In this collaboration with Merck KGaA Darmstadt Germany, I want to talk about a new type of meat that could change the game for some, but not all, of these variables: cell cultured meat. Some companies have started to create “animal-free” meat, where they take a biopsy from an animal, say, a cow, extract stem cells from that biopsy, and then grow them artificially in the lab, making potentially infinite amounts of cells. But hurdles stand in their way: production, cost, and environmental issues that might prevent this meat from making it to market. COVID-19 Genetics | Science News 2.1 Alex Dainis 2020-03-18 | Livestream link: youtu.be/Dk961zalPlQI want to answer your questions about the genetics of the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19. I'm a geneticist, and feel like this is the part of the science that I can try and help communicate. Leave your questions in the comments below, and we'll talk about them together this Friday at noon PST. Well. I wanted this week’s 2-part science news video to be about a new CRISPR study, but instead, I just think it makes the most sense to talk about the genetics of COVID-19.Let’s start with some basics. In their simplest form, viruses have two main parts: their genetic material, which could be DNA or RNA, and some kind of protein package that holds the genetic material. COVID-19 is an RNA virus. This means that the genetic material inside of it is stored as RNA, not DNA. And for COVID-19, that RNA is found within a nucleocapsid protein structure, which is inside of a lipid membrane envelope. That envelope is covered in spike proteins, which are what give the coronaviruses their name--they look a bit like a crown or corona. To replicate, it must infect a host cell and hijack that cell’s replication and protein production machinery. Those spike proteins on the outside of the virus are what attach to receptors in the cells of your lungs, ACE2 receptors. The virus then fuses its membrane with the cell’s membrane and releases its RNA into the cell. This is where it takes advantage of that cell’s machinery to make more RNA and more of its capsid and envelope proteins.But really, the virus’s RNA genome doesn’t need to contain too much information. It’s only about 30,000 bases long, and encodes for the proteins that it needs to make more virus. Once the new RNA and proteins are replicated they are assembled into new viruses, which then leave the cell to go infect more cells. Theres a Fly in my Wine! Alex Dainis 2019-02-11 | No flies were killed in the making of this video! Both flies woke up after about five minutes and flew away when later released. Typically, CO2 is used in the lab to temporarily anesthetize flies for things like sorting and observation, but at home, ice was a simpler and safer option. In fact, I used ice to temporarily slow down flies all the time during my undergraduate research, because we were interested in the flies' sensory responses, and things like CO2 and other chemical means of anesthetizing flies could mess with their sensory abilities!A fruit fly landed in my glass of wine a few weeks ago, and I remembered a study I had heard about that said even a single fly could change the flavor of a glass of wine... Advice to A Young PhD Me Alex Dainis 2019-01-04 | The last of the end-of-grad school videos. These are just some of the things I had to learn in grad school, some things I wish I could go back and talk with myself about when I was just starting out. It would have helped her a lot, I think, and I hope some of these things can help you too. I'm not claiming that I have all the answers, but maybe one or two of these things will be helpful to you. IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE: DO NOT FILM AND DRIVE. I shouldn't have to say this, but it's real dumb! For the timelapse shots I used a mount on the far side of my dashboard so that my small camera was not blocking my field of vision (I even looked up the CA laws for where I could place it!) and also I couldn't reach it so I was forced to park somewhere safely to start it, end it, or change settings. Be smart, people! Also I shouldn't have to say this either, but wear your seatbelt! I was not wearing it in parked shots but I wear it EVERY SINGLE TIME while driving and you should too! No drive is too short! Whale Watching | PhD Life Break Alex Dainis 2018-06-08 | Last month a fellow grad student and I went whale watching as a tiny, exhilarating respite from PhD work. I finally saw one of my favorite animals, a humpback whale, up close. Well worth an early Sunday wakeup. Honestly, I was barely looking at what I shot, because I really wanted to watch the whales with my eyes, not through my camera, so I'm surprised this footage turned out as well as it did!
