This landmark achievement has been conducted by the FlyWire Consortium, a large international collaboration including researchers from the University of Cambridge, the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, Princeton University, and the University of Vermont.
The researchers say the whole fly brain map is a key first step to completing larger brains. Since the fruit fly is a common tool in research, its brain map can be used to advance our understanding of how neural circuits work.
Dr Gregory Jefferis, from the University of Cambridge and the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, one of the co-leaders of the research, said: βIf we want to understand how the brain works, we need a mechanistic understanding of how all the neurons fit together and let you think. For most brains we have no idea how these networks function.
βFlies can do all kinds of complicated things like walk, fly, navigate, and the males sing to the females. Brain wiring diagrams are a first step towards understanding everything weβre interested in β how we control our movement, answer the telephone, or recognise a friend.β

Takeaways
β’ Investing in women's health is not only a medical and humanitarian imperative but also makes economic, social, political, and climate sense.
β’ AI has the potential to improve healthcare by assisting carers, providing reminders for medication, and democratizing information, but caution is needed to ensure safety and quality.
β’ Equitable access to drug treatments requires public health approaches, government action, and citizen engagement to hold corporations accountable.
β’ Improving healthcare for all requires addressing social norms, investing in grassroots organizations, and challenging economic policies that perpetuate inequality.
β’ Asking critical questions, such as why rich countries are rich and why pre-industrial variables continue to cause inequality, is essential for driving change.

We attached a 360 camera to the mowing cart this week, as the shire horses Bryn and Cosmo helped mow the King's College, Cambridge wildflower meadow.
Watching the two horses and traditional plough at work is not only a beautiful sight; there's also environmental reasons why they are used. The horses have a far lower impact on soil compaction and the flora of the meadow, compared to the use of a modern tractor.
Once the hay bales are ready, they will be distributed across the city to create more wildflower meadows. The hay will be offered to local farmers as winter feed for livestock too.
