The Lion King | DISNEY THIS DAY | October 19, 1999 Daps Magic 2024-10-19 | On this day in 1999, ‘The Lion King’ stage show opened on the West End at the Lyceum Theatre in London. The composers, Elton John and Tim Rice, as well as Roy E. Disney and Michael Eisner were in attendance that night. Amazingly, the West End production is still running today after 25 years and over 9,500 performances! ‘The Lion King’ became the top-earning stage show in box-office history in 2014. It has grossed more than $8 billion globally! [25 years ago in 2024]
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil | DISNEY THIS DAY | October 18, 2019 Daps Magic 2024-10-18 | On this day in 2019, ‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’ was released in theaters. It was the second in the ‘Maleficent’ series, a live-action reimagination of Disney’s animated classic ‘Sleeping Beauty.’ Angelina Jolie returns in the title role along with Elle Fanning as her goddaughter Aurora. The sequel takes place five years after the original film where the coming wedding of Aurora and Prince Phillip brings out dark forces that threaten to divide the kingdom. [5 years ago in 2024]
Halloweentown | DISNEY THIS DAY | October 17, 1998 Daps Magic 2024-10-17 | On this day in 1998, the Disney Channel Original Movie ‘Halloweentown’ debuted. Thirteen-year-old Marnie learns that she comes from a line of secret witches and that she is a witch too. She must help her grandmother save the magical Halloweentown from evil curses and warlocks. The film was largely set in real-life St. Helens, Oregon. The town welcomes tourists to its October-long Spirit of Halloweentown event where they recreate some of the sets!

Journey of Water | DISNEY THIS DAY | October 16, 2023 Daps Magic 2024-10-16 | On this day in 2023, the walkthrough attraction Journey of Water, Inspired by ‘Moana’ opened officially at EPCOT. Visitors travel along a garden path that illustrates the water cycle and its impact on the Earth. Interactive fountains and water features depict the cycle of rain, streams, wetlands, land, lakes, rivers, the ocean, and finally back to the sky. Creative nods to ‘Moana’ are included throughout the attraction, including a lush 16-foot topiary of Te Fiti. [1 year ago in 2024]
Moana Planes | DISNEY THIS DAY | October 15, 2016 Daps Magic 2024-10-15 | On this day in 2016, the first of three Hawaiian Airlines planes themed to ‘Moana’ was unveiled. Actors Dwayne Johnson and Auli’i Cravalho were in attendance in Honolulu for the debut. Three designs promoted the then-upcoming release of the ‘Moana’ film. The custom decals adorned the Airbus A330s with Maui, Heihei, Pua, and Moana herself. Even the overhead luggage bins were decorated! The special livery was in place until March 2017.

In the show, a fairy godmother helps two boys work through some challenges using classic Disney songs. “Steps in Time” only ran for six months because it wasn’t a hit with guests. Walt Disney thought the attraction needed more humor and enhancements, which Imagineer Marc Davis delivered. The area transformed into Mine Train Through Nature’s Wonderland, opening in 1960. The pack mules returned for this new version, but sadly the Conestoga Wagons and Rainbow Mountain Stagecoach Ride did not continue after 1959. Dreamed up and directed by Tim Burton, the film was fleshed out from his 1984 short of the same name. ‘Frankenweenie’ was both a satire of and a tribute to the ‘Frankenstein’ story. When young Victor's dog Sparky is killed, Victor resurrects him in an electrical storm.
