Designing a cyberpunk ice cream truck that glows! Seriously Nerdy 2024-09-03 | Hey there! We're Alex and Dani, and we're seriously nerdy about cyberpunk. Classics like “Blade Runner” and “TRON” have seared themselves into our minds with their high-tech worlds and iconic design styles. For this build, we’re going to convert a 1984 Japanese walk-through van into an English ice cream truck outfitted for a cyberpunk world. You’ll meet Pierre, proprietor of the Repair Shop who sells frozen novelties to some of London’s most notorious lowlifes. One thing they can all agree on is waiting in line for premium sweets in a futuristic world where sugar and dairy are rationed and refrigerant energy use is restricted. Using 2-point lighting to mimic the glow of cyberpunk neon streets was a new technique for us – we still have a lot to learn, but it was a fun experiment to start with! We set our mini Wizard of Oz diorama in Kansas Seriously Nerdy 2024-07-31 | “Hello there! Anyone home? We just dropped by!” We're Alex and Dani, and we're seriously nerdy about the 1939 classic “Wizard of Oz,” which is celebrating its 85th anniversary on Aug. 25! When Dani was a kid, she was obsessed with this film and watched it way too many times. That explains the deepest of deep cuts in this build, y’all. For this build, we challenged ourselves to try to kit-bash the Gale Farm using bits and pieces we already had in our supplies. (And for the most part – we did! Except for a couple of 1:35 gardening tools that seduced us on a trip to Burbank’s House of Hobbies.) We also thought it would be fun to recreate the sepia shading seen for the Kansas portions of the film – a fun artsy exercise to capture the limited colors in shades of brown. Not pictured in the video is a pass we did with invisible ink to put a rainbow over the house that appears under blacklight! Unfortunately it’s one of those special effects that doesn’t photograph well, but trust us – it’s pretty neat in person. Have any questions about this build? Nina West Drag is Magic jewelry box glow-up Seriously Nerdy 2024-07-14 | Hey there! We're Alex and Dani, and we're seriously nerdy about celebrating the creativity and contributions of our LGBTQIA+ community all year round! But since June gets all the glittery rainbow focus, we spent last month glowing up a sad little box that had been sitting on our craft supply shelf for years. Overlooked and neglected, this pitiful MDF jewelry box was an early production prototype we snagged at a sample sale. As huge Nina West fans – and in unapologetic celebration of our favorite queen currently appearing on RuPaul’s Drag Race All-Stars – we decided to glow her up into a one-of-a-kind Nina West jewelry box.If you haven’t seen Nina’s video, “Drag Is Magic,” check it out and then come back. We took inspiration from Nina’s fantasy character in “Drag is Magic” and used Hero Forge to create a base figure that we could sculpt on top of to match Nina’s look from head to toe. We lifted the cheery pink, blue, purple and yellow color scheme and turned the exterior of the box into modern art. We took inspiration from Nina’s recent trip to Palm Springs and used the laser cutter to create custom panels of those iconic midcentury breeze blocks to adorn the outside. We’re calling this style “midcentury maximalist” – the funky curves, high-contrast colors and whimsical design details of the 1950s and 1960s, but turned up to 11! (Spoiler alert: it might be Dani’s favorite style to design for.) Finally, we worked with the Only One Music Box Company to create a custom music box wheel that literally plays “Drag is Magic.” We didn’t know that was a thing we could even do, but the internet is a wild place!We hope you enjoyed this fanciful departure from our regular pop culture miniatures, and we appreciate you watching. We put a miniature neon sign in a Fallout diorama! Seriously Nerdy 2024-06-28 | Greetings from Vault SN! We're Alex and Dani, and we're seriously nerdy about the recent Amazon MGM Studios series, Fallout. Sure, it’s based on an elaborate video game franchise that Dani never played because she has terrible hand-eye coordination, but I think we can all agree that the soundtrack to that game absolutely slaps. I don’t want to set the world on fire, nor do I wanna leave the congo. (Oh no no no no no.) We loved how the series interpreted the post-apoc world, featured a plucky heroine and squeezed in all the midcentury details. If Dani had better gamer skillz and thicker skin when it comes to video game attacks, you know she would be playing that game, too! But for now, we’re very much enjoying the streaming series. For this build, we wanted to take our experimentation with flexible light-up filaments a step further and use them as strands of neon in an old, weathered sign. We took our inspiration from the Red Rocket fueling stations seen in the Fallout universe, reimagining the architecture we’ve seen into an all-new standalone sign that fits under a glass dome. We did some research on classic neon signs (thanks to our friend Steve at instagram.com/colorbyspiegel!) and designed our own vertical version of the Red Rocket sign complete with those iconic space-age angles. We used our Glowforge Spark to cut many of the sign components to exact size and specification, then got to work making tiny props like a coolant cost sign, broken Nuka-Cola bottles and cinderblocks to give the base some interesting in-universe details. We turned trash into a Star Wars Podracer Diorama! Seriously Nerdy 2024-06-02 | Hello, boyos! We're Alex and Dani, and we're seriously nerdy about celebrating the 25th anniversary of “Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.” We were just younglings when this film debuted. Divisive as this chapter in galactic canon may be, we will always have a soft spot in our hearts for the start of the prequels. We are big fans Boylei Hobby Time, so when he threw out the challenge for his Patrons to contribute their own versions of Podracers, we couldn’t help but get to crafting! For this build, we used a lot of the scraps we had on hand to create an original vehicle that would be right at home in the Boonta Classic on Tatooine. Our racer is a feisty Mirilian, Pithra, known for her quick reflexes and no-nonsense attitude. She travels with her droid and flagger R4-E1 and her pet Vulptex, Bennjel. Together with their beat-up podracer, the trio makes their way across the galaxy competing in races. For this video, we use some techniques that are familiar to us, like painting tabletop miniatures and kitbashing existing pieces, along with some new things, like trying out flexible light-up filaments and suspending floating structures with wire. It was a blast playing in the Star Wars universe and learning new things along the way! Crafting our Legendary Hidden Temple Diorama | Part 2: Green Monkeys Seriously Nerdy 2024-05-19 | Crafting a scene from Legends of the Hidden Temple | Part 1: Orange IguanasHello there! We're Alex and Dani, and we're seriously nerdy about the 90s Nickelodeon adventure game show “Legends of the Hidden Temple.” Earlier this year, we decided to start a 7-part series building all the rooms from the temple in our own style, rooted in our nostalgia for the show and inspired by the mythology of ancient Mayan and Olmec cultures. In this video, we’re going to build on the lessons we learned in the first part of the build to continue the temple into the Pit of the Pendulum. Although this is a fantasy setting, we used real-world references from the ruins at Xlapak’s Palace I in Yucatan, Mexico. Our own Green Monkey-folk were inspired by the Common Squirrel Monkey found in South America and modeled on the tabletop miniature builder Hero Forge. Using old model kits for a Midcentury Mars diorama Seriously Nerdy 2024-03-31 | Greetings! We're Alex and Dani, and we're seriously nerdy about model kits. But we have a hard time leaving them intact, what with all the war and such. In this video, watch us take some 1:48 scale kits used for World War II models and transform them into a scene from an imaginary Martian colony founded in the 1950s. We turned a Japanese 4x4 vehicle into a magnetic-hover Postal Vehicle and RAF pilots into a gentleman and his pup greeting the Martian mail carrier. We challenged ourselves to use bits and pieces we had on-hand to craft a midcentury bunker exterior that’s carved right into the side of those orange cliffs. And because we’re seriously nerdy about research, did you know that even in the 1940s, astronomers believed that Mars had vegetation? The science fiction from that era is wild! That’s why, for this build, the inhabitants need only a little extra oxygen and dwellings built into the terrain for climate control, and can otherwise live comfortably on the Red Planet. Crafting a scene from Legends of the Hidden Temple | Part 1: Orange Iguanas Seriously Nerdy 2024-02-29 | Hello, everyone! We're Alex and Dani, and we're seriously nerdy about the 90s Nickelodeon adventure game show “Legends of the Hidden Temple.” We spent many a’ day in our youth dreaming of assembling the Silver Monkey statue flawlessly. We’ve been looking for a multi-series project that would allow us to scratch-build structures one at a time, and seven segments of a fantasy Mayan temple seemed to fit that goal perfectly. In this Part 1 video, we’re going to use every dang craft material we own to create the Crypt and the Ledges that are inspired by the series. Although this is a fantasy setting, we want to pay tribute to the ancient Mayan inspiration with real-world references from Temple of the Seven Dolls at Dzibilchaltún and the cave pottery at Balamkú in Mexico. We relied on some things we know (like painting mini figures and distressing miniature wood planks) and discovered some things we didn’t know (like how thin bass and balsa woods really are incredibly difficult under clay). It wouldn’t be a temple run without some challenges along the way! We made an Over the Garden Wall diorama lantern! Seriously Nerdy 2024-02-05 | Who goes there, nerds!? We're Alex and Dani, and we're seriously nerdy about the Cartoon Network special “Over the Garden Wall.” It’s a modern fairytale that we’ve been jonesing to make into a craft, and we finally decided to put Episode 1: “The Old Grist Mill” into a lantern diorama. In this video, we’re going to take an IKEA lantern and turn it into a shadowy forest, complete with tiny Wirt, Greg and Woodsman figures from the tabletop miniature customizer site Hero Forge. See Our New Twist on a Christmas Village House! Seriously Nerdy 2024-01-01 | Happy New Year, nerds! We're Alex and Dani, and we're seriously nerdy about our porcelain house glow ups. Don’t believe us? This is our fourth one so far! In this video, we’re going to take the Simpson & Sons Opticians house from Lemax and glow it up with an original storyline that fits within our Seriously Nerdy North Pole. It’s a world filled with champagne and candy canes and anthropomorphic gingerbread folk. Totally normal holiday stuff here! Meet Bing and his younger brother, Bowie. These elf brothers inherited Simpson & Sons Opticians when Ma and Pa Simpson retired, so they decided to remodel the building in a style that fits each of them: Bing’s more of a traditional cocoa fellow while Bowie is all fantastical gumdrops! One of the things we love about using these Lemax houses is figuring how to put our own spin on the house elements while honoring the general theme and story. For this build, we modified a few exterior elements before priming it and giving it a new exterior paint and glittering snow effects. Then we used tabletop figures inside each of the building’s wrap windows to bring Bing and Bowie to life. We hope you have a safe and happy start to 2024. We Used Felt to Customize Bluey Holiday Ornaments! Seriously Nerdy 2023-12-25 | Merry Christmas, nerds! We're Alex and Dani, and we're seriously nerdy about the animated series “Bluey” from Ludo Studio in Australia! We were introduced to the show earlier this year and have been hooked ever since. In this video, we're going to glow up some store-bought Bluey and Bingo ornaments and sculpt a matching Muffin ornament in clay, inspired by the final episode of Season 1: “Veranda Santa.” We made our own thin sheets of wool felt to give each puppy a fuzzy texture, and coated their eyes and noses with UV resin to give them a bit of gloss. This is an easy way to customize your own ornaments with a little felt, glue and patience! This will be a lo-fi speed build, so if you hate narration, you'll love this! Celebrating Our Trip to Japan with a Teeny Diorama Seriously Nerdy 2023-11-22 | Hiya, nerds! We're Alex and Dani, and we're seriously nerdy about Japanese culture! We had the opportunity to visit Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto for our honeymoon in January 2023 and fell in love with the sites and sounds of Japan. While there, we picked up some model kits that we assembled into this fantasy diorama to commemorate the trip. Sure, this version of Nara Park is entirely populated with deer and gachapon units, but it’s also full of elements that remind us of our favorite places we visited during our time there. It was also fun for us to explore this tiny “N scale,” where two millimeters represent a foot! We're unofficially calling this a deer-orama. Redesigning a Star Wars Toy with Hilarious Results Seriously Nerdy 2023-10-24 | Hello there! Maybe you've seen the new Babu Frick interactive toys available at Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. Well we saw them. And we immediately thought about glowing the figure up into an all-new character! As part of an adventure onboard the (now tragically retired) Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, we turned a standard Babu Frick into an original character, Besho Frum. We took him completely apart and customized his skin texture, facial features, and even his clothing. Then we used Arduino to create a remote of custom phrases so we could cue Besho to interact with passengers and crew onboard The Halcyon! If you don't know what any of that means, that's okay! This was new territory for us, too, and we learned a lot of things along the way. The final result was a pint-sized companion who kept us laughing in a galaxy far, far away.--Interested in learning more about Besho's backstory?He's a droidsmith from Kijimi, the snowy planet where we first meet Babu Frick in "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker." He's a First Order loyalist and a bit of a lush, so we had him programmed with phrases that included "For the Order!" and "We are here to drink." Besho and our friend, Anders, have a bit of an ongoing argument over a prosthetic L-hand installation that didn't go as planned. Anders and Besho were able to argue throughout the trip about Anders' malfunctioning hand, with several random dialogue options programmed exclusively for fights with Anders! We Filled a Mini Globe with an Animal Pirate Crew! Seriously Nerdy 2023-06-04 | Ahoy, nerds! We Made Star Wars Toys into a Mandalorian Lamp! Seriously Nerdy 2023-04-02 | No April Foolin' here, nerds! If you, too, are fans of the Disney+ series “The Mandalorian,” than have we got a build for you! Last year, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge began selling limited numbers of the iconic camtono safes. We knew we wanted one, but we didn’t know what we’d actually do with it – we’re a little short on beskar these days. That’s when a lightbulb went off: we could use its sturdy barrel shape and make it into a lamp, using the cavity inside for a little Mando-inspired diorama. It took us a few months of tinkering, but the end result is inspired by the Navarro forge scene from “Chapter 3: The Sin” and features a fully-functioning lamp component.
