First it is to be said that Rhithu Samhaara is not a major AD 4th-5th century Sanskrit work of Kaalidaasa like his other poetical works like Kumaara Sambhavam and Raghu Vamsam or plays like Abhijnjaana Shaakunthalam, Vikramorvvaseeyam and Maalavikaagnimithram. It is a minor work, a Khanda Kaavya, like his Megha Dootha.
Historical, botanical and geographical references in his poems denote that he was born, brought up and lived for a time in Kashmir near the Himalayas and migrated then to Southern parts under the patronage of various kings, the most famous among them being Chandragupta Vikramaaditya of Ujjain in the Kalinga Nation.

L'Allegro was John Milton’s MA Vivo Voce poem in college years, the twin sister poem of Il Penseroso. In Vivo Voce Examination he had to praise by word of mouth two contradictory situations, things. He selected Day and Night. He also decided to write (and recite) his exam papers in verse, which was not extraordinary in his times, or for him. Kahlil Gibran was a US-Arabic-Lebanese poet who has readers and followers throughout the world. He is mistaken to have written poems in free verse. In fact, he effectively hid the music inborn in his poems to prevent the dull-witted and the haughty of his times and the coming generations from enjoying them. Many have tried to unravel the music hidden in them but were struck by the mysterious halo surrounding his poems and could not rise up again. The creator of this song, P S Remesh Chandran, narrowly escaped with minor injuries, and was fortunate enough to come with a number of songs from Gibran's Tears And Laughter which was later published as a book under the title 'Kahlil Gibran's Tears And Laughter Recast In The True Poetic Form.' This is the first time they are released in the musical form.

The poem has another relevance. Though it is an old poem, if we change the name Valencien to Vietnam, it becomes current. It is also to be noted that Thomas Hardy was basically a poet but had no audience or readers as a poet. So to attract audience, and readers, he turned to writing novels which became famous. He became famous as a novelist, and as he planned, his poems gained audience and readers.

Don't play with them- they can bind us cunningly with their tongues. And don't corner them- we will never forget what hit us. Here in this poem, one sophist saint is tried in Court for crime when Judges get stung. Classical sophists were well-versed in paradoxes, understanding the meaning of which wasn’t easy. So, here the court lets him go free just because they can’t understand the clear meaning of his words.

Fresh earth at that time imparts to the runners, or walkers, the wetness of yester night’s dews in reeds and grass. Then the village folk would assemble in the hillocks for sunning themselves where at length everything under the sun would be discussed. And then the roadside shop would open, where middle aged men would debate, part and tread homeward through various ways, the next morning to restart. Village life has so many guileless virtues which once lost can never be restored.E 038 In Search Of Silver Stars P S Remesh Chandran PoemBloom Books Channel2018-12-29 | Written in 1981 May in tribute to Bobby Sands- Irish poet, politician, revolutionary and martyr- who died in a British prison on 5 May 1981 at the age of 27 while relay fasting with others for the freedom of Ireland. He died on the 65th day of fasting. Seven others also fell dead in the same prison in the same relay fasting. Mar Papa John Paul II requested his mother Rosalyn Sands to dissuade her son from fasting in prison but she did not acquiesce. Nor did Papa intervene to introduce humane conditions in British jails which were the demand of the IRA prisoners. This poem is conceived as the mother visiting her dead son. We can understand the pain in the hearts of mothers whose sons turn revolutionaries. This poem is a tribute to such mothers of the world also, the silent spectators who facilitate revolutions.E 037 Freedom And English P S Remesh Chandran PoemBloom Books Channel2018-12-22 | English kindled freedom thoughts in India and soon the British had to leave. People’s familiarity with English literature kept freedom thoughts alive for decades but now undemocratic elements want English, Freedom, Liberty and Democracy to go. States compulsorily turn people to use only regional languages. And the Centre promotes only Hindi. Administration, education and so many other vital fields are abandoning English one by one. The aim is clear: curtail thoughts of freedom, liberty, and democracy; cultivate totalitarian thoughts, and prepare for religious theocracy. Englishmen gave Indians Freedom and English. Without English they will loose Freedom.E 036 Nature And Me On The Riverside P S Remesh Chandran PoemBloom Books Channel2018-12-22 | Washing clothes in a river is easy and effortless. There are tons of litres of water flowing and within minutes our washing will be over. We spread wet clothes on rocks mid river and place large pebbles over them to prevent them from being swept away by wind. What will we do, if we see no clothes when we rise from the river after bathing, all swept away by wind and placed high on tree branches or carried downriver? Not a few have walked in loin clothes to nearby houses, told the story, caused a few suppressed laughter among women and borrowed clothes to reach homes decently. But even if we do not place weights above clothes spread on rocky surfaces for drying, they will not be swept away by wind, if we spread them wet without squeezing, unless we rearrange them after part-drying. One day when I rose from the river I found my dhoti nowhere to be seen and wondered from which house I could borrow one and what story I would tell. But on search, I happily found that though it indeed had been swept away by wind after jerking away the weighted pebbles it had not been thrown into the flow down the waterfall but deposited in a whirl-winding pit in a rock amid the stream. It was kindness of river, and wind, one many riverside bathers regularly enjoy.E 035 My Lady’s Grave Emily Bronte Poem By P S Remesh ChandranBloom Books Channel2018-12-20 | Where would you like your grave to be made- near to your home or in the wild? Would you like a place where larks and bees and linnets well hide you, and wild deer browse above your breast and wild birds raise their brood and after enjoying your smiles of love leave you to solitude? In the land of death the light of joy never fades and grief does not flow unchecked. The dark walls of death do not enclose joy for ever. The dweller in the land of death is beyond pleasure and honour and is changed and careless: even if you weep and mourn till your sorrow’s source is dry, the dead in their tranquil sleep will never return a single sigh. So, there shall be no other sound near my love’s lonely mound except the west wind blowing and the murmur of summer streams. ‘My Lady’s Grave’ is an immortal piece of poetry from one of the finest poetesses of England, Emily Jane Bronte, who lived just thirty years!E 034 Where Lies The Land Arthur Clough Poem By P S Remesh ChandranBloom Books Channel2018-12-19 | Which does a sailor love more- shore or sea- is a question long remaining unanswered. Of course shore has its charms but sea also has its many. A good sailor can never answer which he loves the most. Nothing in land can exchange for the pleasantness of pacing the smoothly polished deck and, reclining over the stern, watching the widening foaming wake passing below. The broad expanses, immeasurable distances and unfathomable depths of the ocean, with its dire challenges of wind and wave and rains, are not something scorned by sailors and wished to be got past, but something the mastering of which exults them. ‘Where Lies The Land’ is a very fine sailor’s song from the nineteenth century, written by the gifted British poet Arthur Hugh Clough.E 033 A Birth Day Christina Rossetti Poem By P S Remesh ChandranBloom Books Channel2018-12-19 | A love-laden mind is always happy. It’s always like singing birds nesting in healthy surroundings, trees bent with plenty of fruits and rainbows over peaceful seas, perhaps gladder than them all. Why? Because, her love is coming! That’s when she wishes to ascend a pulpit of silken purple dyes, carved meticulously with doves and peacocks and pomegranates, and worked in golden grapes and leaves and silver lilies. Why? Because, her love is coming for her birthday! A typical early nineteenth century song from a girl, excelling even the tender sentiments and ardent affections in Jane Austen novels, from the poet Christina Rossetti, who also wrote ‘Does The Road Wind Uphill All the Way’.E 032 Row Row Row The Boat Unknown Poet By P S Remesh ChandranBloom Books Channel2018-12-17 | ‘Row Row Row The Boat’ is a very old English song for teaching little children the art of musical singing as well as English pronunciation. Listening to the lines the child learns without the assistance of a teacher the three essentials rhyme, rhythm and lyrics. The song has had so many variations and so many tunes during the past centuries, its origin believed to be in earlier than the eighteenth century. People who are used to rowing will find this song useful and handy to teach their children. The broad expanse of water will sure have a prompting effect on human minds to sing and this is the ideal song. Inside class rooms and homes also singing this song would be an exhilarating experience, especially if as a chorus. ‘Row Row Row The Boat’ and ‘Ten Green Bottles Hanging On The Wall’ were my cradle songs and I learned their lyrics and tune well in childhood. I was taught by my father Late. N. Sahadevan, B.A., B.T., C.T.E., who worked as a High School English Teacher in my home village. He was my Class Teacher and English Teacher also in the Tenth Standard in S. K. V. High School, Nanniyode. My mother, late Padmakshy Sahadevan, also taught me the same songs in the same tune, who was incidentally one of his students. Before joining my local High School, he had served a few years in Singapore, Malaysia and other countries for a British cultural firm and then returned and got himself trained by the British Council of India at the Regional Institute of English, Bangalore. Therefore it is not certain where he got this tune from. I am re-creating this tune from memory.E 031 Ten Green Bottles Unknown Poet By P S Remesh ChandranBloom Books Channel2018-12-17 | ‘Ten Green Bottles Hanging On The Wall’ is a very old English song for teaching little children the art of counting as well as English pronunciation and music. Listening to the lines the child learns the three without the assistance of a teacher. The song has had so many variations and so many tunes during the past centuries, its origin believed to be around the fourteenth century. People who are reluctant to use the word ‘hanging’ which hints death repeatedly in the song lest unnecessary ideas and notions shall enter the minds of little children frequently have substituted that word with other words like ‘sitting, standing, and the like. But how could a bottle standing or sitting on a wall instead of hanging by a thread on the wall accidentally fall, which argument is not plausible. ‘Ten Green Bottles Hanging On The Wall’ and ‘Row Row Row The Boat’ were my cradle songs and I learned their lyrics and tune well in childhood. There is no use singing anymore. The real stimulant in life- the heroine’s captive smile- has also vanished. There only darkness, despair and anguish remain. He was only gaining enemies through his songs anyway, so no more singing. If a southerly wind came and blew out the light of life now, it would have been a blessing. You must have now gained an insight into how the mind of Kerala’s immortal poet Changampuzha Krishna Pillai worked. ‘Aruthinippaaduvaan’ was one of his fine songs, diving deep into the black depair that sometimes comes upon human minds. ‘Aruthinippaaduvan’ in Malayalam means ‘No More Singing’.MR 049 Orudivasam Pularoliyil ഒരുദിവസം പുലരൊളിയിലു് Changampuzha Poem By P S Remesh ChandranBloom Books Channel2018-12-15 | How will be the passing away of a beloved? Some sang solo and some had everyone in the family sitting around the lamp on the floor and singing chorus. While passing before these houses, we were overwhelmed with joy and kindness, hearing these fine prayers flowing out and spreading through the night. Many people can still remember which homes had evening prayer and which had not. Many songs, written by unknown poets, survived generations this way. Now those times are past. Only a few homes still sing before a lighted lamp in the evening. Most houses have pre-recorded music like their notorious temples have- a charade of showing piety and also being a nuisance to others! This song- the lyrics and music- was stolen from the lips of a regular evening singer, Smt. Kamalakshy Divakaran, wife of Late Subedar N. Divakaran, Military Engineers, my father’s elder brother, from whom I learned many rare songs like this, including the full twenty lines of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. I am presenting this song here which though won’t be as beautiful as she sings it who is a fine singer anyway.MR 046 Chanthameriya Poovilum ചന്തമേറിയ പൂവിലും Kumaranasan Poem By P S Remesh ChandranBloom Books Channel2018-12-14 | Thousands of flowers fade and fall each second but no one takes note or laments over their passing away. The difference between dream and reality, imagination and bare facts, what the mind sees and the camera sees, is brought out well in this poem, in resonantly beautiful words and phrases. Coming from the most renowned writer of countless lovely film songs in Malayalam, equally renowned for his poetic collections also, it was no wonder this song became a favourite in recitation stages through generations and one of the test marks for poetic proficiency in Malayalam literature against which many of the later poets compared their poetic creations.MR. 044 Kaakka കാക്ക Vailoppilli Sreedhara Menon Poem By P S Remesh ChandranBloom Books Channel2018-12-14 | This poem opened the eyes of Malayali to the till then unthought of and unrecognized beauties of the most common courtyard bird of Kerala, the Crow. The regular habitat of the poet was destroyed by a government establishment for fattening the purses of a few rotten engineers, politicians and civil contractors. Once there was a clean river, a beautiful waterfall, mountains, forests and people there. The river was dammed up unnecessarily in the name of building a mini hydro-electric project which produced no electricity, the forests were clear-felled for making room for that dam, and the people were evacuated because no one knew when that dam would burst. Those scenes of innocence, simplicity and pagan beauty were lost, but imprinted in the mind of the poet. Vanaseemayile Pulkkudil means The Little Hut On The Edge Of The Forest.
Those women and little children- those forest-dwellers who asse- mbled in front of their huts and sang lovely songs of joy in the evenings when the poet walked through the edge of the forest after bathing in the river- they all are gone now. Those huts from which kitchen smoke rose to serene evening skies amid lush green lie ruined now in the middle of a burnt and desolate forest land. That dam which ate up 50 crores rupees and produced 0.0005 MW of electricity is at Meenmutty, Vamanapuram River at Nanniyode, a warning to wanton arrogance of Kerala’s Electricity Board. When this poem was penned down in 1979, there was no fear of a dam. It is dedicated as tribute to that vanished beauty spot, in fond remembrance of lost rivers, forests and people.
Written in 1979, this poem was considered as private and so, was not published. But the people and their habitat which inspired this poem succumbed to the greed and corruption of a few government people, builders and politicians in later years, which happens everywhere in Kerala and which no people’s representatives or chief ministers have had a back bone to resist, or protest. Lost rivers, forests and peoples also have voices, and hence, this poem is published now, in print and as video, as a gesture of vanished communities’ protest against eating up nature’s preserves and reserves by government officers, greedy and corrupt to the core.

The French invented the word Dètente to denote easing of international tension and confrontation. This poem is in praise of Détente- a disappearing bird. This is the first, and perhaps the only, poem in Malayalam with such elaborate and broad an international theme as background. Some words used in this poem which were familiar to everyone, everywhere in the 1970s may not be familiar to generations born since the 1990s. They are explained in foot notes to this poem. This poem belongs to the early 1980s, and gauging from his international articles published lately, it seems the writer’s view of US and a few other countries have changed much since.
