providing heat for us and then again I'm going to apply a heat sheet to the opposite side of the hard coat IGU unit and we'll see how it performs. So this one is taking a little bit longer to change colour, but it is changing colour and we can slowly see how the entire heat sheet is starting to become clear - which is just showing that the heat is essentially coming through the hard coat double glazed unit. And the same as what we've done before I'll use the thermo gun to see how much temperature is coming through the double glazed unit. So this is performing better than the clear but only marginally. So the clear was around 40 degrees and this is approximately 35 degrees showing an improvement of about 5 degrees in and around the same amount of time. And the final demonstration is of the triple silver double glazed, and this essentially is what we use for all switchable IGUs - the triple silver. And so again I'm going to place the heat sheet on the opposite side and see if it changes colour. So at this point we have no colour change at all - so, essentially no sign that the sun's heat is getting through the triple silvered double glazed unit. Just to remind you, we use triple silver on all external switchable glass IGU units. I will test to see whether the heat is coming through - bearing in mind that clear was 40 degrees, the hard coat IGU was 35 and the triple silver is 23. So quite a significant performance difference from the clear double glazed, to the hard coat double glazed to the triple silver.Now remember, all our switchable double glazed units are fitted with a triple silvered soft coat IGU unit, which is the highest performing of any double glazed unit we've showed you today.We've got the double glazed switchable glass with the triple silvered soft coat. I've got a couple of my heat sheets and what I'm going to do is place them on the opposite side, which is symbolic of the inside of a home, and we'll see if we have any colour change. So, we've got the 2 sheets there and we'll leave those there for a few minutes. I'll come back to you just so we can see. We'll leave that there for a couple of minutes and I'll also use the infra red gun to see how much heat comes through on to the other side of the glass.(5 minutes later - no change at all. Almost 50% better than clear IGU and 33% hard coat low-e.)We tested the clear double glazed units. We also tested the hard coat double glazed and the triple silver soft coat double glazed which is combined to all Switchglass double glazed units and it's really designed to handle all the harsh conditions of an Australian summer, but of course can be used universally around the world.

What happens is because switchable film is very moisture-sensitive, you can see that as it’s come apart it’s actually started to come away from the plastic and this is not a good thing. So we can see that when I’ve peeled the switchable film apart from this corner you can see that the liquid crystal density has really come away to the point that it is clear. Now, this is an older piece that’s been exposed externally for approximately 12 months. What I’m going to show you now is a fresh piece of switchable film and this switchable film is brand new from production – it’s less than 2 weeks old. And I’m going to do the same thing – I’m going to basically split the film in half so that we can see the liquid crystals. As I pull this apart what we can see is that there’s great consistency in the liquid crystals. There are no liquid crystals that have come apart – they’re all very, very dense apart from where I have peeled it here – there is a little bit – but this is very, very dense. So I’ll put the two up next to each other. Now the switchable film once its laminated between 2 pieces of glass then it stops degrading because it is not exposed to the environment. But with switchable smart film, the smart film is external and it’s not protected and that’s why when the humidity gets to it this is what happens. So what we can see are the 2 different films – the one on the right is literally clear, there’s no liquid crystals when I peeled it apart because they’ve degraded over the last 12 months because it’s been external. Then I have a piece of Switch film to the left and the liquid crystals, even though I’ve torn them both apart down the middle – I’ve basically split them – so you can see the liquid crystals inside – the liquid crystal density is very, very good and what will happen is, for example, this piece of film once it is laminated it will stop degrading where the film - if I peel this completely apart – that’s 2 halves of a piece of switchable and you can see that the density is really, really good. For one last time let’s look at how bad this is. This is what happens when the film degrades – the liquid crystals start to basically come away and this affects performance. This is why we don’t recommend the Smart Tint.Smart Tint vs Switchglass – What is the difference?• Smart Tint is a film that can be retrofitted (stuck on) to the surface of your existing glass.• Switchglass is a ready-to-glaze product that incorporates a switchable Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystal film carefully laminated between two pieces of glass.There are many promotional videos on the internet showing Smart Tint being easily installed in just a few minutes. These videos clearly over-simplify the process. Handling switchable film (even in the form of Smart Tint) requires considerable skill and experience. If the film is creased, bent or bruised it will damage the liquid crystals inside leaving a clear patch where the damage occurs. Our technicians need a minimum of six months training in the handling, wiring and laying-up of switchable film for lamination and our clean room (a totally dust-free environment) is monitored to ensure quality handling is achieved and optimum standards are met at all times. It should be noted that a number of years ago, with the possibility of marketing these self-adhesive DIY switchable films ourselves, we tested a number of them (including Smart Tint), but based on the results all were rejected. The other thing that's very important is the size of the panel. Some panels, if they're than 1.5 by 1.5 will require two Bus Bars in order to get enough power to the panel to power the panel into a clear state. How to choose the right frame for Switchglass Switchglass 2014-08-14 | Transcript:"Hi, guys. My name is Roman. I'm from SwitchGlass. Today I'm going to be showing you a little bit of helpful information, some tips, some helpful handy tips of how to choose the right frame for your switchable glass panel.The most important thing is that the switch glass conforms with the Australian Building Code. The second most important thing is that the switchable glass will fit into the frame you nominate. Switch glass comes in a number of standard thicknesses. It comes in 9.52, 11.52 and it also comes in 13.52.I wanted to talk to you about a little bit of a case study. This Capral Glazing Channel, you can see that there's a 32x32 on the left hand side of the picture and that will form the bottom excrution and then there's a 45x32mm channel which will form the top of the excrution where the switch glass will be installed.Here's another view and you can see again the 45mm channel at the top, this time demonstrating the glass and a 32mm channel in the bottom with the glass in there also. I did a bit of a drawing here to show people what we really need to do or what's important when glazing switchable glass. You can see that my recommendation is that you allow at least an 18-mm deep pocket. The reason why is it needs to conceal this busbar that you can see here. In this picture, you can see that the busbar is only 10mm but sometimes it can be greater. That's very, very important that the busbar sits deep enough in the channel so you can't see it once the switch glass has been glazed.Looking at the bottom section, you can see that we still need to ensure that the busbar is concealed within the section. This is why recommend 18mm cover. In some cases, it can be a little bit less, but you can see in this picture as we zoom in that we really recommend if possible making it 18mm. You will notice that there are two white wires which I will separate for you here.Basically one is just a spare wire and the other one if by chance that one of the wire gets damaged accidentally during installation. We recommend that your electrician connects both wires up to the transformer, so essentially the white wire and the black wire, we want it connected to the transformer. Switchable Privacy Glass Frequently Asked Questions Switchglass 2014-05-31 | Transcript:"SwitchGlass manufactures switchable glass right here in our factory. Once it's manufactured we send it off to our customers, wherever they may be, either in Australia or even around the world. People can either give us a call and we can organize for a sample to be sent out. There is a small charge for the samples, and those samples are credited back in the event the customer decides to go ahead with a project with us. SwitchGlass lead time varies. It depends on the quantity that's ordered. Typically if it's a small quantity of switchable glass, it can be manufactured quite quickly and will arrive to the customer within 10 days from the time of order. If it's a large project then we recommend customers allow up to 4 weeks. Production capacity is never an issue. We've always been able to meet the demands of our customers. Typically a large project, customers don't need all the glass at once, so we tend to work with the project manager and stagger the deliveries to suit our customers' needs. SwitchGlass doesn't come in standard sizes. Each panel is a custom manufactured product, and we can manufacture almost any size that our customers may need. The largest switchable glass size is 1820 x 3500. Switchable privacy glass can be incorporated in double glazing. We, again, customize each panel to suit the customers' requirements.SwitchGlass is made up of a number of components. The main component is an inter-layer. Inside that inter-layer are liquid crystals, and when those liquid crystals are charged with an electrical voltage, they are powered into a clear state. We take that inter layer and we laminate it between two pieces of glass under heat and pressure to give us the final product, which is a laminated switchable glass panel. Switchable glass runs off a transformer. It's very much like a low-voltage downlight. What happens is we take the normal 240-voltage current and it's cut down with a transformer to 65 volts. Switchable glass uses very little power to operate. It works on roughly around five watts per square meter. All switchable glass are powered by a copper busbar. This busbar is laminated in between the glass and it makes contact with the liquid crystal inter-layer and it's essentially the charge through the transformer that powers this copper busbar and it allows the glass to go clear. Switchable privacy glass can certainly be hooked up to a remote control. The number of options are literally endless. It's easy to think of switchable glass essentially like a low-voltage downlight, so whether you have a remote control, c-bus, Wi-fi. The possibilities are endless. Switchable glass can be manufactured with holes in it. Prior to the lamination and manufacturing of the glass, the holes are cut in the pieces of glass cubes and also we cut the holes in the inter-layer. Switch glass doesn't needs a specialist installer to install it. Typically it would be placed by your local glazier, or your project manager would facilitate the installation of the glass. SwitchGlass requires a licensed electrical installer to install the transformers to essentially a power source and also connect each of the switchable panels to that transformer. Switchable glass is able to manufactured into different colors. Essentially what the customer will need to do is select the type of glass of which the switchable glass is laminated between. For example, if they want a dark look they can use a grey glass and this will give glass a different color. The life span for switchable privacy glass is very, very good. The longest operating switchable panel has been operating for approximately eighteen years at IBM in the US, and from our own tests, we've had switchable panels that have operated trouble-free for at least five years and more than three and a half million switches.The standard warranty for switchable privacy glass is one year. Switchable Glass PDLC Privacy Glass Switchglass 2011-12-20 | Transcript:"We're at Home Base Expo in Subiaco where SwitchGlass has an interesting display of their privacy glass and LED display glass. Their choice to display their new switchable glass and a panel of LED display glass alongside the lower ramp on the ground floor presented some minor challenges. Firstly, the existing glass panels had to be removed and their irregular shape measurements, the panels being on an incline between upright supports precisely replicated. With electric glass panels there's no room for error as each panel is individually constructed to a client's specific measurements. Any errors would be a costly exercise. SwitchGlass, a subsidiary of Secure Glass, is a long-standing member of the Australian Glass and Glazing Association and, as is to be expected, their glaziers are experienced and competent tradesmen. The panels duly arrived and fitted perfectly, a testament to that skill. The electrically-powered panels were to be switched by a series of sensors activated by the passing pedestrian traffic. The LED display glass panel operates on direct current, whereas the adjoining privacy glass panels operate on a step-down low alternating current. Both use only minimal power.
