A few months ago, I noticed something weird:

You probably don’t think of your ears as a place where you’d find muscle tension, but actually you have muscles all over your face and head.

Do thoughts create feelings? In order to understand the link between thoughts and emotions, it’s important to know what influences our thinking.

If you want to change your life, you’ve got to start with your thoughts… or so says every personal development meme ever.
When it comes to mind and emotion, the common assumption is that thoughts create feelings, which result in behavior.
But is that really true?
Do thoughts really create emotions that drive us to make decisions, either good or bad?
Well actually...no. Not exactly.
Because emotions and feelings are produced by your nervous system. And it turns out, you’ve got neurons all over your body.
What that means is that sensory data -- i.e. stuff you see, hear, touch, taste, and smell -- influences your emotions.
A lot of this sensory data bypasses the rational, thinking part of your brain entirely and goes directly to your emotional centers.
For every one neural pathway running from your rational brain to your emotional centers, there are two going the other way. What that means is that your conscious thinking brain is more narrating your experience than directing it -- finding reasons for why you feel and behave the way that you do.
This is such an important topic to discuss because there’s a lot of misinformation abounding about changing your thoughts to change your life.
Is it important to focus on positivity in your life? Of course.
However, if the sensory experience your body is having is one of threat and danger as a result of stored, unprocessed stress and trauma, then you’re essentially banging your head against the proverbial brick wall.
This is where people usually start to feel like something is wrong with THEM.
But there isn’t. I promise.
Your nervous system is working perfectly. We just need to intervene at a different level.

If you’re someone who frequently struggles with anxiety -- or even just worried thoughts -- you might think your brain is broken.
Not true.
Anxiety is actually a survival mechanism.
It tells you when you’re in danger -- or at least when your nervous system believes it is.
Anxiety tells you to step away from a high cliff edge so you don’t fall to your death. It warns you when a person has bad intentions (usually we call this intuition).
But we can experience anxiety in situations where we are actually safe -- and that’s when it becomes a problem.
In these cases, your nervous system has gotten “stuck” in danger mode. The whole world suddenly looks like it’s out to get you.
Cue the anxiety!
This is a big problem because “danger” can look like making new friends or business connections.
It can mean putting yourself out there for a promotion or going for a big new client.
It can shake your confidence -- literally, by giving you the jitters -- before your big competition.
Anxiety can tell you to stay small, play it safe, keep to your lane -- when what you really want is to reach for the stars.
Most anxiety treatments focus on changing your thoughts -- thinking positively, using affirmations, etc.
Or, they might suggest taking a deep breath (hard to do when your diaphragm is frozen in fear -- and yes, this happens).
What we really need are methods to jolt your nervous system out of danger mode and back into safe and happy mode (assuming you’re not actually in physical danger, of course).
This doesn’t happen at the thought level -- it happens in your biology.
In your autonomic nervous system, to be exact.
Your vagus nerve is part of your autonomic nervous system and functions to help your body deal with stress.

When it comes to how to improve your horse riding position for better balance and stability in the saddle, most equestrian riders wait until they’re actually riding the horse to work on it.
But this is a huge mistake!
Here is what fifteen years of clinical practice has taught me: humans do not move symmetrically.
We have bad habits and learned movement patterns. We compensate for old injuries and guard areas of our bodies where we have had pain.
This is all happening subconsciously, of course.
Here’s the thing:
If you’re crooked OFF the horse, you’re certainly going to be crooked ON the horse!
The time to work on your seat is before you actually get into the saddle because if you can’t find balance on stable ground, you’re not going to have the ability to ride without interfering with your horse's performance -- or worse, causing him pain!
And just riding a lot won’t necessarily fix the problem either.
I’m not going to deep dive into the neurology of how your body develops movement compensations here because there’s just not room.
But, suffice it to say that you sort of have to teach your brain where your body is and how it can move in order for it to have access to balance and coordination while you’re doing something that demands a lot out of you like riding.
In fact, professional NFL athletes have specific coaches that they work with not on technique, not on strength, but *just* to be able to move better and with greater efficiency.
That alone bolsters their performance, and quite likely reduces the incidence of injuries as well.
Equestrian riders are athletes, too, and like every good athlete, we have to cross train.

When it comes to trauma stored in the body, people usually ask me two questions.
The first is:
How do I know if I have trauma stored in my body?
The answer to that one is, you do. We all do. Trauma is a part of life and we’ve all got stuff.
(Even if you don’t remember it.)
It’s why our shoulders are tight and our backs ache. It’s why we get weekly massages and go to therapy.
It underlies most chronic health conditions and makes them worse.
Case in point:
Did you know that researchers have drawn a connection between experiencing racism and a higher prevalence of adult onset asthma for black women?
Trauma isn’t always about the Big Events. Yes, those count. Of course they do.
But so does having a distant mother (who likely had her own trauma).
Cultural shaming (hello women who were constantly told to be quiet, be small, not take up space).
Toxic work environments. Not being heard. Microaggressions.
And of course the ever prevalent accidents, injuries, falls out of trees and off horses, broken legs, cracked ribs, etc, etc, etc.
So, you’ve got some trauma. You don’t have to call it that, but it’s there, okay?
Now the second question: what do we do about it?
This is the part I love. SO MUCH of the conversation surrounding trauma in our culture boils down to understanding the narrative -- what’s your story?
That’s important, BUT…
It doesn’t get to the biological roots. These parts of our bodies are up to 500 million years old and they frankly don’t give a flying unicorn fart about your story.
So that’s where I come in.
We can “talk” to these ancient parts of you -- the parts where fear, stress and trauma are stored -- through movement and sensation, which form the language of your nervous system.
And that’s what I’m showing you how to do in this video.

When it comes to stress and anxiety relief, here’s what you should know:
Your brain is not separate from your body.
That seems mind-numbingly simple, doesn’t it? Of course they aren’t separate.
But unfortunately we live within a culture that divides mind from body. The separation is so pervasive that it permeates every aspect of our lives without us even being aware of it.
Take language for example. We talk about our bodies like they’re not part of “us,” -- i.e. the you that you identify with as your personality.
But actually your body is integral to who you are. Not in a judgy sort of way, like you’re a bad person if you don’t fit an unrealistic physical ideal.
But in a neurological sort of way -- your thoughts and movement develop simultaneously.
And they function simultaneously, too.
Thoughts, in fact, are the narration or summary of our physical sensations and emotions. Which means that you can change anxious thoughts by shifting your sensory experience…
i.e. by giving your brain some new information.

Chronic pain is one of the most frustrating conditions a person can encounter in their life.
The fact is, our medical system is poorly equipped to diagnose and treat chronic pain.
Why?
Well, you might think it has to do with a lack of research, or maybe that we don’t have the right tools and technology.
Or maybe doctors can’t treat chronic pain because there simply isn’t a solution -- chronic pain is just a part of everybody’s life, especially as we all get older.
But actually…
Our medical system does poorly with chronic pain not because we don’t have the right resources, but because of our world view.
You see, worldview is EVERYTHING.
How you see a problem determines how you go about fixing it.
And unfortunately, our medical system sees pain -- chronic or otherwise -- as a “body problem.”
i.e. something is broken at the body level.
Your muscles are too tight… so they prescribe muscle relaxers.
Your nerves are inflamed… so they prescribe painkillers.
Your spine is crooked… so they do surgery to fix it.
The problem is…
Most cases of pain -- lower back pain, in particular -- are “non-specific,” meaning not connected to any diagnosable disease or pathology.
According to spinal surgeon Dr. David Hanscom, doctors actually can only pinpoint the cause of pain about 15% of the time.
That means that 85% of pain cases are idiopathic -- we have no idea what’s causing them.
Of course, this is because, like I said, doctors are looking at the BODY for answers, instead of considering the NERVOUS SYSTEM.
It turns out that stress stored in your nervous system not only causes pain, but can make you more sensitive to pain signals.
Which means…
The more pain you have, the more pain you feel.
This awful loop just keeps happening -- UNLESS you do something to disrupt it.
That’s where somatic meditation comes in.
Somatic meditation -- unlike traditional forms of mindfulness meditation -- focuses on sensory awareness in your body.
This disrupts pain signals by sending what’s called “non-nociceptive data” to your brain -- information that says “it’s safe to move here.”
When done frequently, somatic meditation effectively calms your nervous system, healing stress and trauma that has resulted from accidents, injuries and emotional shock.
The result is less pain and tension in your body -- but also reduced stress and anxiety overall.

The fact is that stress and trauma are stored in your nervous system -- not just your conscious mind.

If you typically dislike meditation, find it difficult to sit still and focus or get bored easily, give somatic meditation a try.
Those restless feelings are often related to activation in your sympathetic nervous system -- your stress response, also known as “fight or flight.”
When we tap into sensory awareness through somatic meditation, your body is able to discharge the impulse to run, which in turn calms your mind and body.
The result is less pain, stress and tension overall. Trauma symptoms such as anxiety, depression, fatigue and low motivation often diminish as well.

Can pain be in your head?
If you’ve had your pain evaluated by a medical doctor who found no real cause, you might have been told that your pain is “psychosomatic” or “made up.”
And that’s pretty frustrating, because most of the clients I’ve seen who are in this predicament feel like they’re fairly sane. It’s disconcerting to hear that you might be imagining your pain!
In my experience, a psychosomatic pain diagnosis can also bring about a lot of shame and embarrassment because most people don’t really want to be in pain, and they’re wondering what’s wrong with them that they would do this to themselves.
Trust me, though -- you’re not cracking up.
And your pain?
Is completely REAL.
The reason that cases of non-specific pain -- or pain that has no apparent cause -- are treated the way that they are is because our medical culture is based on a faulty model that sees our minds and bodies as separate.
But when you comprehend how your mind and body work together to produce pain signals, then you can understand the neurological basis for psychosomatic pain -- and how to fix it (without going through years of therapy).

Morning back pain is a common complaint among my clients. Many people tell me that their back hurts when they wake up, but they don’t know why or what to do about it.
I always recommend first having your back pain checked out by a doctor to make sure there’s nothing serious going on here. But if you’ve done that and gotten the all clear from a medical practitioner, then you might want to watch this video.

Believe it or not, burnout isn’t just being tired or worn out. Burnout is actually a trauma state.
In fact, when examined under fMRI, the brains of people diagnosed with burnout show similar changes to those who have experienced childhood trauma.
Burnout causes actual, tangible, physical changes to your brain.
And that’s why burnout culture is dying.
Because we as people are seeing the fallacy of just working harder and harder.
We are seeing how it is robbing us of our health, our happiness and how “success” just continues to be elusive. No matter how hard you work, the goal posts keep moving further away.

I love coaching and all things self growth, personal development or high performance habits and psychology.
In fact life coaching and business coaching have been integral to my success as an entrepreneur, athlete, equestrian and all around human.
However, I’m seeing a lot going on in the life coaching realm that perpetuates trauma. Coaching as an industry is not overly trauma informed.
And this presents a huge problem. Because when people are growing, changing and leaving their old identities behind, it can feel like death.
I don’t mean this in a metaphorical sense. I mean that on a biological level, your brain and body think you’re going to die if you pursue a path of self evolution.
So when coaches use shame-filled statements like “you’re not being coachable” or “you’re arguing for your limitations,” it not only doesn’t help you achieve your goals -- it perpetuates the trauma loop that most people are already trapped within.

It’s true that your body holds emotions that cause physical pain. In this video, I tell you how to release trauma stored in the body so you can heal pain, stress and tension and become more of who you actually are.

For a long time, our medical system has separated out mental health from physical health. If you’re stressed and anxious, you see a therapist.
If your back hurts, you see a sports medicine doctor or a surgeon.
But what about back pain that’s caused by anxiety? And vice versa?
That’s right -- the tension in your muscles isn’t just random. Muscle tension is often caused by stress and tension or emotions stored in the body.
This makes trauma recovery therapy difficult when only thoughts are addressed and your body is left out of the picture. For complete trauma healing, it’s important to include somatic therapy practices that discharge stored stress in your nervous system that is at the root of a lot of muscle tension, pain, anxiety and depression.*

Co regulation or brain entrainment is a psychology term that describes the process of taking on some of the emotional state of another person.

Co-regulation of emotions is a biological process experienced by all mammals. As humans, we are highly social creatures. Our brains are wired for connection.
Co-regulation allows your nervous system to “read” the state of another person. This is a sort of brainwave entrainment where your body picks up on subtle cues about stress and tension.
We rely on co-regulation to alert us to danger as well as to keep us safe and connected. Co-regulation is also helpful for developing empathy. We “take on” the emotions of others, like borrowing clothes.
Co-regulation and trauma are deeply linked as well. As a baby, if your primary caregiver has unresolved trauma stuck in their body, your nervous system will pick up on it. This can put you into a permanent stress or survival state where the world appears threatening or dangerous.

We are living in uncertain times, indeed. With virtually the entire planet experiencing a global pandemic, businesses being shut down, cities and entire countries on lockdown, it's natural that worry and anxiety would set in.
But living in fear is not helpful. And you don't have to let it take over.
Somatic meditation -- at least my version of it -- uses strategies that calm your nerves at the biological level. So, rather than try to control your thoughts which can be like herding squirrels (and yes, I have experience with that -- don't ask), we create calm at the cellular level which automatically soothes your anxious, worried brain.
